A charming and delightful romance. Loved the Scottish terminology throughout. A young woman needing to mature and find herself finds friends and romance. Enjoyed getting to the happily ever after. As usual, I skipped over the intimate details.
It was ok. I had a hard time caring about Claire and why she is hiding out in Highland. Her reasons for not wanting to go back home were valid, however, it all ended a little too pat for how much angst there was from her.
Holt is a lovely man. Patient, kind, but not a pushover. Not everyone needs to be an over the top alpha. He’s what saved this from being a 2 star book for me. I disliked Claire that much.
I appreciated the opportunity to read this ARC. It has no bearing on my rating.
This book is not for me. In my opinion, the opening chapters do not match the book description at all. I guess I was expecting a romantic comedy and so far that is not the vibe I'm getting. Usually I enjoy Laura Trentham's novels, but this time I'm having trouble connecting with the heroine. I don't care for the plot either. The setting is interesting and I think the dialog is well-written. The hero and secondary characters also have potential. Since I'm not engaged in reading the story, I will not be finishing this one or posting any reviews online. I don't think that's fair for the author or the publisher. Thanks for the opportunity.
Thanks to St. Martin's Press & NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for my review.
A Highlander is Coming to Town is the 3rd book in the A Highland, Georgia series by Laura Trentham and it was a cute, holiday book! This was my first intro to this series and I can't wait to go read the first two. This reads as a standalone and you don't need to read the earlier books.
The town of Highland is adorable and I'd like to move there. Claire is hiding in Highland while she waits to figure if she will she return home to Scotland and is helping take care of an elderly woman Ms. Meadows. She meets Holt, who is a farmer and he slowly starts to make Claire feel part of the town.
This is a fun and cute story, not super Christmas-y, but it does take place in December.
While I much preferred the other books in this series, I also liked this one just not as much. Something about Claire was a little off. I admire her for going against her family and trudging a life outside of their money and pressure, she just seemed like a hot mess. She admits that caring for the older woman in not altruistic but selfish as she tries to figure out her life. She doesn't take kindness from strangers very well.
Holt is such a sweet, caring and way too understanding of a person, considering all that Claire dumps at his feet but overall I really liked him but not as much depth as I would have liked.
I love the small town feel of this setting, and how everyone sort of embraces everyone. I look forward to more books in this series.
I volunteered to read this book, through netgalley in exchange, for an honest review. This book is well written and the characters are described well. This is the third book in this series. I would recommend reading the first book in this series to get to know the characters better. This book is set in Highland, Georgia. The characters are enjoyable. The pacing of this story is good. The romance in this book is good. This book will be in stores on September 29th for $7.99 (USD).
How could you not fall in love with Holt. Claire has been hiding out for months. Her birthday is coming up and she needs to make a decision. So, she is in Highland, GA trying to work up the courage to go back home. She has been estranged from her family for a while and isn't sure she wants to go back. One day Holt sees Claire in town and tries to help her. She isn't accepting help from anyone for anything. But, Holt worms his way into her life and her heart. She doesn't want to care about him or the woman she works for, but she is starting to care. She is also making some friends. Holt always knew he wanted to stay and work on the farm. He hasn't gone anywhere and that is okay with him. The more he is around Claire, the more he knows she is the one for him. Will she stay in Highland or will she go back to Scotland?
Since his parents left to travel the country, Holt Pierson has been left to manage the family farm, his eventual inheritance, on his own. He’s always been content with following the expected path, but lately he’s been inescapably lonely with no one to share his life with.
Having just left her band, Claire Smythe has decided Highland, Georgia, is the perfect place to disappear. She needs time to figure things out and between the small town and her assumed name, she should be safe from her family finding her. But when Claire meets Holt, she finds herself wanting to answer his curious questions honestly. As Holt brings Claire out of her shell, she begins to find a place in the small town, but she has a duty of her own to see to and can’t stay in Highland forever, no matter how strong her feelings for Holt have become.
