An enjoyable story.
This is the third book of a series, and I am sure there will be some spoilers for earlier books.
Anyone who read the first two books obviously was ahead of me on character development and background but this premise sounded interesting to me so I decided to grab a review copy of this one. Unless you want to ruin the surprise, you shouldn’t start here. I wasn’t lost because we do have a section of the story where Greyson magically experiences the memories of the characters from the prior two books, so if I were to try and jump back to the first book, I would already know what happens at the pinnacle of the conflict.
We might be getting into spoilers now.
Rowan is a witch with an ability to speak to animals, but it turns out one significant blow back of that ability is that shifters can turn the magic around and control Rowan. This is what happen in the prior book. Rowan is a witch who was raised by her adoptive mother who was a demon. Her mother made sure she learned magic but not your typical witch magic. She also raised Rowan to fear the Coven Syndicate, who governs witches. She believed that Rowan’s parents were killed by the Syndicate. While Rowan was born with the special ability to speak to animals, she can control other powerful magic as well. But after the happenings of the last book where Rowan was forced to do bad things until she escaped her captors, she is on the run from the Coven Syndicate and more particularly, Greyson Masters who is the hunter assigned to find her. Rowan believes that the Syndicate’s usual policy is to kill witches that are a danger to others and worry about consequences later. In fact, when Greyson found the warlock who was captive with Rowan, he immediately killed him. She feels if the Syndicate ever found out that shifters could control witches like herself, she would not be the only one hunted.
Rowan’s friend decides to hide Rowan in plain sight and sends her to Greyson under the guise of being a low magic nanny for his triplets. The kids are cute and since it is a short book, they quickly grow a bond with Rowan. Greyson, seeing how well they all get along, begins to grow his own bond with Rowan. Part of what helps them grow closer, is working together to raise the girls and help with their magic. After years of juggling life as a single father, having someone who understands and helps him care for his teenage girls, definitely bonds them.
I enjoyed this story. It was a quick read with some good humor and a cute romance. I wasn’t invested in the overall story line so I was much more interested in Greyson, Rowan and the girls, then in the final battle. I came in at the end of the story arc but, especially since Greyson saw the events which took place through the eyes of the other characters, I certainly wasn’t lost. Unfortunately, it didn’t draw me enough to these other characters to make me want to go back to read the prior books.
Rowan is hiding from everyone when her friend sends her to be a nanny for the man who is hunting for her.
Greyson has been hunting for a witch that helped a bad guy but he's had very little luck in finding her.
Rowan is hoping that her new job as a nanny for Greyson will help slow down his progress in finding her. At first that's really all she cares about but the more she gets to know him and his three girls, the more she wants more with him.
Greyson has had a hard time keeping nannies for his three girls who happen to be witches because they can be a handful. Rowan is really good with the girls though and he's glad about that since he has an important job that keeps him away from home for long periods of time. The girls seem to be unique too which is interesting.
When Rowan realizes that danger is headed her way she does what she can to protect Greyson and his girls but things don't always work out the way you hope they will. When danger ends up right at their door, Rowan can no longer hide and Greyson finds out that she's more than he thought she was. But with the help of her friends, she might be able to get out of this alive.
Greyson and Rowan are great together even thought he doesn't know everything about her and when he does find out who and what she really is, I had to read faster just to make sure that he wasn't going to throw away everything they could possibly have together. This book sure kept me on my toes for a while but the ending was great. This series has been great so far. I'm looking forward to the next book now.
Disclosure: I was given an ARC of this book via NetGalley but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Another totally enjoyable, light-hearted addition to this paranormal series. Once again we meet a couple that are obviously destined for each other, and figure that out long before they do so.
Rowan is not what she appears or pretends to be, which leaves her feeling deceitful for keeping secrets, even though they are ones designed to keep her safe. Even at that, however, she is emotionally open and pure, giving the best of herself to those around her. She is such a sweetheart to the triplets, even while giving them the little bit of tough love that they need. And she is totally contrary and sassy to Grey, which is also what he needs, apparently.
I wasn't sure about Greyson at the beginning of this tale. He didn't seem like much of a father or a very nice person in general. But you quickly warm up to him and realize that he is doing his best in trying circumstances.
Most of the secondary players, some we've met in previous volumes of the series, were delightful and interesting to read about, with the obvious exception of Phersephone. But the triplets, their great-grandma, and her cat all made fun characters with whom to become acquainted. I hope we see more of them in future episodes.
