Wow! What a fantastic read!
Neve Connolly is in her 40's, married to Fletcher for 20 years with three children. She receives a text saying to come right away so she goes to Saul Stevenson's, whom she's having an affair with. He is also her boss. She gets there and finds him dead.
From there Neve gets tangled into a web she never would of expected. Between her co-workers and friends, her family, Saul's wife and Detective Hitching, she's trying to keep her story straight.
So who sent the text and why? Go with Neve on this journey of twists and turns that will not let you down. Thank you NetGalley and Book Club Girls for this adventure that I highly recommend!
This was so engrossing. I couldn’t put it down. The twists were surprising but didn’t feel like they were from out of nowhere. Overall very enjoyable!
This was my first Nicci French book and where there were some things I thought we done very well, the story line was a bit convoluted and the main character was hard to like.
LIKES:
1. True thriller. I had no idea who the killer was until I was supposed to
2. The story had truly creepy characters
3. Set in London. I just love London
4. Last chapter… I really liked knowing how it all began.
DISLIKES:
1. Cheating spouses
2. Bratty unforgiving children
3. It took a while to get to the point of who was behind it
4. It felt like it was trying too hard to be scary. And I really didn’t care about any of the characters.
Neve is a mother of three, who finds herself in his lover’s flat with his dead body. As she tries to cover up an evidence of their affair, she begins to suspect everyone of the murder, including her own daughter.
This was a thrilling read with a few twists thrown in to keep you guessing up until the end.
Thanks to the Book Club Girl Early Free Friday program, Amelia Wood and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this novel.
I got half way through this book and ended up stopping. So a dnf for me. It dragged so much for me and it was too descriptive to the point it was distracting. I don’t need to know what her family eats to know what is going on with a murder case. There was just too much going on that I couldn’t keep anything straight I was more lost then anything. I really tried but I just couldn’t.
Thanks to netgalley for the copy of this for my honest opinion
Full review to come on Goodreads and Amazon. Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for a review copy.
I just finished reading The Lying Room by author Nicci French. It was my first time ever reading a book by this author. I would consider the genre to be a mystery/psychological thriller. It wasn’t as exciting as I’d hoped it would be but it did keep me guessing. It’s the story of Neve, who is a married woman and mother of 3 who I believe experiences a midlife crisis because she has an affair with one of her bosses from work all because she is bored with her life and marriage. The boss ends up being murdered in the flat where they have their sexual encounters and Neve is the one that finds him. This is where all the lies start to get really out of hand. The rest of the book is trying to figure out who really killed him and how do you lie to cover up your previous lies. I can honestly say I never figured it all out but I was happy with the conclusion. I’d like to thank the Book Club Girl Early Free Friday program, Amelia Wood and NetGalley for the arc to read and review. I’m going to rate this at 4 stars!
This was a great thriller! Inc I French is a wonderful writer and can create a wonderful story. A woman’s one night stand goes wrong when she finds her lover dead. That’s all you need to know. Just enjoy the ride.
Nicci French does not disappoint. Have become such a huge fan of this author that I am excited to pick up anything when I’m wanting a good twisty thriller. Suspense that keeps you guessing and engaged all the way through.
I tried to really get into this book but it didn’t grab me in the beginning. I am sure it was just me and I would still recommend you to try to read this book to give your own honest review.
A dark twisty thriller in which Neve starts her morning with her mundane family routine which is quickly upended with a text from her lover (& boss) to meet him. When she finds him murdered she quickly wipes clean all trace of her existence in his apartment. The rest of the book introduces a cast of characters that all quickly become suspects and a detective that shows up at inconvenient times. With every new lie and every new misdirection trying to save herself and her daughter Neve descends further into the darkness and danger with a killer watching her.
While this does not have a likable cast of characters this book teach the reader the consequences of bad choices and how far one little lie can take you.
This is my first book by this author and I'm definitely now a fan. This book definitely kept my attention and I couldn't put it down. I didn't figure out who the killer was so it surprised me for sure.
I was approved to read this book back when I was new to NetGalley and was still learning the ins and outs. Unfortunately, the book was archived before I had a chance to finish and review it. Luckily, I found a copy in my local library app and was finally able to read it! I'm so glad I did. I really enjoyed it. I loved that there was a good mystery with interesting characters and a couple unexpected turns in the plot line. I also enjoyed the little bits of humor that were sprinkled in every now and then. I've already recommended it to several friends! Better late than never, for sure, with this book!
