I could not get in to this book, so I did not finish reading it......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
I was drawn to this book for the same reason I was drawn to the television show Mad Men. I enjoy reading about the golden age of magazines which in my mind date from the 1950's to the 1990's. Bruce McCall wasn't there that long but he did work during this golden age and really made his mark. His memoir is an erudite retelling of his career that will bring a smile to anyone's face. Great storyteller.
Fascinating Memoir of a Fascinating Life
What an interesting story! This guy has been through some unique things in his life. He has rubbed elbows with the greats and became great himself. I loved reading this book. While I did not recognize the author's name, I absolutely recognized his work. He lists some of the artists that impressed him, I looked them up and love them all. While some of his early life sounds horrible, it was common for those of us living in those years to be brought up that way. He gives a fascinating account of being a cog in the wheel of big advertising companies. He also has some great tidbits like the origin of the original Cannonball Run. His writing for The National Lampoon Radio Hour and the budding comics who were soon to start up Saturday Night Live was very cool. I received this ARC book for free from Net Galley and this is my honest review.
I have been a fan of Bruce McCall for my entire life and this book puts it over the top. From his advertising days to his days at the National Lampoon, he's had the kind of life that seems like a well-read novel - but it's actually the truth!
I've had many New Yorker covers of McCall's pinned to bulletin boards and walls and will continue to do so as long as he's putting them out.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