There was quite a bit of angst and drama that didn't need to be present in this tale, especially regarding tensions between Rowan and Greyson. Also, there really wasn't a lot of explanation or exploration of the powers that the triplets weild. There really wasn't much explanation or discussion about the primary "bad guy" (who turns out to be a woman). The ending in general wrapped up too quickly. But overall it was a fun paranormal romance, and one that I would definite recommend for fans of the genre. I eagerly await the next installment.
Great book I enjoyed it. I would reccomend reading the previous books before though. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
This is book 3 in the Legendary Consultants and while it could be read as a stand alone, I highly recommend reading the previous books before this one as they are interconnected and some of this characters story is told in the previous books. In this one we get Rowan McAuliffe and Greyson Masters story. Rowan has been in hiding most of her life. She was taught never to trust anyone, especially while being trained in secret. But when she was forced to perform an act against her will, she is now in hiding from the Mage High Council. Grey is the councils best enforcer and hunter. Despite how dangerous his job is, he is also raising triplet daughters. And is need of a new nanny. What better place to hide than right under the hunters nose? After getting to know Rowan will Grey be able to follow his council's orders or will he do what he can to protect her?
I thoroughly enjoyed this one!! Rowan has had a tough life and an especially tough time due to some horrible people. But she is this tough, beautiful soul who still tries to do the right thing. She has a heart of gold and I loved her. Grey lost his wife and was left to raise his girls alone and I love the way he tries his hardest but is so completely lost as to what to do in a lot instances. But he loves them and never stops trying to protect them, even from themselves! I love how they are with each other and the capacity they both have for not only love but to be stand up people who are willing to do whatever needs to be done. Now I just need Delilah's story!! And I can't wait for the triplets to grow up and get stories of their own!
What a discovery! I loved this entertaining and engrossing story and now I want to read the rest of the series.
I loved the fleshed out characters and rooted for them, the world building and the well crafted plot.
I can't wait for the next installment in this series.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
Bait N' Witch is part of the Legendary Consultants series and while this can be read as a stand-alone, I recommend reading the first two books before starting this one.
I love the paranormal aspect of this story. We have witches and witch hunters and a lot of chemistry between the protagonists. Rowan is on the run, being on the Coven Council's most wanted list. She isn't an evil witch she was just coerced into a bad situation by a scheming werewolf. And Greyson is the person appointed to hunt and bring her to justice. From here things start to get interesting. I loved the dynamic between Rowan and Greyson, the romance between them developed organically. They're both well rounded and relatable characters. The nanny plotline worked really well in this story, I loved Rowan's interaction with the triplets. The action is fairly paced, suspenseful but also fun and entertaining. I would have liked a little more insight on the werewolves who were also after Rowan, but nonetheless I enjoyed this book very much.
*Many thanks to the publisher for the free copy in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you Entangled Publishing and Abigail Owen for an eArc. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Bait N’ Witch is a novella of The Demigod Complex, the first in the Brimestone Inc. series. Reading The Demigod Complex is a must in order to understand the events and character motivations in this short story. Shift Out of Luck is not necessary to read before reading this.
The story this time around evolves around witches. I was curious to see how the magic system and abilities would be handled since magic hadn’t really been addressed in the Brimstone Inc. series yet. Sometimes authors either make the characters super powerful or the magic system is unnecessarily complex. Even though all the witches featured here were extraordinarily powerful, there is a weakness for each ability which I think helps in preventing the characters from becoming Mary Sues. The magic system was easy to comprehend and I would like to see it used in future stories set in this world.
The characters are likable and have their own goals. Rowan’s on the run from a witch hunter for something she did against her will in The Demigod Complex and Greyson is the witch hunter after her. At the same time, Rowan is posing as Greyson’s nanny for his triplet daughters. The story has multiple story lines occurring at the same time yet they are balanced and never felt rushed. I was never bored or skim read. The romance progresses throughout and feels genuine. The characters share a lot of time together and slowly gets under the others defenses. It’s slow burn, forbidden romance done right.
Though a novella, I think Bait N’ Witch certainly adds to the story started in The Demigod Complex. This short tale wraps a pretty bow around all the characters and plot lines in the Brimstone Inc. series so far. Excited to see where the story goes from here.
I’ve been wanting to delve back into the paranormal genre for a while now, and this book was the perfect one to wet my appetite for more.
