Thought provoking, radical shifted thinking. I loved this book. I wish I had read this book 20 years ago. It was a beautiful presentation of the patriarchy in a way that opened my awareness to just how ingrained I am to the status quo. It's a required read for any woman.
Takes a look at female figures in myth, religious traditions, politics, and history through the lenses of feminism and storytelling. I think this would be an interesting addition to a Classics course or any history courses honestly.
Excellently written, engaging, fun, and educational - this collection of essays really takes you from the women in mythology and how their destinies shaped our world to where we are now in modern times. I really enjoyed again how engaging this was - a lot of essay collections tend to drag at certain points but this stayed to the point while not losing that dryness.
Cassandra Speaks is an amazing reminder of how important the female voice is in history and in our current political environment. Elizabeth Lesser uses examples from literature to show how the patriarchy has made the female voice and experience nonexistent. Through her book, she has been able to change those messages we received growing up to an empowering lesson.
Elizabeth Lesser writes a thought proving and engaging book. Cassandra Speaks looks at how our origin stories (ex. Adam and Eve, Pandora, Cassandra) have influenced our current society and what this society could look like if women's' voices had been equality represented. Lesser clearly illustrates throughout her book how society could be improved by equally balancing both women's and men's voices and ideas.
I felt that at times the book was a bit long, and thoughts were reiterated more than necessary, but overall it was a well written and thought proving book that I would recommend!
