A great book for kids to be introduced to Alexander Hamilton.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for my ARC. All opinions are my own.
An excellent primer for the Hamilton fans out there that are interested in diving a little deeper into Hamilton, especially those set aflame by the recent release of the Broadway musical. I selected. this book to test on my 10 year old, but he felt it was a little young for him. I would recommend it more for the 3rd and 4th grade set, based on content and vocabulary. I would recommend this as a must-buy to elementary school librarians this fall. Teachers will be pleased with the comprehension quiz at the end, as well.
The Story of Alexander Hamilton by Christine Platt is a perfect introduction to the life and accomplishments of Alexander Hamilton for young readers. I picked this up with my sixth grader in mind, but I think a better age would be the 3rd or 4th grade.
The illustrations and graphics are wonderful and serve to augment the text quite nicely. I also liked the way the author posed questions to the reader to give them a chance to think more deeply about events in Hamilton's life.
I have thought it my duty to exhibit things as they are not as they ought to be.
Alexander Hamilton continues to make a name for himself 200+ years later. With the Broadway Show Hamilton, you see the passionate man that he was. The show was amazing and I was not disappointed. The book is for young readers that introduce the man that Hamilton was. His family life and the loss of his mother. His fight for freedom for all men and how he started the banking system we now have. It ends with his untimely death and how his legacy continues on even today.
Each chapter gives significant turns in Hamilton's life that ends with a timeline. It also gives reason for the reader to think about their own decisions and how Hamilton's decisions changed the course of freedom.
A Special Thank you to Rockridge Press and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
Wonderful kids biography of Alexander Hamilton. The details of his life, accomplishments, and death are well written for kids. I highly recommend this for your children's library.
First sentence: Alexander Hamilton was born on a small Caribbean island called Nevis. As a boy, he loved to read. He also liked to play tricks on people. Those who knew him couldn’t have imagined that the young troublemaker would one day grow up to be one of America’s Founding Fathers and help form the government. Surely Alexander never thought his face would one day be on a ten-dollar bill!
Premise/plot: The Story of Alexander Hamilton is a chapter book biography for young readers. What you see is what you get, a biography written in chapter book format geared towards an elementary audience. It is packed with details that are appropriate for the audience. While the biography would include other details if intended for an older audience, I think this is a good balance all things considered.
My thoughts: I definitely enjoyed this one! I don't think I had an idea of who Alexander Hamilton was when I was in elementary school. I don't think the peanut butter chewing GOT MILK commercial came out until I was in junior high. Then I became curious about Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. But I did enjoy biographies when I was young. And I looked for two things really PICTURES and BIG PRINT. It's hard to tell font size on an e-book, but I definitely think this one would have proved just right.
This book has great graphics, fact checks via myths and facts and a multiple choice quiz.. it strikes me as the perfect design for today’s young students. The appeal of the interaction is a key to kids who spend much time learning and playing via technology. Since the movie of the Hamilton musical will be showing soon, this book could be great preparation to enhance enjoyment and understanding of that production for school age children. I plan to try it out on several of my grandchildren! #NetGalley

This book was beautiful - a great book for early readers. The information was very interesting and the illustrations were nice.
This biography of Alexander Hamilton for young readers was very well written and described many of the most important details of his life including his immigrant status to becoming one of the most important Founding Fathers of this country. The chapters included his role in the Battle of Yorktown, his famous writings, Secretary of the Treasury, loving husband and father, and his once friendship with Aaron Burr that ultimately turned into a deadly duel.
I loved how the author included jump in the think tank and the myth/fact charts within her chapters. Young readers will find this helpful for critical understanding of the text/inferencing skills and to synthesize information. The author also included a short quiz (answers supplied) and a glossary.
Overall, this was a very well organized, beautifully illustrated, and educational book for this age group. It should be included in classroom libraries.
An ARC was given for an honest review.
The Story of Alexander Hamilton is a children’s biography chapter book complimented with scattered illustrations and charts. It begins with a Table of Contents outlining chapters 1 through 8 from even before Hamilton's birth to his untimely death. I must admit, I learned quite a bit about Hamilton from this little 43-paged book. It was especially helpful to have thought-providing questions posed throughout the chapters — thinking questions that will help children stop and ponder things like: what must life have been like when… ? There are also side sections like “Myth & Fact,” an illustrated family tree, famous quotes, and maps to remind the reader where things took place throughout Alexander Hamilton’s life. Comprehension questions are also posed as a quiz at the very end with an answer key provided. The book concludes with a glossary and bibliography of books, government websites, and historical sites that can be visited. One thing I noted during my examination of this book was that the ARC has a family tree where it indicates Alexander’s birth as 1775, so hopefully that will be corrected in the final print copy. Thanks to Callisto Media and to Netgalley for providing an Advance Reading Copy so that I could share my honest review.
The Story of Alexander Hamilton is an illustrated chapter book appropriate for middle grade students (and perhaps a little younger if the child reads with an adult). The book tells the story of Alexander's life from his childhood in the Caribbean through his life in the colonies and the US. The content is age appropriate and written in a manner that will keep the kids engaged while also educating them.
The illustrations in this book are appealing and colorful. The illustrations depict not only Hamilton and his family but include quite a few maps to show the locations that played a role in Hamilton's life. The book also had a few break out boxes for myth vs. reality and questions to make the kids think.
I like Alexander Hamilton a lot. He was a good man and fought very hard for our country. I thought this children's book was so well written. It will help kids learn about our country's early history.
It was so easy to read and had lots of illustrations and extras. I liked the think tanks portions, it made you stop and think about what you just read. I also liked the myth vs truth sections.
The glossary in the back will help with big words that are important. I also loved that maps were included throughout the book, it helps to know where things are at.
I highly recommend this book for your child to learn about history.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This title is part of a series of biographies for elementary school aged students. It is a book with short chapters and many illustrations. In addition, there are many sections to enhance a reader’s experience including “Jump in the Think Tank” with questions to consider, myth and fact sections, maps, timelines, a vocabulary list and a quiz. All of these will reinforce learning.
Alexander Hamilton may well be known to kids because of Lin Manuel Miranda’s musical. This awareness may entice them to want to learn more about this highly accomplished man. Readers will discover that Hamilton faced tragedies, was an immigrant to the U.S., was antislavery and played pivotal roles during the Revolutionary War and after. He also died as the result of practices during the times in which he lived.
This book could easily have a place in classrooms or could be enjoyed at home. Even adults may learn some things about Hamilton that they did not already know.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, Callisto, for this title in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first book in this this series I have read. I was very, very impressed by this. (Which is saying a lot because I am not a big nonfiction person). Perfect length and full of a variety of formats. Loved the pictures thrown in, the questions for thought, timelines, maps, etc. I even liked the quiz at the end. This is a great way to introduce biographies to elementary students. I am going to purchase this for my elementary library along with others in his series.