As one of those pesky “must read books in order” gals, I will admit that I didn’t realize Bait ‘N Witch was part of a series, because I probably would have read the previous books first. But I didn’t and it did not affect my enjoyment of this book at all. The author did a great job of giving just enough info to keep you from being lost about Rowan’s involvement in the earlier books without rehashing their whole plots. I now have those on my tbr list.
Rowan and Grey are electric in their chemistry and charming and funny in their relationship as “nanny” and boss. His interactions with his teen daughters are so typical and normal, definitely enhanced by his workaholic tendencies and the fact that he’s a single dad. And I love how Rowan handles their less than enthusiastic attitude towards her. But she’s just what they need.
Great dialogue, an easy to read pace and engaging characters made my first Abigail Owens book a pleasure to read...and definitely not my last!
This is my first book by this Author and I find myself pleasantly surprised
Witch Rowan McAuliffe Is on the run , running for her life ……….. the Syndicate have set their best Hunter ,Greyson Masters , onto her ………… the last person he tracked he killed rather than capture .
With the help of her friend Delilah she comes up with a plan to hide in plain sight ……….. taking the job of nanny
to Greyson's three daughters .
But the past always catches up with you and Rowan's enemies are closing in ……. their only cause ….her death .
Despite their attraction to each other and determined to protect Greyson and his daughters , Rowan will risk all to keep them safe …. even at the expense of her own life .
This was an entertaining read and I will be certain to read other books by the Author .
I was given an arc of this book by NetGalley and the Publisher in exchange for an honest review
This one, wow! We saw a glimpse of Rowan in Shift Out of Luck. Rowan is the witch that Kaios was forcing to deplete the magic of other supernaturals while he started his war. She managed to escape and needed to hide from the Coven Syndicate, otherwise they would execute her.
Delilah set her up to be a nanny for Greyson Masters and his three daughters. Greyson is Coven Syndicates number one hunter and she's hiding right under his nose.
Rowan ends up falling in love with his little witchlings and helping them with their magic, while simultaneously falling for Grey. She can't trust him not to kill her once he finds out the truth so she keeps her distance. She has it under control right up until the house is attacked and she gives up her own life to save Grey.
Such an awesome story! I love Rowan and her sass. I love that she puts big, bad Grey in his place. Absolutely love it!
This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.
I love how the wedding of Tala and Maddock was the scene of so much conflict and had such a large affect on lives of several couples. If you read the previous books, you may remember there was a witch that was used against the "good guys" and now we find out more about here story.
Rowan was held captive and forced to use her powers against Tala, Maddock, Castor, and Leia in an epic battle. She has gone into hiding as a witch hunter has been sent to find her. Since she has such bad history with the Witch's Syndicate, she does not want to take the chance that they will kill her, also. Delilah sends her to hid in plain sight with the witch hunter himself - Greyson.
During this time, Greyson and Rowan fight their attraction as Greyson has to think of his daughters and fight guilty over having feelings for another woman when his wife died in childbirth. Rowan worries that Grey will find out her secret and tries to stay away.
There were only two questions that I would really have liked answered that I did not see in the book - was Rowan't parent's accident really an accident or was it a hit? Why was Persephone treating the triplets to such limited magic lessons?
I loved seeing the addition of Castor, Leia, Tala, and Maddock! Glad that they knew Rowan was just being used! Can't wait for the next book in this series - hope we will be seeing more of Delilah.
Rowan and Greyson make such a great couple with their late night tea drinking adventures and conversation. Who would have thought they were imprinting on each other.
Of course Rowan is in hiding in Greyson's home masquerading as the nanny to his motherless triplets. Between Greyson testing Rowan and the triplets resisting in their own unsubtle way the story starts off like a very intense Mary Poppins but soon all of the household is eating out of Rowan's hands particularly the cat and the ghost of their grand aunt who's haunting their home.
I enjoyed Rowan's tricks to keep Greyson's phone from alerting him and the inroads she makes with her charges but the teacher who teaches the girls magic is not fooled and will do what she can to keep Rowan and Greyson apart and suppress the triplets abilities.
I enjoyed the magic and mayhem of this romance and look forward to reading the other books in this series.
Amusing!
Grey and Rowan's story is humorous and emotional with some action and breath holding moments.
I voluntarily read an advanced copy.
This is the first book that I've read in this Brimstone INC series and, I must say, it intrigued me enough that I'm going to go back and read the first two books (in the series). I enjoy the paranormal genre with witches, nymphs, demons, demigods, and shifters, plus, there was enough subtle humor included to where I found myself snickering at various points and unable to put the book down at others. The author did a good job of tying in the previous two books to where it filled in the backstory so it all came together to make for an interesting story line.