I have enjoyed Holt as a side character in the previous two books in this series and was greatly looking forward to his story. The problem is that this is definitely more Claire’s story than Holt’s. Claire’s poor little rich girl angle and ridiculous hiding and flightiness just got old for me very quickly and made her extremely unlikable for me. I wanted to shake some sense into her, and she didn’t start to grow on me until about the last 10% of the book. Also, the intimate scenes here were very vague and glossed over, and since that physical connection was such a key element in the development of the relationship between Claire and Holt, I feel like that short-changed them a bit and took away some of their believability as a couple. Given how closed off Claire was, this seems like a missed opportunity to show them opening up to each other. Claire’s situation would’ve been easily solved with some communication, but she spent nearly the entire book running. I thought Holt deserved better and even though Claire shaped up for him in the end, it still felt a little too much like a happily for now ending. Perhaps that means this series isn’t quite finished but who knows. I did enjoy this one overall and found it cute, but Holt and the general Christmas atmosphere definitely carried it for me.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary advanced review copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed the first two books in this series and felt the same about this one! I was so happy to get Holt's story because he seems like a genuinely good guy. It did not disappoint! I loved Holt and Claire's story and highly recommend this whole series!
Claire Smythe has moved to Highland, Ga. to get away from her home in Scotland, her overbearing parents, her familial responsibility to the family business and, to give herself the space to make the lifelong decisions she's going to have to make on her birthday, the day after Christmas. She gets a lovely job being a caretaker of Ms. Meadows and, realizes that she is starting to grow very fond of the town, the people and, their way of life.
Then she meets Holt Pierson, Ms. Meadows' neighbor, who is just as determined to spend as much time with Claire as he possibly can..
Two hard headed people, both determined to find some peace and happiness in their lives and, both with an uphill battle facing them.
This was a lovely book with a storyline that flows along very well.
If you love to read, find a comfy chair, sit and relax and, open this book!
You'll Love it, too!!
A Highlander is Coming to Town is the third book in the Highland, Georgia series. It’s a lighthearted romance that brings together a Scottish lass with a Georgia gent. Despite their dissimilar backgrounds, there is an undeniable attraction between them. But before they can find their HEA, they have to figure out if they can bridge their differences. A fun and fast read.
A fun and yet serious book, this may be the best in the series. Again set in the small town of Highland, Georgia, Claire is hiding out from her past and her future, while taking care of Ms Meadows. Ms Meadows is an octogenarian and local personality, playing an important role in this story as she becomes the family Claire has always wanted but never had. Claire meets Holt, a local boy, and of course sparks fly. I really enjoyed how this romance built, with lots of forward and back and push and pull as they found their way to each other. Claire and Holt were building something good, each wanting it, but not sure where things were headed. Ms Meadows was a hoot, with her southern charm and wit—both sweet and biting. This slice of small town life was delightful. I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. This is my freely given, honest review.

Holt Pierson, the sexy, neighbor farmer of Izzy's, has been a little down in the dumps lately. He was half in love with Izzy before Alistair scooped her up and his parents have retired to travel the US in an RV leaving him solely responsible for the farm. On a stormy night he picks up a stranded woman, and get a lot more than he expected. I had such high hopes for this book and it just didn't live up to them. What we got was page after page of a whiny heroine and Holt, as the hero, was a real dud.
Holt Pierson is facing Christmas alone. He has sole control over the family farm now that his parents are semi-retired and traveling. And, he is just plain lonely. That is until he comes across Claire Smythe. Holt knows that Claire has secrets, but he is intrigued by the sexy former lead singer, turned caregiver for his elderly neighbor.
Claire Smythe, has chosen Highland, GA to step off the path she has been on as lead singer for a Scottish traveling musical group and make some decisions about her future. She doesn't want any interaction with anyone, but that is just not possible in a small town. Especially when she has a accident and Holt comes to her rescue. It is hard to resist the handsome, ripped farmer, but she knows that nothing can come to a relationship with him.
Holt is an open book and Claire has so many secrets it's difficult to see how they could ever get together. But, Holt is determined and Claire just doesn't have a prayer.
I had not read the first two books and it was not necessary to follow the story. I did find myself wondering about some of the character's backstory though.
