A sweet Halloween tale about a little ghost who feels out of place amongst his friends and family but learns that his differences are what make him special. Byron Eggenschwiler's gorgeous illustrations make this book a true delight and the use of limited colors to set the little ghost apart from his surroundings emphasizes the book''s message beautifully.
Thank you to Penguin/Random House for an ARC of this title in exchange for my honest review. What a delightful little book, perfect for Halloween. The message is sweet, but the photographs are just so lovely. I have a couple of Halloween children's books that are tradition, and this one will join them on the shelf.
A little preemptive Halloween goodness. A great story about "being a little bit different," embracing who you are and developing a little self-esteem. I think Scrappy is a good little name for the Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt.
A fun, sweet, readable story, great for Halloween or anytime. A nice message about how our differences can lead to great experiences.
I received this ebook for my honest and fair review. This was a cute book with nice illustrations. The writing was choppy but interesting. This book could have been a few more pages to increase interest.
I thought this book was just so sweet. The Little Ghost really struggled to like himself in the beginning. He just wanted to be like the other ghosts, but instead he was a quilt. By chance, he ends up being wrapped around a cold and tired child. From that point on, he realizes that being a quilt gives him opportunities and a purpose that other, "normal" ghosts would never get to have.
Little Ghost is struggling with his self-worth because he is not like the other ghosts around him. They are white sheets that are light as air and can fly high and fast as they twirl and whirl in the sky. Little Ghost is not a sheet. He is a quilt ... a weighted-down, clumsy slow-flyer because of his layers of fabric. He is unable to fly fast like the others and he gets all hot and sweaty trying. No one can explain to him why he is different but he definitely doesn't fit in. The elite sheets poke fun at him making him feel even worse about himself.
Then on Halloween Eve everything changes for Little Ghost. He finds himself in a predicament that only a quilt will be able to fulfill. His bravery and compassion allows him to help out a little human girl and he realizes that his uniqueness is quite okay... in fact it's marvellous!
The illustrations are colourful, vibrant and expressive. The story brings a message of hope to those who are struggling with being different from the rest of the pack. It is about finding yourself and embracing who you were created to be. Although the theme of Halloween is touched on, the book can be enjoyed at any time of the year. I highly recommend it.
The sweetest Halloween story! I am a huge Halloween lover, and I still cherish the Halloween books I read growing up. This is a charming story that "flips the script"; it is told from a ghost's point of view, and how he overcomes his fears of humans for Halloween night.
This book's illustrations and color palette has an old time feel (50's, 60's possibly). It also has a gentle take on the the celebration of Halloween and ghosts in particular. The main character has difficulty flying like the other ghosts because of his disability (too heavy). He is picked on by the other ghosts and even though his other brings up other differences that members of his family tree surpassed, he was still very downcast. Through a series of unintended consequences, the quilt ghost discovers lots of things he is able to do despite his disability. Differences can serve as needed outreaches of kindness. Though the story has many sweet moments, I wanted more from the ending. I wondered if the girl would miss the quilt ghost. I wondered if the quilt ghost would want to take more adventures and how he would plan them. Yet it is perhaps because of my wonderment and disappointment, the author may have succeeded to instill MORE through subtleness rather than preachiness. I think this book would work well with younger children though they may find the illustrations too simplistic given present-day fare. For this reason then, the reading may need a bit of explanation so as not to have the book too easily dismissed.
A whimsical Halloween book! This little ghost is different from his friends. He’s cloaked in a quilt and feels lonely because all of his friends are sheets. Being different makes him feel heavy and less than his friends. It takes finding his true value on Halloween to lift his spirits (pun intended)!
The illustrations are wonderful and the messages is sweet. Feeling different can weigh you down but what makes you different is special and should be treasured.
This book is a sweet read with kids but it wasn’t one that got an immediate “read it again”. I rated 3/5 stars for its originality, illustrations and fluid read. However, this is a booked I’d check out from the library not a nightly re-read.
An absolutely charming picture book that's appropriate not just for Halloween but all year long. Addresses the topic of being "different" without being heavy-handed or cloying. And the illustrations are beautiful!
