Hadley is planning to run away from her awful husband, Frank. She has a plan to sneak into his work overnight, take his money, and run with her daughter and nephew in tow. However, once there she runs into Grace, who works with Frank. Grace is also planning on running away with her baby and also needs money.. They team up and end up on the run together and when the police get involved they discover that sometimes you're better off together.
I really enjoyed this story that reminded me very much of Thelma and Louise. Yes, at times you need to suspend disbelief and some decisions are questionable at best, but the friendship between the two women, initially created by necessity but gradually blooming into a much deeper friendship, really makes the novel. It was certainly very different from her novel In An Instant (which I also loved) but still a great read.
This book just goes on and on. It is not believable. I tried to finish it but it was so tedious. Hadley is escaping a bad marriage and Grace has a baby and is clueless as a mother. Taking a hostage was kind of my end all and then to start a romance with him.......
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC of Hadley and Grace by Suzanne Redfearn.
Hadley has been hiding a secret from her husband Frank for a while. Frank thinks that Hadley will be leaving for a short time to deal with a family issue, but Hadley plans to leave much longer than that.
Taking a quick detour to Franks office for some travel funds, she finds Frank's assistant Grace, who is also fleeing, and who is also looking for money. One of the women has a gun, and the face off isn't pretty. But when the cops get involved, it becomes clear quickly that the two are much stronger together than apart, especially when it comes to taking care of each other's children and injuries.
This is a really fun "Thelma and Louise" story. It doesn't go in the direction that I expected to at all, and that was the fun of it. I loved the female friendship that was built from necessity, but then turned into a strong sisterhood. I was surprised at the relationships that were formed throughout the story and the turns that they took. There were a few instances when it got a bit slow and I had to work to get re-invested. Overall it's a fresh and winding tale of two women, doing what they have to do to survive.
HADLEY AND GRACE is “Thelma and Louise” 2.0...with kids and less violence.
Hadley needs to get away from her terrible husband, Frank. With her teenaged daughter and her younger nephew, she has a plan in place to sneak into his work overnight, take his money, and run. What she doesn’t expect is to run into Grace, who works with Frank, also in the office in an attempt to get his money and make her own escape. Grace is escaping her past with her infant son. One thing leads to another, and Hadley and Grace (and the 3 children) end up on the run together when the sh!t hits the fan.
This was an extremely entertaining read. Through moments of humor, suspense, and some sadness, it was lovely to see the friendship grow between the two women from different backgrounds who bond over the insane circumstances they’ve been put in. As the situation gets increasingly out of control, it’s hard not to root for both of them and their children...hoping they find a way out of the mess they’ve created. I felt I needed to suspend a bit of disbelief with the wrap up, but it’s a fun (and slightly emotional) journey getting there!
There is one small part that discusses a character’s racism (not the main characters...PHEW!) that I think should’ve either been dropped or expanded on. I’m not sure what the point was when it was only one or two sentences and didn’t seem to serve any purpose to the plot.
Thank you to Lake Union Publishing, author Suzanne Redfearn, and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This starts out as a fun book about Hadley and Grace, both women trying to escape their lives. It quickly turns into a Thelma and Louise kind of story. It is different. It is a (mis)adventure. And, they are also accompanied by a baby, a moody teenager and a special needs young boy.
Told in alternating voices of Hadley and Grace with the occasional
different voice thrown in to keep the reader aware of what else is happening. Hadley and Grace are as different as night and day. They squabble with each other constantly but at the same time they are grudgingly developing respect for each other.
A lot of humour in the story but also very serious undertones.
Very enjoyable read. Some might find the ending a little “fairytale-ish” but I loved it. No loose ends, everything nicely explained.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC in exchange for a review.
Entertaining quick read about a two women on the run from relationship troubles. While some of the plot was far fetched, the heart and emotion of the characters was a highlight.
A terrific read sat down to read a few pages& could not put down.Great characters so well written so involving..A 2020 Thelma& Grace highly recommend.#netgalley#lakeunionpublishing.
A fun read. Families come in all shapes and sizes. You can't help feeling loyal to this nontraditional family.
Hadley and Grace, who could not be more different from each other, are both running from the abusive men in their lives. Their paths become entertwined, and they become involved in a bigger mess than either of them anticipated.
This is the first ARC (out of maybe 12-15 so far) that I'm not going to finish. I only made it through 50% of this book, so maybe the second half is great. I wasn't very interested in the main characters, but the author gave them interesting back stories and juxtaposed them nicely against one another. I feel like the plot limped along until Hadley just randomly has sex with a stranger they had kidnapped, threatened with a gun, injured, and molested, which felt out of place and odd. I stopped reading at that point. I am sad though that I won't get to find out what happened to Hadley's kids, who were one of the best parts of the story. I think this book does have potential and may pay off for those that stick through.
Note: I recieved a free ebook copy of Hadley and Grace from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book has some tense, funny, endearing moments, but gave up 3/4 of the way in for I found it too repetitive. Too far fetched.
I love this book! It is such a fun read. It is reminiscent of Thelma and Louise plus kids. The characters are all likable and I rooted for them the whole time. As I was reading I just couldn't figure a way out for them but the author tied it all up beautifully. I can't wait to read more by this author. This is bad me mesmerized from the get go.
