I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Her Shallow Grave’, the nineth in the Detectives Kane and Alton series and written by D K Hood, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
There are heavy snowfalls in Black Rock Falls and a serial killer is on the loose picking up homeless young women, killing them, freezing their bodies and making sculptures of them before leaving his artwork to be found. With the help of their friends from the FBI, Special Agent and Profiler Jo Wells and Ty Carter, Detectives Jenna Alton and her Deputy David Kane realise that the killer they call the Sculptor is more than likely to be living in Black Rock Falls and someone they pass by every day. Jenna and Kane must identify him quickly before the number of bodies increases.
‘Her Shallow Grave’ is another incredibly exciting addition to the series and one I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading. Meeting up with Jenna and her team at the Black Rock Falls police department is like being reunited with old friends and together with the tension, possible suspects and twists and turns, this thriller makes for an action-packed read. It’s had me gripped from the beginning, unable to put my Kindle down until the final chapters, and the dramatic climax is a fitting conclusion to this suspenseful thriller.
This is one of my favourite series at the moment, it never disappoints. In this book, detectives Kane and Alton are enjoying a winter break when they discover body parts displayed in trees. very atmospheric read with excellent character development, plenty suspense and excitement to keep the reader engrossed. I highly recommend reading this series in order, you won't be disappointed. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
Book 9 in the series. I don't know how she does it but this series just gets better and better.
The characters are intriguing and the plot lines are very dark.
I was hooked from the first page and I did not want to put it down.
Just don't start it at bedtime as I only got 3 hours sleep when I did! Totally engrossing.
I recommend this series to every reader I know.
Now we are (unbelievably!) at Book 9 in this series, I feel like I know Jenna Alton and David Kane really well and they, and their team feel like family to me. I love the way they each have each others' backs and also celebrate with each other when there is a happy occasion! They work so well together and I never have any doubt that they will find who they are looking for even when, as in Her Shallow Grave, they have trouble finding some strong leads.
Throughout Her Shallow Grave, the reader is given a great deal of insight into the killer's mind, both through Kane's assessment and the chapters that are written from his point of view. He is clearly a very twisted person and his modus operandi demonstrates this, but this made me root for the team even more.
There are also some chapters where we are shown what is happening to the victims and I loved learning more about them too. It gave me a slightly different perspective to that which I am used to from other novels in the genre.
Her Shallow Grave is set in winter, and the cold, snowy weather really helps to create a tense atmosphere which just keeps on building as it goes along! As we reach the end, the tension is almost unbearable and I was crossing my fingers that everything would be resolved.
I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to see what Hood puts these characters through next!
I received this copy from netgalley. I have not read any from this author. I was able to get in to the book with out reading the rest of the series I am thrilled cause I found a different author to read. she seem's like she could be a favorite of mine. I loved the book cause of the mystery and it was so easy to get in to, cause it was so well written. I liked the plot's and the character's and the cover is eye catching that's part of why I wanted to read the book, I am going to have to get the rest of the series now and read them. I t she writes more in this series.
While having a well earned break at a nearby ski resort Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane discover body parts hanging from a tree. The arms are from two females and have tattoos. When returning to the resort Deputy Kane comes across a woman being dragged into a chalet by two men and intervenes. Unfortunately for him this kicks off an unhealthy attraction in the woman, Kim Strickland, which leads to Jenna being put in danger. Following the discovery of another tattooed body in the town Jenna and Dave call in the help of their friends Jo Wilson and Ty Carter from the FBI. They link the bodies in Black Rock Falls to murders in other states - all have been attributed to a killer dubbed The Sculptor as he likes to pose his victims like art work.
Brilliant read from start to finish with plenty of suspects to keep you guessing. I’ve read all the books in this series and they never disappoint.
Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and D K Hood for the ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
Wow I didn't think this was going to impress me as much as it did. It started for me a bit slow but really picked up a lot which made it so great to read
This was my introduction to D.K. Hood's Jenna Alton and David Kane's Series... I have to say, I am a big fan... and am in the process of reading the preceding books to see how they got to where they are... in the middle of nowhere. Jenna has an amazing heart and conscious for justice. She doesn't give up and keeps on digging (even into David's situation...). This is a fantastic mystery with a very satisfying ending. The author does not give away the murder until the very end, and with all the twists and turns, it keeps the reader guessing (and up way past bedtime).
