Devoured - like the first slice of pizza on a well deserved vacation where you get to break “the rules” on your diet. And boy was it SO good. In many ways, this story is about breaking the rules, it’s about betrayal, secrets and lies. It’s about what you would do for family and friends and what happens when you betray family and friends. Our main character, Neve is having an affair with her boss, Saul, and as far as she knows, they’ve been able to keep it secret. It’s something that has made her feel alive and helped her escape the pressures of losing her business to a merger and the challenges she faces at home with her troubled daughter, Mabel. She’s able to hide her absences due to long work days and hanging out with her newly single, long-time friend and business partner, Tamsin. All of it comes crashing down when she walks into her lover’s flat and finds him quite dead. It’s clear someone has murdered Saul. Now, Neve has to watch her back, avoid getting pinned with the crime and try to keep her secrets hidden, but if she didn’t do it, who did?
This is a new author to me and I’m not joking about devouring the book. I will be following the author and looking for more. It was a guilty pleasure read. I received this ebook through Book Club Girl Early Free Friday via NetGalley.
I was pleasantly surprised with this book.
It was engrossing, and it being a slow burn really kept me on my toes wanting to read.
I almost laughed at each time she tried another way to protect her family would blow up in front of her face.
This was a great thriller and I enjoyed this style writing!
This was a great thriller that kept you guessing until the end. Neve is caught up in a murder investigation, and her whole world threatens to shatter. How will she prove her innocence and protect her loved ones?
I loved this book....nice easy read with lots of twists and turns. Had me guessing...incorrectly...the whole time..
The Lying Room was a fast-paced, tense murder mystery. The main character, Neve, finds the body of her lover at the very start of the novel. Her lover is also her boss, so that further complicates matters. She inexplicably decides to clean up every trace of her ever being at her lover's apartment. Mainly, she wants to avoid her husband knowing about the affair. That decision to tamper with the murder scene is just the first of even more cringe-worthy decisions made throughout. Once the police start to investigate the murder, Neve has a difficult time keeping up with her lies. No matter how she tries to avoid it, the questioning begins to center on Neve and her family.
I don't think that I have ever read a book that keep me more on edge, as Neve gets more and more tangled in her lies.. She feels her only option is to investigate the murder herself. I really cared about her character and worried how she was ever going to get out of this situation.
I really enjoyed the book and recommend it.

Once you start lying, you have to keep your story straight. Especially if you are covering a dark secret, like your love affair’s murder.
Neve is trying hard to hide her affair. But when her lover turns up dead, she goes to the extreme to keep her affair under wraps. Is she implicating herself as the murderer? Can she keep her story straight?
Twists, turns, and lots of tension keep you turning the pages of this thriller. You won’t want to put this one down!
This was really well done mass-market suspense by an old favorite. Great cast of relatable characters, and an ending that I did not see coming. Pick this one up for a great beach read!
I received an electronic copy as part of Book Club Girls Free Book Friday.
I enjoyed this book from Nicci French. I was intrigued from the beginning, but I didn’t have trouble putting the book down to do other things. I would definitely read more books by Nicci French.
Difficult book to put down. Very interesting thriller revolving around a woman with a seemingly good life and her affair with a married work colleague. So as to not reveal any of the storyline and it’s conclusions, I will simply say that I enjoyed the suspense, the plot and the ending. Nicci French has been a favorite author of mine since her early books.
This was my first read from the author. I liked the book from the very beginning. The story starts with a murder and then the reader has to enjoy the characters and how they develop and discover the killer. This book has lots of detours related to the final conclusion and the reader can't guess, at least I didn't until I was told. I enjoyed reading about the characters and how they each fit into each others lives. You cannot guess any of their stories, especially Fletcher's. I could image this book as a mini movie or a series. I am uncertain how I feel about how the writer talks about the events that lead to the end. However, I enjoyed the book and I recommend it. I may recommend it for one of my book club selections.
The Lying Room is a who dunnit that keeps you guessing until the end. Neve, the main character is having an affair and her lover is murdered in the apartment they meet in. She covers up their affair, but is dragged into the investigation, all the while trying to figure out On her own who murdered her lover. The book is well written, keeps the suspense building, and throws in a few twists before revealing who committed the murder and why.
There is a typo at the beginning of chapter 4 where Mabel’s name is written multiple times. It is spelled “Mable” once.
The Lying Room is about Neve Connally, the perfect mother, the perfect wife, who has an affair with her boss. Unfortunately for her, someone murders her boss, and she finds herself trying to cover up her involvement with the victim in order to protect herself and her family. Neve is a very likable woman, the confidant of her many friends, and the reader will like her as well and will pull for her to be able to extricate herself from the increasingly dangerous situation she finds herself in. The suspense builds steadily with plenty of suspects and a twist at the end. A very enjoyable read, I give it four stars.
Full disclosure, I love Nikki French’s books. The writing is excellent and the characters are fully developed. This is the first stand alone book I have read from this author and I was not disappointed, Neve is overworked and under appreciated, which leads to an affair with a boos. The affair ends when the boss is murdered. While there are many twists and turns in an attempt to solve the murder, I loved the way that Neve could look at her life and be reflective on her own and others’ actions. I could read this book all year!
This is an unexpected who done it that takes you places that you couldn't imagine. It starts out as a ho hum story of a middle aged married woman who has a fling with her new boss. After she discovers him dead the story just takes off and is hard to put down.
Cutting to the chase — I liked this book a lot. I would say “loved it” except this was a tough ride to take. When I started reading this book, I was a little doubtful that I would like the main character Neve. She is a flawed human in some ways such as what appears to be an overactive sense of obligation to everyone in her life. And this is also a story about secrets; her secrets, her co-worker/ life long friends’ secrets and her family’s secrets. Secrets always bring complications but when covered up by lies, it brings trouble for those caught up in the secret or the lie. Almost every character has a secret they are hiding. Neve has made some bad decisions and doesn’t fully understand what she wants to do with her life. She, like many people in real life, sought fulfillment or validation through an affair. But Neve also reacts to situations in ways that are atypical while still appearing to be the person that has her life together. The author does a great job building suspense in unfolding the mystery in this book and revealing the lives of Neve’s friends. The characters are dealing with problems a lot of us deal with daily which makes them relatable. The story keeps you guessing right up to the end. If you love stories that weave real life circumstances with unpredictable responses, you will want to read this book.
This book was just ok. The pacing was off. The first part really dragged and was hard to get into, although it became more engaging for a bit in the middle.. I was intrigued enough to keep going to find out who did it.. By the end though, it just felt very repetitive and unrealistic. The constant mentioning that the main character was getting on her bicycle became really irritating. #Netgalley
I haven't read a Nicci French book in a while, so I was glad to find The Lying Room available through NetGalley via The Book Club Girls. It was an enjoyable thriller even though I have a hard time when the characters are so unlikable. Very well-written and held my interest throughout.
The writing seemed a little convoluted and basic at times, while the characters weren’t appealing. The story didn’t come together very well for me.
I’d rate it a 3.5 out of 5. It was a very well plotted, page-turning murder mystery. There were so many suspects and of course, the murderer was the least obvious. I kept wanting more backstory, though. I wanted to know more about their daughter Mabel. I would have liked more background on Neve’s husband Fletcher and their life together and his artwork. Overall I enjoyed it and I would definitely read more books by Nicci French. This was the first of hers (theirs) that I’ve read.
OMG!! Could not put this book down! One of the best thrillers I have read in a long time! Definitely a must read!!
