This book is a good fit for readers who enjoy light-hearted, humorous stories about navigating relationships, jealousy, and self-discovery in the context of modern dating and friendship dynamics.
Just Saying by Sophie Ranald is a romantic read with a lot of stories entwined with a lot of characters. The protagonist of the story is Alice who was a trainee in a Law firm and was in a relationship with another trainee in the same firm. Thinkings start turning down when the head of her department Gordon was removed and Alice should either move to another department or leave and find a job somewhere else but she changes her mind to join a pub as a part-time worker and things start changing as Joe brings his ex-girlfriend to another room so they can share rent as the income from Alice is less. Zoe tries to lure and get back Joe and Alice is hardworking to get crowdfunding for the pub she is working to not get sold out there is another story of Maurice and Wesly who kept a secret thinking it a shameful thing for forty years and which may cause detention to Wesly from London.
The story mainly revolves around these people and how think to get carried down and what happens at the end. I loved reading it and enjoyed the writing style of the author how the story was divided into each chapter and the way the past events of Alice are narrated like her memory than saying it to someone else and the way each character was developed. I liked Heather who was her best friend to whom she confides everything.
The book is for people who love romance with some humour and satire.
I enjoyed this! It was the perfect chick-lit book. I found the main character hilariously relatable. Seriously, who hasn't stalked their new significant others ex on social media? There were points that were definitely frustrating and there are some heavy topics, however i felt they were handled appropriately.
Honestly, this was a struggle to get through. I was hoping for a fun rom com but instead got a lot of drama with a whisper of a romance. Alice lost her job so her boyfriend Joe recommended they get a roommate to help with the bills. Sounded reasonable until he suggested and she agreed that his ex girlfriend Zoe can be the new roommate. Well, that was the first mistake of many mistakes. And it went downhill from there.
There was also a mention and in detail an assault that happened to Alice. It was handled with care but I think it could be triggering for others.
It was hard to like anyone in this book. All the characters were bland and nothing great. I have to say the ending was better than the book itself. Overall, I’m sorry but I didn’t enjoy this book.
I received this ARC from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
What could possibly go wrong when your boyfriend's ex moves into your flat you share with your boyfriend? 🙄 This book was just meh. There was so much disfunction between each character and each relationship that I often found myself wanting to DNF. While I understand the heroine was having a bit of a personal crisis, I felt she was creating even more drama in her life with her boyfriend. Honestly, the whole ex girlfriend moving in was just weird, awkward, and unrealistic. Nothing good could possibly come from that, which it didn't.
Cute book.... I just wanted more. More character details on Joe and Zoe especially. Alice was greatly developed and everything in her life was told very well. The connection and desire that Zoe and Alice showed for Joe was what seemed too bland and I couldn't see the "why" of these women being enthralled by him.
A light read with some deep issues that kept me entertained, but as mentioned - left me wanting more from the characters.
A thank you to NetGalley, Sophie Ranald and Bookouture for providing me with an ecopy of this publication which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
So this is my third book by Sophie Ranald, and one thing has become crystal clear with her writing and characters, she always sucks you in with this humorous and light-hearted writing at first and then BAM she smacks you with the real world situations that literally hits you in the feels.
Everything seems to be going right for Alice. Her and her boyfriend Joe are both lawyers at the same law firm and have been happy in their relationship for the past two years. But all good things must come to and end, and for Alice, everything just seems to go wrong at the same time: she loses a job offer from her firm, she’s no longer able to afford the rent in the house that she shares with Joe, and Joe decided to rent their spare bedroom to his ex-girlfriend Zoe. Talk about a sh*t storm.
This book tackles a myriad of serious topics such as sexual abuse allegations and the MeToo movement with grace.
I will be honest, I was very hesitant with the whole Alice, Joe, and Zoe storyline. I understand that their living arrangement transpired out of desperate circumstances, and the author does a fantastic job of not romanticizing this. Instead she shows how relationships can fall prey to failure when open and honest communication no longer becomes the focal point.