I liked Holt and Claire. Claire's drama seems to be mostly self-induced which is highly realistic. She's headed to a deadline that will require her to make a major life choice that she's been running from forever. She finds herself getting more entrenched in life in Highland and finds peace in her new life.
Holt has pretty much always know who he is and what he wants his life to be. Can a beautiful foreigner fit? He'd sure like to find out. It's quickly pretty clear that Claire has secrets and isn't ready to share them.
As Claire and Holt get closer it's obvious she must tell him and her employer more about herself and she likes the idea. But what will they think if they know? Will she lose them?
Eventually, she's ready and it's a good thing but fate is about to force her hand.
I love Claire's tenderness and enjoyment of her elderly employer. Claire and Holt are also so good together. I enjoyed the read.
I read this as a standalone book without reading any other books in the "Highland, Georgia" series. I liked all the characters, except for the Claire (the main character). The book is cute, but the plot leaves the reader with an anticlimactic ending. Claire is hiding out in Highland, Georgia because she doesn't know if she wants to go home to Scotland and the responsibilities that await her there. The chemistry between Claire and Holt is okay, and I didn't really get much of a connection. Mrs. Meadows was a wonderful character and I loved how she softened up to everyone throughout the book!
My Review: I just started with this series this year and have come to adore the little town of Highland with all it's quirky characters and fun festivals. I was so happy to see Holt get his own book, he is definitely a character I really became attached to in previous books. This was also a perfect book to get you into the holiday spirit. I was really drawn in with the mystery and backstory surrounding Claire. I adored Ms. Meadows and loved watching the relationships with her and the people around her grow and shift as the story progressed. This is definitely a feel good holiday romance, though I would recommend reading the previous books first, but I think this is the best in the series so far.
I just adore the world of Highland, Georgia, and this installment was no different. We met Claire in past books as the lead singer for a band, but she takes a step back from that life and uses Highland as a soft place to land. She’s not very forgiving of herself, but slowly, Holt coaxes that out of her. They have such a fun, sexy romance that springs out of nowhere, catching them both off guard. We also get to see other main characters from past books, which is just lovely. I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and was under no obligation to write a review.
My first from this author and although it had a slow start for me, I found myself truly enjoying both the characters and the storyline. Claire and Holt make an unlikely couple but Trentham writes them with heart as they fall for one another despite all of Claire's secrets. I like the idea of a Scot deciding to settle in a town called Highland, Georgia, a very clever little sweet spot to this story. And one that seems to be a recurring underlying theme to this series.
Holt is a true southern gentleman and his subtle courting of Claire is utterly delightful. Claire is skittish that she'll be found by her parents before her 25th birthday, a day in which she'll inherit a business she has no interest in. But both are quite lonely and together with the equally 'lost' Ms. Meadows, clearly the magic of Christmas casts a spell to create a very unique but heartwarming family dynamic.
There is a wonderful chemistry between Holt and Claire and I enjoyed their back and forth as they get to know each other better. Although they fall hard and fast, the author writes it perfectly with characters from prior books there to help guide them and be the support they need when Claire, in particular, is finding herself unable to fully commit to Holt despite her burgeoning love for him. And Holt is simply a good guy who can't resist the fiery Claire and just wants to keep her in Highland for as long as possible.
Sure it's not yet Christmas but this book got me in the mood for happier times when a tree and some sweet memories make everything better. In addition, the author does a great job in giving us a very satisfying ending, showing that even the coldest of hearts can find a way to melt just a bit.
I hope to grab the first two in the series since I am beyond curious as to the prior love stories that get a bit more play in this book. And I enjoyed the author's writing and the endearing characters she has created.
4 solid stars!
Straight forward romance......basics good guy next door, needs to get his happily ever after. This was a cute fun read. If you are looking for a lite romance this is your read.
3-3.5
This was a cute story. I understood Claire's family dynamics but I had a hard time identifying with her. Holt was charming but despite meeting him in the previous two books, I didn't feel he had much depth. Also, not enough Christmas for a Christmas book. I wanted more about the Robert Burns festival. Enjoyed the previous books in the series more.
