I was in the middle of two other cozy mysteries when was able to receive a copy of A Death Long Overdue. I couldn't get "into" the other two books, but I had trouble putting this one down! It is the best of the Lighthouse Library mysteries. Lucy finds herself involved in solving another murder, this time of the former lighthouse director. We get caught up with all of Lucy's friends and coworkers as they seek to solve the newest murder. If you enjoy this series, you will love the newest one.
I received a complimentary copy of A Death of Long Overdue thanks to NetGalley, but all opinions are my own.
Thank you to the publisher for an early copy of this book!
I particularly liked this book because a)it's based in NC; b)who doesn't love a library based out of a lighthouse?
Lucy Richardson is a local librarian, based out of a NC lighthouse. Together with her friends, they host a college reunion and by the end of the evening, one of the attendees is dead. Who did it? Why?
This book has a nice blend of cozy mystery, romance and summer read!
Bertie’s Librarian classmates are in town for a reunion at the Lighthouse Library. The she finds out that the former director, Helena Sanchez, also happens to be in town, Bertie invites her to join them for a reception at the Lighthouse Library. Helena turns out to be a rude woman that those who knew are aren’t really happy about her joining them. At the end of the evening, the group decides to walk the boardwalk to take in the view and hear ghost stories from Louise Jane, who considers herself an authority on local history and the spiritual world.
At the end of their walk, the women find the body of Helena Sanchez floating in the marsh and it appears to be murder. Lucy can’t help but connect the dots between the past and the present and finds it connecting to a $25 million piece of jewelry that disappeared 25 years ago. But the police need proof to make an arrest for murder and Lucy only has her gut feelings to go on until she can find the proof that will help the police make an arrest and build a solid case while not becoming another victim herself.
This is a great series in a fabulous setting. You can almost smell the salty air and hear the surf as you read. Leveraging published works in the story that always tend to tie in to the story is another added plus for bibliophiles. This is one series I never miss reading when a new book is published.
This is probably classified as 'cozy mystery,' which is not my usual genre, so the book started off slow. I kept reading, though, and pretty soon I was really engrossed in the story. This is book 7 of a series, so I obviously missed a lot of backstory, but it didn't seem to matter. Now I am interested in reading the older books in the series. I think if you like 'cozy mysteries' this would be a good series. Thank for you! you #netgalley for allowing me to read this ARC
This is a wonderful cozy mystery series and I’ve enjoyed all the books, this one included. I think Lucy is a great character and as always, I thought the mystery was well written and engaging and the friendships and relationships between characters continues to be great.
Full review to come closer to publication date.
This was a fun, light, quick and enjoyable read for me. It had a cozy feel with a small town touch. This was my first read of this series and I enjoyed getting to know the characters. I was excited to find out there were more books in the series. It had a little of everything; murder, friendship, mystery and love. What’s better than a murder mystery story sprinkled with some love, about a librarian, who lives in a lighthouse, and has a cat. This story had a good plot, with some twists that left me guessing who the murderer was. I will definitely be grabbing some other books in this series to read.
Thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the ARC of this book and allowing me the opportunity to read and review it!
This a fun and enjoyable series.
Lucy works and lives in the library lighthouse but always finds time to get involved with the latest murder. The books are fast paced and the characters are likeable. it is part of a series but works well as a stand alone novel.
This is a fun, fast paced series that always leaves me wishing I could live in a library lighthouse.
Lucy is a fun character who is always willing to stick her nose in where it doesn’t belong, and she doesn’t mind stepping on anyone’s toes.
When a fun reunion turns deadly, Lucy prepares to get to the bottom of things.
Of course, no investigation is complete without the assistance of Louise Jane, which tends to annoy Lucy.
It’s always fun to catch up with Lucy and all her friends.
A Death Long Overdue is a nicely written cosy mystery. I haven't read the other ones of the series yet, this is my first. It has a right amount of sweetness and mystery that kept me engaged til the end. I would definitely check out the rest of the series.
This book is 7th in a cozy mystery series. I haven’t read the other books in the series. I will say that you don’t need to, but I imagine I would’ve been much more connected to the characters if I had read the other books. It was still a good mystery, and something you can curl up to and read in one day.
This is one of my favorite series and I always look forward to a new one. This one does not fail. When her former director is found dead, librarian Lucy Richardson has another misery to solve before its too late and she ends up another victim. All the recurring characters are so fun and always contribute to the overall storyline instead of just feeling like filler. I highly recommend this series and if you haven't read any of the others this one is a great start. Thank you NetGalley for the advanced readers copy for review.
Another interesting mystery read in this fairly new series, and each one is better and better as we learn more about our characters. Great cast of characters, the wonderful Outer Banks setting, and a mystery that’s keeps you guessing.