Author D.K. Hood sure knows how to write an excellent crime thriller. The pace of this story is fast and the storyline flows well. I love how well Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane work together. A repeat appearance by FBI Special Agent Jo Wells and Detective Ty Carter assisting with the crime investigation is a super addition to the storyline.
Her Shallow Grave by D.K. Hood is the ninth book in her Detectives Kane and Alston series. Black Rock Falls, Montana gets more than its fair share of crazy killers. The twists and turns and surprises along the way make this an edge-of-your-seat read that's hard to put down until the end.
Detectives, Jenna and Kane return in this Black Rock Falls series where yet another killer has claimed territory.
When a day of skiing turns up a gruesome murder scene, Jenna and Kane are thrown into a detective catch-the-killer-nightmare. This time, the killer displays various dismembered body parts of the different dead bodies as frozen abstract artwork—with a trademark garish, petrified smile on the victim’s face.
The victims are women with similar traits—usually runaways, homeless, tattooed, a certain height, and hair color. Very little evidence and even fewer clues, Jenna and Kane are racing against time to prevent the Sculptor’s next murder.
With fast-paced action, incredibly accurate and detailed criminal investigative material, and a gore-thirsty maniacal murderer, D.K. Hood delivers a thrilling murder-mystery.
I could hardly read this; it was disturbing. Yet, I could not put it down. I was fixated.
An outstanding and riveting read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for D.K. Hood’s read of, Her Shallow Grave.
Opinions expressed in my reviews are my own.
I have to admit that you could not get me to live in Black Rock Falls for all the money in the world! It is clearly THE place where all the killers do their best work ;)
Jenna and Dave are back trying to solve a mystery of how these frozen corpses keep on turning up on their patch, with no ID anywhere. Funny thing, all the women who are victims in this latest case could be sisters - there must be a story behind it, right? Inbetween trying to solve this perplexing case, Dave also has to put up with a stalker.
Lots of twists and turns and my heart was in my mouth in the final third of the story. Yikes!!
4.5 stars from me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.
In "Her Shallow Grave", the story of Detective Jenna Alton and her lead detective Kane continues in book number 8 of this series. With plenty of gory details about the killer they refer to as "The Sculptor", this book is guaranteed to appease the reader who loves a good thriller. Dark haired, homeless women with tattoos start showing up dead displayed as works of art, and the writer gets very creative with what happens to the victims. The reader cringes as another woman willingly climbs into the killer's truck.
What I didn't like...I could have done without Kane's crazy stalker, which seems pretty irrelevant to the story. I also lost count of how many chapters basically ended with "Oh no! Black River Falls has another killer, psycho, madman, etc. on their hands, what will we ever do"? You can imagine the look of sheer horror on their faces while the doomsday music plays in the background. Nothing like stating the obvious, right?
It was okay for a first read from this author and I will admit, I didn't figure out which suspect responsible until the very end. I like to be surprised. Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for another book.
Another excellent addition to this series! But a very dangerous town to live in. Yet another serial killer appears on the loose, using the snow to hide his identity and his deeds!
This killer freezes his victims and poses them as art. But the frustrations grow as the media fail to give him appropriate attention. I like the addition from the last book, of the local FBI field office. An interesting extension for the development of the story.
I am eagerly awaiting the next in the series!
Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and the author for an ARC of Her Shallow Grave, the ninth novel in the Kane and Alton series. You just know when it opens with them having some down time it’s all about to go wrong, and when a frozen, dismembered body is found hanging from a tree in a remote area of town Black Rock Falls will soon be living up to its serial murder capital name again!
But not ‘just’ that. Early on Jenna faces her own danger and you are brought on a breakneck ride through treacherous conditions and you’re thinking hang on here what’s going on, I’m not 50% through yet, she can’t die- or can she!? Back to serial murder city and as the bodies mount up, there are daring escapes, and an intense cold so vividly portrayed you can feel it. All this and the sub plot and characters you’ve come to know and love developing nicely in the background. ‘Absolutely gripping‘ doesn’t come close!