I received a free Advanced Reader's Copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion and I'm happy to have gotten a chance to read this story.
I've thoroughly enjoyed the Brimstone, Inc. series stories that I've read. They're fairly short and easy reads filled with lots of suspense, romance and an HEA.
What an amazing idea to hide Rowan working in the home of the man hunting her for her magical offenses. With just a touch of the right magic applied in several instances, Greyson is kept in the dark about Rowan's true identity.
Rowan's relationship with Greyson's daughters is so fun and heartwarming. I love how she's the perfect mix of disciplinarian and caretaker. The girls, ... and Greyson..., can't help but love her for her sweetness, caring, and smarts.
The charges against Rowan and a surprise return of a past foe make for an intense suspense story. There are secrets and threats that must be dealt with.
I really enjoyed Bait N' Witch and recommend it.
Precious with a side of sneaky. The world is full of magic, shifters, ability to talk to animals, ghosts and more. A witch on the run is hiding in plain sight, but while hiding she realizes everything is not what she thought.
Chemistry is present and they both fight it, the children are delights with unknown powers. This story was entertaining and full of fun. Of course things do not go according to plan and things are all a jumble for a while, but then the ending brings it back together quite satisfactorily.
I have not read the rest of this series, but did not feel I was missing anything to understand and enjoy this story. Thanks for the chance to read this book and share my opinion!
Bait N' Witch is a good well-rounded romance. The writing was good as were the characters. ENjoyed the book.
I've been seeking paranormal romance with lighter plots and not so much murder and suspense, so I've gladly sailed through each of Abigail Owen's re-issued Brimstone, Inc. novellas. The first pairs a demigod and a nymph, the second matches up two alpha werewolves and the third hooks up a witch and the warlock/coven official looking for her. Heads-up: all three are connected and I'm not sure they'd work as stand-alones.
Rowan is on the run from both the witches and the werewolves after being forced by an evil werewolf to disrupt the wedding that happens in the first book and Delilah (the interfering head of Brimstone, Inc) sends her to live with Greyson as nanny to his triplet daughters. I'm not a fan of the falling-for-the-nanny trope, but Bait N' Witch has just enough of the secret identity and when-will-he-find-out plots that I was able to mostly hand-wave away my issues. The triplets' antics add a little levity to the book and while I felt the whole thing was rushed, I was in the mood to forgive a lot.
The writing itself feels un-polished. I always hope that when a book is re-issued, it'll be given another round of edits, but I don't think these first three were. I think the next books in the series will be new and not re-issues, so I have hope that they'll showcase Owen's current writing ability rather than her earlier work. It's great to dig into backlist, but I definitely got the feeling that this is her earlier writing and not the writing of the more experienced Owen. If you've read her newer books, these will feel unfinished. To that end, the prose is middling, not great. However, if you want a quick and fun read, I can recommend this series.

I knew nothing about this author and something in the blurb intrigued me.
I read a few paranormal authors, yet in a few weeks, I discovered three new ones and I loved the insight they give of this very wide world.
Vampires are in the paranormal beings I like the lest, so far I do not find their blood lust very enticing, plus their cruel behavior often leaves me unsettle.
Shifters, I very much prefer, is it because of their bond with their animal side, I just prefer when the mating urge does not devour all the romance part.
And so far, outside Harry Potter, I have only read one or two romances about witches and warlords, I was never very much attracted by this side of the paranormal universe, I do not know why, maybe my upbringing reading Marvel and DC comics, I do prefer forms of life with superpowers.
So It was with very neophyte eyes I began my reading, and I was instantly smitten. So much I read it quite fast. I did not felt lost despite it being the three books in a series and the whole background quite new to me.
The plot was interesting, the characters attractive, and the book in itself answers all the questions emerging from the first chapters.
The open epilogue is a sweet teaser for what might come later.
Rowan, despite she being on the run, looks like a resilient and determined woman, not once broken pat her many ordeals, in fact she comes out every time stronger.
She is not bitter about her fate and what she faced in the past, still able to love and enjoy life even if she knows time is running out.
Greyson is supposed to be the more powerful of the two, yet Rowan, lively nature and inner talent with kids breaches his defenses, she crumbles his walls and opens himself to feelings he buried long ago.
This fast paced and entertaining had me mesmerized at how they would deal with the villains and how they might redeem Rowan her past deeds.
4.5 stars