A Death Long Overdue by Eva Gates was both engaging and entertaining from the first page. I do love visiting the Bodie Lighthouse and catching up with old friends. Lucy, Josie, Aunt Ellen, Uncle Amos,Bertie, Connor, Charlene and Ronald have all become "real" to me thanks to Ms. Gates' writing.
With a well crafted plot that kept me turning the pages, red herrings that totally lured me away, a few twists that kept me guessing completely until the reveal, I couldn't have been happier spending time with this book. I did love Lucy's total cluelessness about Connor's actions though. It made me laugh at each interaction because I just "knew" what he was leading up to each time. I'm ready to go back to Nag's Head right now.
I am so enjoying this series! I first began reading it last October, when The Spook in the Stacks was part of an autumn book display at my library. I picked it up, took it home, and haven’t looked back. The Lighthouse Library series is such an interesting and fun mystery series and I love the setting, an historic lighthouse on the Outer Banks!
Lucy Richardson has been living and working in the Lighthouse Library for a year now, and in that year, her coworkers, boyfriend Connor, and local police have all gotten used to her penchant for detective work. Maybe it is all the mysteries she has read, but Lucy has a knack for solving the crimes and unofficially helping the police. And the Lighthouse Library does seem to have some sort of unlucky star over it for some folks, as an unusual amount of people do seem to turn up dead near it.
This book is no different – following a class reunion at the Lighthouse Library, the former director, who was not beloved by her patrons or coworkers, was found dead in the water…and it was not an accident. Lucy’s irrepressible curiosity and clever mind lead her down many avenues of inquiry, some alongside Detective Sam Watson, others on her own. I particularly loved the ending of this book! Sometimes a series can grow stale, but this one just keeps getting better and better.
I loved this book, and found myself reading it whenever I found a few free seconds – not easy when I am also parenting a five year old during a shelter-in-place order! Despite that, I managed to read this book quickly – I had to find out the “whodunit”! I think this book is perfect for summer reading at the beach, on a rainy day, or just whenever you need a great escape, and a mystery to solve. The literary references and adorable Himalayan Charles are perfect little added bonuses. I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves a cozy mystery!
North Carolina’s Lighthouse Library is the perfect setting for this cozy mystery. Lucy sets out to find the murderer of the former library’s director while trying to stay out of trouble herself. This is a very fun and entertaining Library Lighthouse mystery.
Lucy is getting library read for her aunt's college reunion. Yearbook photos, old books, and check out slips. Even a crabby old library director.
Murder on the pier.
Lucy, her aunt and other town residents are engaging. This is book 5 in series. It can be read alone, but I recommend the whole series.
I was provided an e-copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I've been reading this series since the beginning and have loved every book.
Even though the former director of the library wasn't part of Bertie's class, Bertie still invites Helena Sanchez to the reunion with Bertie's class. It turns out that Helena has a history with some of Bertie's classmates. By the end of the evening, Helena is dead and several of Bertie's classmates are among the suspects. After awhile it becomes apparent that the murder is connected with a decades ago disappearance and a stolen necklace.
The book is another fun read. The local law realizes that Lucy is a valuable resource. Her relationship with Connor is still strong. Louise Jane, while still annoying, is proving to be more of a help than a hindrance. I'm looking forward to seeing what Eva Gates has in store for the eighth book in the series.
I'm a fan of cottage and cozy mysteries that are engaging and fairly long. This book fits the bill. The location on the East Coast, the Lighthouse, the romance and the mysterious death kept my attention. It's main character, being a librarian, is someone I could relate to. It is a light read and thoroughly enjoyable.
library, librarian, library-cat, amateur-sleuth, murder, theft, family-dynamics, friendship, deceit, small-town, situational-humor, verbal-humor
The head librarian in this Outer Banks seaside lighthouse brings together her old friends from college and on a whim invites a cranky retired librarian who once worked there. All were having fun, including the overbearing self centered volunteer theoretically helping with refreshments who decides that all need to go out for a walk in the dark for whatever misguided reason. It could have gone well anyway except that the odd librarian wound up dead in the marsh. And it turned out to be murder. Lucy is the assistant librarian with the mayor for her boyfriend, an apartment in this same lighthouse, a good relationship with the local law, and a talent for sleuthing. No apparent motive, odd clues, and a possible tie to a priceless necklace gone missing twenty-five years earlier make it really different. Great read in a fun series that doesn't require reading in sequence!
I requested and received a free ebook copy from Crooked Lane Books via NetGalley. Thank you!
This was another solid entry in the Lighthouse Library series. I enjoyed it greatly. It is well written and maybe a bit formulaic but the author uses that to her advantage. I liked how the relationships between characters continue to progress. The mystery itself was enough of a surprise to a plus. And there is a little bit of happiness included for Lucy.
