This book gave you a good base, went over all the types of tools, added in how to add color to your project, and then went over some actual projects you could do and added templates. I can see this being awesome for a complete beginner and someone who has fooled around a bit.
I received an advanced digital copy of this book from the author, publisher and NetGalley.com. Thanks to all for the opportunity to read and review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
The is a great book for the beginner woodburner. The projects are easy to follow and beautifully photographed. In fact, my review is horribly late because I wanted to try them all!!
Great addition to the DIY library for any crafter!
5 out of 5 stars.
I have a wood burning tool that I use to cut mesh fabric and was interested in seeing how this tool could be used as it was intended. I thought that this would be a good book to start with and I was right. The instructions were clear and easy to follow and there are many examples for different skill levels. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning wood burning.
I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review.
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* My grandpa was really into woodwork os I wanted to get into some of it and wood burning seemed like something I could do even more so after I read this book! really want to buy a copy and do the cutting board :o
I've done some wood-burning in the past many years ago but not as a serious art form. This book was very well written and presented. It gives a great overview of tools and techniques And is perfect for beginners.
I highly recommend this book as a resource for learning pyrography techniques.
I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
Although I don't have my own pyrography set, I have been wanting to give it a try sometime in the future, which is why I went ahead and requested the ARC for this book. This book is very comprehensive, and includes projects that are for both beginner and more advanced people. When I eventually get a kit, I would love to try out one of the projects listed in this book!
This is not your grandather's woodburning! All I can say is wowza! Ms. Locke is incredibly talented and an excellent mentor for those wanting to get started doing this hobby.
You will defintely want to own the print copy of this book as it is full of patterns and templates you can use to help create your own woodburned masterpieces. The author very carefully covers safety issues, needed tools, and many suggestions for success. In a world that has been spending more time at home, woodburning would be a wonderful use of your time and offer a way to create your own unique gifts at a fraction of the retail price.
This could be a very fun hobby to work on as a family with teens (with proper supervision). You can grab your copy at Amazon! This would make a great gift for the wood enthusiast on your gift list! I highly recommend this book--so full of helpful information!
Disclaimer: I received a digital copy of Creative Woodburning from NetGalley for the purpose of review. No other compensation was received.
I've done a little bit of woodburning in the past but mainly just dabbled. This book was amazing! It gave you a good base, went over all the types of tools, added in how to add color to your project, and then went over some actual projects you could do and added templates. I can see this being awesome for a complete beginner and someone who has fooled around a bit. That said, I didn't get a chance to follow any of the projects in this book but it did get me excited about starting woodburning again.
"Creative Woodburning" is a guide on how to do wood-burning projects to make works of art. The author started by describing the different equipment you'll need for safe use during the wood burning and provided tips on the easiest-to-work-with wood. She described various techniques for wood burning, like shading, blackening, and stippling, in enough detail that I felt confident that I could do it. The author used templates to create her designs, and she provided the templates for the projects in the back of the book. She also described how to get the template onto the wood. She also talked about things like staining the wood or the different ways you can color the wood-burned art. She then provided a variety of projects, from decorating a jewelry box to a wooden egg or a clock face. While she described how you would do the project, it's not the usual step-by-step description with matching illustrations, yet I felt the earlier techniques sections provided all that was needed to complete the projects. Overall, I'd recommend this book to those interested in learning how to do wood-burning art.
This book was very informative and had a lot of really nice templates at the back for some very simple all the way up to very intricate designs. The book went over the different types of materials that can be used in woodburning, which includes cork and canvas! There are beginner instructions, safety and tips for completing each project. This is definitely a book that I would purchase because of the unique templates that can be copied and reused on numerous projects. The only negative about the book is that the descriptions of the woodburning tips did not include detailed pictures of each tip and the tips pictured were not the same as the ones I have in my basic kit. For a beginner, this may be important. Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. #CreativeWoodburning, #NetGalley
This book has some incredible work in it and it is inspiring. While I’m not at the skill level that this individual is, maybe I can get there some day with practice. This book is really helpful if you are interested in wood burning.