This was an interesting mystery. It begins with the main character, married mom of three Neve, finding her lover murdered. She does not want their affair uncovered, so she cleans up the whole mess to hide any trace of their connection. We get to know her family, coworkers and friends as the detective assigned to the case tries to sort it all out. I found it rather hard to believe many of Neve’s actions, but I found the book hard to put down. I didn’t figure out the murderer until almost the end.
Overall, I did enjoy the plot, and while I didn’t ‘solve’ the mystery, the end wasn’t shocking in anyway. It felt believable and made sense. Sometimes those super shocking, twist endings feel really forced so I appreciated this ending. My only real complaints are two really minor and superficial things: The name Neve for the main character. It’s not an unheard of name or anything, it just doesn’t flow well when reading. The second thing, most of the chapters were so long. There were so many natural breaks in the writing that could have ended a chapter. As someone who normally sneaks in a chapter or two on a quick work break, the longer chapters make it harder to fit in a quick read.
Another well written book by the authors behind Nicci French.
The lying room is a thriller full of suspense that keeps you wondering who is the killer. It is the tale of a middle age married women, Neve, who has an affair with her boss, Saul. Neve is summoned to go to her lovers’ apartment where she founds him death, after that the story revolves around her trying to hide their relationship and trying to avoid being arrested as the killer.
Enter her rebel daughter, her cheating husband, Neve’s lies to her family, the police, her friends, Saul’s wife to try to save her marriage. She realizes the need to find the killer before the real killer tries to kill her.
The book keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end, you won’t guess who the killer is and the motive of why he/she did it.
Neve Connolly is feeling overwhelmed and unappreciated at home. Her biggest mistake was having an affair with her new boss, Saul. Things get more exciting when she receives a text the next morning to meet her lover at the apartment and she walks in and finds him dead on the floor. A more rational person might have called the police, but she is paranoid about people finding out about the affair and the impact the news might have on her family. Instead of reporting the murder, she decides to clean up the crime scence in an attempt to cover up any evidence of her presence. By doing this, she also destroys any evidence from the actual killer. The book takes you through Neve’s gnawing guilt about what she has done and second guessing herself on whether she was careful in getting rid of everything. Unfortunately, she realizes that she forgot a very distinguishable piece of jewelry that could easily incriminate her. She goes back to get it and her jewelry and the murder weapon are gone (cue the sound effect). Because Neve has always been the strong one, everyone turns to her including Bernice, the grieving wife of her dead lover. Bernice confides in her that she thinks her husband was having an affair. Neve also has to deal with the Chief Inspector Alastair Hitching who likes to stop by at the most inconvenient times. Does he believe her or is he just letting her drown in her lies? Who can she really trust with her secrets? Who was really the intended target? One thing I like about this genre, is that everyone looks suspect including the troubled daughter. I like how characters are thrown into situations and how bad decisions can cause everything to spiral. I admit that I did not guess the actual killer, which is good. As others have stated, there were some times where the book dragged due to too much detail about domestic life. There are some plot holes the reader has to overlook (we all watch too much Law & Order), but I would still give it a solid 3.5 stars if I could. I would read other books by this writing team.
Thank you to #netgalley for the copy.
The Lying Room by Nikki French is a mystery rooted in infidelity. When Neve finds her boss/lover in his apartment murdered, Neve immediately tries to erase all traces of their infidelity from the place. But that raises questions when the police start to investigate and the story moves through Neve’s attempts at cover-ups. The characters in this story aren’t very likeable but I did find myself wanting to keep reading to find out who really did kill Saul. This is an ok story for people who like mysteries but it really wasn’t anything special.
I love books like this: woman has affair, guy ends up dead, so what does the woman do? I think my instinct would be to do what Neve does, which is try to make it seem like she's never been with this guy. I, however, wouldn't be able to stomach the ensuing inquiries from detectives if I missed anything. I really loved this book and would put it in the category of unputdownable.
One of my favorite authors. This is a standalone, but a very interesting read as always with this author. Neve pays a visit to her lover and finds he has been killed after their indiscretion last night. Neve is very rattled by this since this indiscretion, if made known, could unravel her very well put together life with her husband and family. While she will miss dear Saul, her lover, she must erase all indications of her presence in his life. In doing so, she also erases evidence of the murderer. When the deceive comes to question her, she realizes she has missed something. Will she survive this and put all this behind her, so her nice, quite, family life can continue as if she never met Saul? The suspense begins....
Thank you Net Galley for supplying the ARC.
