I need to start off by saying, I am a political WONK. I thrive on all things politico and this book was no different. She Represents is a powerful book that highlights 44 women changing politics worldwide - the United States is elected woman at record rates - that's something to be proud of. We've come far, but we have further to go. This book was mostly about women in the United States with several highlights on badass females around the world. I appreciate that you learn about politicians from all sides of the spectrum and the author does not bring her opinions or views through.

She Represents is laid out in alphabetical order and in mini-biography form learning about their past, current issues, and several fun facts. I hope you read this book and get inspired from these powerhouses. the last line of the book reads: Draw inspiration from these groundbreaking women to make a difference in your own world. - I couldn't have said it better myself.

I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review - rather than 4 stars, I am giving this book three because on the kindle version of the copy there were a few pages missing and the formatting was off which made this a little hard to read.

Title: She Represents-
44 Women Who Are Changing Politics . . . and the World
Author: Caitlin Donohue
Rating: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
Pub Date: 01 Sep 2020

Thank you Lerner Publishing Group for providing me with an e-ARC of this book via Netgalley in exchange for my impartial review.

I really enjoyed this book, and it was very educational and eye-opening. It featured, just as the title says, various women in places of power changing the world by talking the talk and walking the walk.

I love that this list was not white washed, so focus was also placed on Black women, Asian women, Latina women, and other women of color. Each entry gave us a brief insight into the life and early backgrounds of each woman. It was so interesting to see women from all kinds of backgrounds rise to power in different ways and after overcoming so many obstacles.

The graphics and illustrations added to the book were really good, and they made the book greatly vibrant and more interesting.

I recommend this to every girl and woman out there!

It’s an important read and resource, especially for young people who want to lear more about women in politics to beat back the sexism in politics, about diversity, about making a difference.
It’s going to be published on September 01, 2020.

I gratuated a few months ago in Political Science and International Relations, so “She Represents” was, for me, such an important and powerful read.
This book shows all the ways in which women have contributed to politics and helps imagine a future in which we see more women in power.
What I really liked about this book is the structure. We see a drawning of one of the 44 women, the name, the year they were born and a quote, then we have the years in politics, the position, the party affiliation, hometown and top causes to get an idea of the person. Next, we read about their life story and what’s on her agenda, followed by the achievements and some quotes (which I love). The biographical format makes it very easy and accessible to read so it’s a book for everyone.
There was a great balance of diversity in this book with different backgrounds, political parties, sexuality and race.
I’m obsessed with the palette of colors they’ve chosen for the book.

Thank you to NetGalley for the eARC I received in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I will use this book in my classroom as soon as I can. I love how vivid it is, and the layout of each entry is designed as to be very memorable and engaging. There is just the right amount of information so the students can learn about the women and what they stand for, but without being overwhelmed by minutiae.

What this book does is to highlight women who have been in power and doing one thing or the other in politics and the world at large. These stories are empowering. From stories of immigration, to freedom, to choice, to scandals! One thing I particularly liked about the introduction of this book was the fact that Caitlin Donohue wrote that some of these women might be heroes or villains depending on who's talking about them but there is no denying the fact that they are saying "fuck you" to patriarchy. ⁣

I also particularly love this one for the cover. Just look at it. It's so pretty. The inside too is very pretty and the stories are easy to read, especially with the font. Gorggggggg

With each story I read and each quote from the women, I felt my IQ rising. It was enjoyable and insightful. Kudos to the author.

3.5 stars

Caitlin Donohue has put together a fantastic collection of short biographies showcasing the lives and achievements of forty-four women around the world who have shaped politics. I thought this was an important read: it highlights the power of women, which is too often belittled and ignored.

This definitely is not the type of book you can read large portions of at once. Personally, I had trouble processing the information in this book since there were so many people mentioned in such a few amount of pages. Although I found the biographies interesting to read, I honestly do not remember any names I didn’t already know before—this is not because this was poorly written, but more because the summaries of each women were too brief for them to stick with me. For my own reading purposes, I did not enjoy this format, as I usually prefer more in depth analyses and explanations. However, I think this book would make a great gift for a casual reader or someone who wants a political nonfiction work that is easy to read.