Creative Woodburning is a tutorial and technique crafts guide to pyrography by Bea Locke. Due out 11th Aug 2020 from Penguin/Random House on their DK imprint, it's 128 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats. As almost always with DK's offerings, I was blown away by the detailed, clear, and solidly expert photography. Every photo is well rendered and easy to follow. The supportive text is also clear and spare.
The book follows a logical layout. The instructions presuppose no previous experience on the reader's part. The book begins with an introductory section which covers tools and supplies. It includes recipes and definitions for everything from materials selection, to sourcing and preparing, linework, shading, stippling and more.
Roughly the next third of the book contains the projects. They're attractive and look very professional. Each of the tutorials includes a finished project picture, difficulty rating, tools and supplies, and step-by-step instructions. Tips and advice are highlighted in text bars in the tutorials to help readers avoid pitfalls and achieve the best results. Process photos are included in most of the tutorials and are clear and easy to follow.
The final section includes all the necessary design templates. They are well drawn and easy to print out and follow.
Really lovely job. I think that an aspiring crafter could make most of these designs armed with this book and the necessary supplies and tools listed.
Five stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
Wow... beautiful and interesting book! How to make some ordinary...extraordinary. I like types of wood carvings and such but this wood burning book definitely caught my eye. Maybe a lost art but the ridiculous amount of naked wood at your nearest hobby lobby can turn into a beautiful work of art with some stenciling and burning.
What did I like? Besides the eye catching detail in this book, and the beautiful stencils, there is a wealth of tips. Shading, and even painting, or preserving your design also. The author even gives you a peek at some of the types of wood burning kits from 30 dollars to the hundreds of dollars, depending on your seriousness.
Would I recommend or buy? If your interested in wood burning then this was a really cute book. I enjoyed the designs and the tips. I would definitely buy and recommend. Book is relatively short but really has what you need.
Thanks to the publisher for a copy to read and offer an opinion.
I loved this so much. I have a woodburning kit and didn't know what to do with it. This book has ideas, techniques, tips and the best is the templates.
So much helpful information on how to shade, what clothing to wear, types of wood to use, painting and staining. There are also different project ideas that you can do in this book. It shows you how to complete it and what you need in order to make it look great. In the end this book also has the templates you will need in order to complete the projects. I have been wanting to try wood-burning and this book helps me to get started and lets me know what I need to begin learning.
This is a book that is beautifully presented. The projects are gorgeous. The beginning of the book discusses the tools, the types of wood, tips and tricks, painting your projects and care of your tools. There are also recipes for staining and sealing. The projects are very diverse and you will surely find some to suit your tastes. There is vast amount of encouragement for the beginner in that the author suggests the purchase of only five different tips to begin your journey. You don’t have to buy a vast about of nibs/tips to achieve success. I think one of the most encouraging things is that the author provides templates for all of the designs at the end, so you can transfer them and have really nice results even if you do not believe that you are not a great artist. I think this book is a great tool for learning this craft. The photos are clear and crisp. If you have the notion to begin your travel in this craft this is a great place to start. Well done.
I would like to thank DK Alpha publishers, Bea Locke, and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A very good book with lots of useful information on several varied techniques and styles. The one drawback is that is is specifically for wire nib pens and has no information regarding solid tipped pens. All in all a good book and very useful to novice pyrographers.
Absolutely amazing. The writer details how one can complete a wood burning project. Each phase is discussed and the appropriate tools, tips, tricks are also given. There are templates, recipes for sealing and detailed projects for all skill types. Purchase your supplies and start burning.
First off, you need to know that if you own one of those inexpensive little wood burning kits or are looking for projects for your child to use theirs, this isn't the best book for it. This book is designed for folks who are willing and able to buy the good tools and lots of different nibs to get different effects. That said, the projects are really diverse and beautiful. Best of all, the author provides templates for all of the designs at the end, so you can transfer them and have really nice results even if you're not a great artist.
Some of my favorite projects were an utterly gorgeous wood burned rolling pin, the cutting board, wooden spoons and bowls. And no, they're not all kitchen themed. I think my love of cooking just comes through in my preferences. :) There are also boxes, wall hangings, pendants and lots more. Types of wood, finishing and adding color are also covered. A great primer.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.