This book was too cute! I love the different pattern on the ghost and the Halloween theme. This will be great for Fall! I would reccomend this book to early elementary!
The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt is a very cute and charming picture book. The star of the book is (as the title promises) a little ghost who is a quilt. He is sad because all of the other ghosts are sheets and are much more lightweight so they can float everywhere. the Quilt ghost is too heavy and bulky to float. He doesn't like being different. Then one Halloween he gets to tag along with a mom and a little girl as they trick or treat...
The illustrations in this book were sweet. They were a little whimsical and a little old-fashioned, like something you would see in a classic picture book. We liked the message of self-acceptance and finding your strengths. Everyone IS different after all and it is good to learn to love your differences.
This is a cute book with a great message! Our ghost main character is a quilt while his family and friends are all sheets. Being a quilt is not easy. It makes ordinary ghost business somewhat difficult. He can't seem to keep up with his friends, which sometimes puts him in frightening situations. Then on Halloween, he has the greatest adventure that could have only happened BECAUSE he is different.
The atmosphere of this book immediately made me wish it was fall! It has those great Autumn, spooky, Halloween vibes. The illustrations were great and really put you in the spirit of the season. I loved how our ghost quilt has all of these vibrant colors, while everything else is kind of dark. It really lets you know that even though he is different from other ghost, it is what makes him special.
This is a great book to illustrate that being different, is not a bad thing. Being your unique self can take you on adventures you couldn't have imagined! Kids are going to love this book!
I have received a copy of this book in exchange for an hones t review. Thank you to NetGalley, Riel Nason, Byron Eggeschwiler, and Tundra Books for the ARC!
This is a beautifully illustrated story that teaches how differences can be a challenge while also leading to some amazing things. This is a good choice for Halloween but is not limited to the season. Kudos to the author for evoking such a variety of intense feelings in such a short story. Highly recommended!
A sweet, beautiful book about a ghost who is little bit different. The illustrations are dark, subtle, and gorgeous. The story follows a ghost who doesn't fit in because he is a quilt instead of a sheet. As the story progresses, he learns to appreciate his uniqueness.
Thank you NetGalley and Tundra Books for providing this ARC.
A quilt ghost! How perfect is that? I hope that when I shuffle off this mortal coil I get a quilt instead of a white sheet!!!!!
This little ghost is just learning to "ghost" and his quilt troubles him in a way the sheeted ghosts don't seem to be - the quilt makes him feel hot, it's hard to handle and heavy to move. (One needs to hover as a ghost, and well. . .it's difficult.) Happy circumstances slip up quietly on him during this year's Halloween haunting opportunity and he learns just how useful he can be while he makes new friends. Silver linings all around!
I love this little story about overcoming challenges and appreciating the positive side opportunities bring with all changes. I'm looking forward to incorporating this book in my Halloween quilt display this year!
4 stars (lemoyne), surrounded by four-patch blocks and flying geese, with a final piano-key border, of course.
A sincere thanks to Riel Nason, Tundra Books and NetGalley for providing me an ARC to read and review.
The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt is a new excellent twist on a ghost story. A sweet little ghost is not a sheet but instead a quilt! He's different than all the other ghosts he knows. But soon he has a Halloween adventure that shows him how truly special he is.
I am a major quilt lover/collector so when I saw this book, I knew that I had to read it. This was a sweet story about how being different can let you experience new things in life that you wouldn’t get to experience if you were the same. And how being brave and going outside of your comfort zone can pay off. Plus the illustrations are beautiful and moody enough for Halloween, but not so dark that they are scary. I don’t even have kids and I want this book for my collection.
Strange little story about a ghost who is different, because instead of being a sheet, he is a quilt.
And the ghost is all lonely, and rejected by his fellow ghosts, who mock and make fun of him.
Until he is mistaken for a real quilt and used to keep a little girl warm at Halloween.
So, you would think that the ghost would stay with the little girl where he was wanted. But no, he goes back to join his friends, who for a moment, are intersted in his adventure. It is hard to say what will happen in the future, but I find it hard to believe that the ghosts who have made fun of him will turn around and be actually nice.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