Structurally, my one complaint is that the format was a bit difficult to follow. There were biographies that were a couples pages long, consisting of subsections such as quotes, goals, and achievements. Some of these biographies had portraits (which I thought was an excellent touch!) while others did not. There were also mini-biographies which were roughly a paragraph long. I was surprised to see that some of the most well-known political figures, such as Michelle Obama and Melania Trump, had such small sections. I strongly disliked the inconsistent format, as it made the book seem disjointed and randomly thrown together, instead of an intention collection of political profiles.

I do think I would recommend She Represents to others, especially to younger readers or those who don’t typically read nonfiction. But if you want a more detailed account of politically active women, this might not be what you’re looking for.

I'm so happy that this book exists! YES for women in politics!

Caitlin Donohue does a great job of setting the stage at the beginning of the book. She writes, "Many of the women's stories are inspirational, but politicians are not celebrities." Basically, we should be interested in what these women have done and be inspired by them, but we shouldn't glorify them (something that happens often with the current media cycle). Instead of these women being just a name or a face, we get to learn about them and what they do and believe.

I enjoyed how the "chapters" were broken down: quick facts, biography, political work, quotes. It was just the right amount of information so I could take something away from the section but not be overwhelmed to the point that I'd forget everything. This book has actually been useful already––I've started to recognize more names when reading my daily news and I have a general understanding of that women's political beliefs too, which I didn't have before.

This will be a great resource for teens who are looking to learn more about women in politics, but it's a great resource for adults, too! Definitely inspirational. The illustrations are very fitting with the overall vibe of the book. This will be a great resource for years to come! (Maybe there will need to be a volume 2?)

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book!

Very quick but inspiring read. This contains women and their contributions to politics and activism. I love the content, ofcourse -- I'm a woman of color who has lived in my small country my entire life so there were definitely unfamiliar names but now I'm glad to know about them and the work they have done. I appreciate that the information is concise. It's brief but it's packed without feeling like information overload. The art and design of the book is honestly so aesthetically-pleasing as well. This type of read is definitely encouraging and gives me more hope especially considering the current situation (with the many different issues) around the world.

Some favorite quotes:
"If there is any way that a diamond can compare to a woman, it is in its strength. A woman is resilient, a woman is unbreakable." - Leila De Lima

"A message to women of color out there: stand strong. Refuse to be patronized or minimized." - Pramila Jayapal

Thank you to NetGalley and Lerner Publishing for the free eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Long story short, this book should be in classrooms all over the world. It’s marketed reading age is 13 and up, but I would totally give this to my 5th grade cousin to read. Even at age 24, I enjoyed it and was left inspired learning about these women.

She Represents highlights profiles of 44 women in leadership from both sides of the US political spectrum and from around the world. Readers learn about their journeys to politics, their accomplishments and their stumbles, and their lasting legacies.

I LOVE the idea for a book based on female politicians all across the globe. The layout of this book is organized, easy to read, and entertaining! Each profile highlights the womens achievements, life story, main causes/agenda, and relevant quotes. It’s broken down in an informative non-fiction book for younger audiences. The graphics and illustrations are stunning and really add character to the book and the reading experience.

I needed a book like this when I was growing up to see the female representation in politics that I didn’t know existed as a kid.

Brb catch me gifting this book to all of my teacher friends to have in their classrooms.

I struggled to finish this one. I know I received an eArc, but the formatting was so off that it was almost impossible to read. The pages were out of order and made no sense to me. I’m sure the content was really knowledgeable (hence the two stars), but this book was a no-go for me.

This book does an EXCELLENT job at describing 44 DIFFERENT women in politics.

Each person's description is not long. It's not a comprehensive narrative of each person's history. Instead, it breaks down very concisely who the woman is, what they stand for, their achievements, and then their best quotes. All while going through the history of women in politics. I cannot RAVE about this book enough. Everyone should read it and read what women in politics go through, but more importantly read it for hope. The most important thing about this book is that it doesn't restrict the bios to American women. Instead, it shows women's potential from examples across the world who are currently or recently held office, giving a perfect list of women who are changing the world.

The bottom line of this book is that it gave me hope. Hope for this next election cycle, hope that women will be fairly represented in my life time, hope that this country and world will change. Hope is what we need right now. In a country fueled by hate, this book comes at the perfect time.

I got this ebook from NetGalley release date September 1st.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the layout and the illustrations.
I enjoyed the variety of women and that different women were mentioned including those who may not always be seen in a favourable light.
A 4 star read for me!