Overall, this is another great read by Sophie Ranald. Don’t go into this one thinking that it will be a fluffy read. Ranald writes characters with grit and interlaces real world problems with a bit of humor
This was just okay for me. I had a super time caring about these characters. They were a little boring. The relationship in the book was...... okay. I don't think they even had a big connection.
I did appreciate the fact that this book covered a lot of bigger topics, though. Gay rights/marriage, sexual abuse and cheating. It dealt with heavier things and wasn't just fluffy. I liked these parts better.
Just an okay read! I didn't dislike it but I will forget it.
While Alice might resonate with other readers I sadly didn't connect with her thus making this story towards love not my cup of tea.
Lovely fun book to dive into, warm relatable characters with plenty of humour. I always like this author's style and know I will have an enjoyable few hours reading. Perfect light hearted beach read
Being a mood reader can be hard. I'm fairly certain I could love this book, however it wasn't grabbing my attention at the time I went to read it. For now, it is a DNF from me, but I can see loving it. It sounds light hearted and fun, and there's a cat! Who doesn't love cats. There is a chance I may come back to in it the future and will update my review at that time.
I was expecting this to be light a fluffy. While it does have some of that easy, chick lit feel, it goes deeper and addresses some tough themes too. I loved the cast of characters and it honestly didn’t take a straight path to an expected conclusion and I love that!
Not your ordinary RomCom.... it has GRIT! I would recommend this book if you like Sophie Kinsella... reminded me so much of her work. Great read by Sophie Ranald! I really enjoyed it!
In these strange times, what you want is a good engaging book and this certainly fits the bill. Sophie Ranald has skilfully blended romance, a sudden career change and some very modern issues to create a compelling storyline with warm, funny characters that you want to cheer on.
I genuinely struggled to put this book down and I'm looking forward to rereading soon as I'm sure I've missed bits in my rush to find out what happens to Alice and her friends.
thank you to the publisher for allowing me the opportunity to read this, but i honestly don’t think this book was for me. there was morning wrong
with it. it was funny and it started out like i was going to really enjoy it but over time i lost interest and i just didn’t care.
Really enjoyed this one as Sophie's humorous writing style was exactly what I needed to get away from current events.
Alice's seemingly great life is about to come to a screeching halt; she's let go from her job as a trainee lawyer, a job she doesn't think she liked in the first place. When she decides to take on a job at a local pub whilst she explores her options, her lovely boyfriend Joe has another idea to help with the rent - getting a housemate. Who just so happens to be his gorgeous, vibrant ex, Zoe...
'Just Saying' was an enjoyable read, which felt like a chat with friends. I was easily immersed in Alice's life. However, there were a few issues (hence the 3-star rating) - firstly, the blurb/tagline of this book sound like an entirely different novel to the one I just read. This wasn't a sassy, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy, but instead a slice-of-life novel which covered some quite serious topics. There was no distinct plot, and it wasn't a 'romance'. (As someone who isn't as keen on boy-meets-girl love stories, this was actually a plus for me, but I feel other readers may be disappointed if they expected more?)
However this was still a great read, and I'll be seeking out more by Sophie as her writing style is just what I'm looking for right now.
I enjoyed this a lot! Going through a tough break up, and I was very grateful for the giggles and oodles of hope from this book. Fully recommend if your heart is currently aching. I look forward to reading more of Sophie’s work!
Thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to read a free advance copy of this book. Unfortunately I hadn't found time during the year to read this book, and so I will be picking up a paid copy in 2021 to support the author instead as an apology.
A light romantic comedy that made me smile and laugh out loud. I enjoyed the book a lot and will definitely read the rest of the author's titles!
Thank you very much to the publisher for the ARC, it was exactly what I needed to read at the end of this difficult year!
This book definitely gave me Sophie Kinsella vibes! I adore Sophie Ranald's writing style and cannot wait to read more of her books!