Her Shallow Grave... what a title for a book. I will admit I picked this novel because of its name. I was completely unfamiliar with the Detectives Kane and Alton series -how have I managed to not hear about them before? If this book is anything to go by, I will be reading the previous eight installments. I don't think you need to be familiar with the series to enjoy this book as a standalone novel but I am sure it will help with the back story.
This novel is absolutely terrifying, it is a roller coaster of emotions and none of them is pleasant! We have a serial killer who likes to leave his trophies around town (seriously Black Rock Falls residents, what are you doing leaving your houses?), kidnappings, a stalker, and some very creepy moments from the victim's point of view. Ouch!
Absolutely brilliant.
Disclosure: I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for my advanced reader copy of the book. This is my honest review.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Her Shallow Grave, the ninth novel to feature Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane of the Black Rock Falls, Montana Sheriff’s Office.
When a frozen, dismembered body is found hanging from a tree in a remote area of town Alton and Kane suspect trouble in the form of another killer and this fear is confirmed when more bodies are found. Identifying the dead women is not easy and they start to believe that the killer is preying on the homeless.
I enjoyed Her Shallow Grave which is an action packed, tense read with a well concealed perpetrator. The novel is told from various points of view so not just Alton and Kane but the unnamed perpetrator and his captives. This latter I found a bit tedious, another everyday tale of perverted psyches and sadism, although the author puts her own spin on it with a couple of unusual details. I much preferred the hunt which is exciting as they close in and frustrating as they work their way to a solution. It should be noted that the killer is not subtle in his disposal methods so, while not gratuitous, this is not a novel for the faint hearted.
For readers unfamiliar with the series Alton and Kane are pseudonyms as they are former federal agents now in the witness protection program, along with forensics specialist Shane Wolfe. I bet nobody believed when they tucked them away in Black Rock Falls that it would become serial killer central.
Her Shallow Grave is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
It's winter in Montana and shaping up to be the worst in a long time. With heavy snowfalls forecast almost daily the snow plough driving past their gate is about the only thing making life easier for Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane. Bodies, and parts of bodies, frozen in the ice cold climate, are being displayed for the world to see, add to that the very persistent stalker Kane has got himself and it's another normal week in the lives of law enforcement in Black Rock Falls!
After looking closely at the crime scenes and speaking with the local FBI field office, Jenna has no doubt a notorious serial killer is leaving his works of art in her jurisdiction. The Sculptor is believed to have killed multiple times but no one has any idea who he is or where his victims come from. Sheriff Alton and Deputy Kane, along with ME Shane Wolfe, know the buck has to stop with them, if only they can get one step ahead of their quarry.
Once again D K Hood has written an original blindingly brilliant book. There is no let up anywhere and things which would be endings in other stories are part of the run up to a denouement which had me totally hooked. This author gets better and better, the plots ever more complex and chilling while the main characters are now old friends with the reader becoming invested in their failings and suffering as well as their successes. There was no hint of anything drawing to a close and so I will await the next instalment as impatiently as I did this one.
Although I have bought my own copy I was able to read an advanced version of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys this series or wants first class storytelling. Although I would also recommend buying the whole set there is enough backstory to be able to start right here. This is a brilliant series which will keep you gripped.
Again another excellent book from D K Hood. I love all the characters in the Alton and Kane series. As always there are plenty of twists and turns with the story keeping me on the edge of my seat and needing to read just one more chapter.
Her Shallow Grave by D.K. Hood is an excellent example of a great crime thriller. This is my first time reading this author and I knew instantly I was going to have to read all the others; I immediately purchased book 1 with Detectives Kane and Alton. I love this book and look forward to learning more about these characters. Great book - highly recommend!
Absolutely brilliant addition to this series of books. D K Hood literally draws you into the pages. Her writing is so vivid and descriptive, you can virtually smell that fresh pine air !!! This latest book is as fast paced as the others in the series and each time you pick up a new story, it is like meeting up with old friends. I have no hesitation in recommending this book and the series. 5 stars all the way.