Thank you Net Galley for allowing me to read this ARC for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. It is the first book I have read by this author and I look forward to reading more of her work. The story follows the 2 main characters, Hadley & Grace with their children as they look for their freedom. These characters are from opposite ends of the spectrum, who grow to like each other as they look for a better life. I found the book easy to read and I was unable to put it down. Their adventures were in the tradition of Thelma & Louise, with the added input of the children who also had their own characters. It was great to see how they each evolved and how they changed their perceptions, reacted to each other and those they met along the road.. The ending for me was unexpected, but not unwelcome.
A great read.
What a terrific story!
You will definitely get caught up on this bumpy trip, so fasten your seat-belts and HOLD ON!I
There is no doubt that there are no chance meetings in life and nothing is ever a coincidence!
Grace and Hadley meet one night in Hadley's husband's place of business. Hadley knows what she is looking for, but can she find it? It so happens that Grace is an employee here, and she knows a whole lot about this building including its secret hiding places! Let their friendship begin!
This accidental meeting leads to an amazing, fast paced journey that becomes the beginning of an alliance.
But... this is not easy when you are both wanted by the FBI and running with three children in tow.
There is suspense, heartache, heartbreak, love, and a car ride you will not want to miss! I
loved every minute while wondering "what is next" with these characters!
This book is a great Thelma and Louise type story.
Hadley is married to Frank, a controlling jerk. Grace works for Frank, and he denies her pay for a business deal she made. Both women have their own personal motives for stealing money from Frank, but when they both show up at the office, they have to change their plans. They have to work together to avoid being caught. Hadley’s kids, Mattie and Skipper, and Grace’s son, Miles, add an interesting dynamic to their escape and hiding.
This was a great book. I was hooked after the first few chapters. I really fell in love with both Grace and Hadley as well as their kids. I was rooting for them with every close call. The book is a must-read!
This is the second Suzanne Redfearn book I have read, and I am struggling to figure out how to properly review this book. Did I enjoy it... YES! I have read about where people are comparing to Thelma abd Louise.. and never have seen this movie, I do understand the reasoning.
I did feel the book was well written and the characters are well written. However... I did not really buy into the plot line. I just found myself saying "that can't really happen'... and various other sentiments. I suppose that is what a book is for... to take us away from every day troubles,
Five (trillion) stars and loved it to the moon and back. Not your mothers Thelma and Louise but a better, deeper, funnier, feminist tale of two women on the run cross-country. With three children in tow to boot. Couldn’t stop reading even if I wanted to and stayed up late to see how my two new favorite women avoided the infamous cliff, knowing that today we would have a different ending. A story of family of choice, love and trust, redemption and change when choices are made and consequences follow. It’s funny, edgy, scary and totally absorbing and you are rooting for them and experiencing the journey, both physically and metaphorically. Praying that Reese Witherspoon is casting the screenplay right now. . Food for my soul in quarantine feeling the breeze in my hair as I kept them company on the run. So very good, One of my favorites so far in 2020.
4.5 stars. This book was so FUN! Really, it's a fun and very quick read (because you just have to keep reading to see what will happen next!). It's the story of Hadley and Grace, two women who become accidental criminals on the run from the FBI with their kids in tow. Yes, it's a nod to Thelma and Louise (per the author) but it's SO much more. This is a story of self-discovery and the meaning of family. Hadley and Grace discover that they are stronger together than apart. The ending is perfect and beautiful.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Not exactly your Thelma and Louise copycat novel. Actually, not at all.
Grace is married to Frank. Hadley works for Frank. Frank is the worst kind of husband and boss. One fateful night Grace puts into motion her plans to leave Frank, the very same night that Hadley prepares to take off with her toddler. Both Hadley and Grace are certain that Frank has lots of money hidden at his office, whatever "lots" means, and so they go to the office, separately, to find the loot, and bump in to each other. Hadley knows where the safe is, and what the combination is. She will share this with Grace for a 50% split of the money.
So begins the forging of the tenuous relationship which eventually involves stolen cars, stolen ID, dyed hair, car chases crossing several state lines, and the FBI.
It's a wild ride. Come along with them. You won't regret it.

Thelma and Louise is one of the greatest movies ever, this book takes a hint from that story.
Grace is raising a baby boy while her husband is in Afghanistan working and gambling away the little money they have. Hadley is married to an abusive man, Frank, she is raising her sister’s child Skipper and her own teenage daughter. When Hadley is supposed to drop off Skipper at her sister so she can start caring for him she sees it as the greatest way to get out. Grace works for Frank, aside from being the worst husband he is an awful employer, when Hadley and Grace find each other sneaking around the office late at night faith makes it so they have to stick together. A wild ride with two momma bears on the run (liked that description in the book!) ensues. Grace is really street smart and Hadley is an amazing liar, together they get away with many things and are even able to elude the FBI.
I really liked the characters, two strong women, each in their own right, trying to do what is best for the ones they love. The characters are well written and the kids in the story really add to their depth. I didn’t like that there were chapters from Mark/FBI POV. Although I liked the book, the story, the characters, there is just something that doesn’t work for me. It might be the writing style, I can’t put my finger on it, but it’s there.
A modern day Thelma and Louise story. I loved the storyline and the characters. This was a fun, great read!