I loved this! I will definitely be buying this when it is published. It covers women changing the landscape of politics on a global level, as well as just in America. I loved the list of LGBTQ+ women, the list of judges, and the list of first ladies. It was short and to the point for each woman and I just really appreciated it. I do think more conservative women could've been mentioned, especially ones who are on the national level who you hear about frequently but maybe that can come in book two!

I received this on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review!
I think this book has a great selection of women, and although I wish there were more international women in this book, especially from Asian or African countries, I think the beginning of the book explains nicely why the main focus is on the US. I like that it focuses on women's achievements without only focusing on those that were unproblematic. It opens for great discussions and also highlights what was great by every single woman represented, without being extremely biased. I also really enjoyed that the women's age-group is very wide and varied!

I loved this book! It’s really easy to read and very educational. The illustrations of the women were beautiful and I loved the layout where the author breaks up the text to show the women’s achievements, best quotes, life story and more.

I wish something like this existed when I was younger as it’s so inspirational. One of the best things is the fact it doesn’t just focus on America but women from around the world and women who have had to fight to succeed.

I would highly recommend this to people of all ages as it is such an empowering read and there’s lots of facts about people that many probably have never of heard before.

From an advance review copy for which I thank the publisher. Strictly speaking we're not supposed to post reviews until 30 days before publication, but since this book has about 20 reviews up already on that execrable monopolizing review site-killing Amazon-owned Goodreads venue, I don't see that my modest one is going to make any difference.

Subtitled "44 Women Who Are Changing Politics . . . and the World" this book did not please me. The title suggested to me that these were women who are making a positive change, yet some of the women featured here have behaved reprehensibly and in my opinion they by no means merit the honor this book seems like it's aiming to bestow. There are other, more deserving women, as other entries in the book show, so why those women are demeaned by being included with some of the less praiseworthy women is a mystery to me and I cannot in good faith support a book which takes this tacky tack.

If the book had been titled "Notorious Women of Politics" that would have been a different matter in terms of including the more reprehensible ones, but then the better women featured here would have been slighted. While everyone has some less than savory traits, there is a limit to how unsavory a person can be before they lose my confidence, and I do not believe that you can include all these stripes in one supposedly uplifting book without abominably misrepresenting the one or outright insulting the other.

The book description makes it plain what the intention supposedly was: "...this book celebrates feminism and female contributions to politics, activism, and communities..." and "Each...has demonstrated her capabilities and strengths in political and community leadership and activism..." And "...rounded out by beautiful color portraits..." was a bit of a stretch. I don't believe this book can achieve the stated goal of inspiring when such poor examples have been set by some of those featured in the book and I cannot in good conscience commend it. There are scores of inspirational, stronger, better, wiser, and more competent and considerate women who would have made fine examples. Why aren't they featured here?

As a life long Republican and the founder of an organization devoted to building and supporting the next generation of conservative and Republican women, I am unfortunately very used to many in the media and on the left ignoring the accomplishments and achievements of Republican and conservative women, but I was very excited to see so many Republican women featured in this book! Yes, Republican women shatter glass ceilings and make history too. Although, I did wish the author was a bit more unbiased on some of the portrayals of the women. I walked away knowing atleast more one thing about each of the women that I didn’t know before.

I also loved the vastness of the book — it covered women in Congress, the president’s Cabinet, the Court system, international leaders, First Ladies, and more. It shows young women that there are many different avenues to make an impact!

Overall, this is a super cute and aesthetically pleasing book that teens and young adults will love and a great resource for learning about our world’s female leaders. While I read a digital ARC, I love the illustrations and aesthetic and I know it will be even more awesome in a hard copyI will definitely be recommending it through our organization for Republican women on our website! Thank you to NetGalley for a complimentary copy in exchange for a honest review. 3.5/5

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. So many powerful women in one place! Even though the women featured were predominently from the USA there were a number of notable exceptions such as Jacinda Ardern. I thought the layout was good and loved the illustrations. I would most definitely recommend this to my students.

Informative and timely, the book has all the powers to become a best seller. Beautifully illustrated and thought provoking, clearly very inspiring for young women to tread along brave paths against all odds.

Fascinating. I don’t normally like political bios but this was good, it focused on the women that really made a difference In society and are still active.
