Fast paced, heart pounding and unputdownable
This is the second book in the Paige Northwood series
A school for the deaf takes an overnight trip, the next morning a boy is missing and a teacher is dead. The police employ Paige Northwood, a British Sign Language interpreter, to help with investigations. The clock is ticking down as hopes of finding the boy alive are dwindling. EVERYONE is a suspect.
I could not put this book down. I literally inhaled it! This is my favourite book so far of 2020! Every chapter there was a cliff hanger, every cliff hanger I was suspecting someone different! If there was a book version of 20 cups of coffee, this is it! It kept me up wondering what was next!
The only complaint I have is that the third book in the series isnt already here!
This book is released on the 12th of November! And is currently priced at £2.99 on Kindle!
Thank you to @netgalley and @avon_books for my ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I thought the setting was interesting - an interpreter for the deaf working on a murder investigation at a school for the deaf - but it just felt average. I found most of the characters to be irritating. However, I liked the misdirection about the murderer. I didn't guess who it was, but it was not enough to save it for me.
Silent Night is the second book in the series by Nell Pattison. I really liked the first book and this one did not disappoint either. Paige is a sign language interpreter who is once again called on to translate for the police. A group of deaf teenagers go on a trip in the winter. The next morning one of them is missing. The teacher who went out to find him is found murdered. Lots of twists and turns as well as typical teenagers keeping secrets. Who is the killer? Who else is in danger? Read it and find out!
Thanks to netgalley and Avon Books UK for the arc
This is the second book in the series, by this author, with Paige Northwood. I haven't read the first book, but after several mini references to that case, I know I will be going to read it next!
The story follows the murder of a staff member from a school for deaf children, the shock of a missing student, and the exploration of many misdeeds and untruths from people who attend the school.
What a whirlwind of twists and turns! At every step I was questioning a different character, who could it be?
The ending was a surprise, but not unwelcome! I love a book that can keep me guessing right to the very end, but still tie up all the little facts we seen throughout the book.
The style of writing is clear, concise and clever. I enjoyed it.
Im looking forward to the 3rd installment in Paige's forays with the law enforcement.
Silent Night is the story of five teenagers from a school for the deaf who are on an overnight trip in the woods. One of the students disappears, as does a teacher who goes to look for him. This is the second in a series, and it’s a good, fast paced whodunnit that will keep you guessing right to the end. Interesting premise, as the story is told through a sign language interpreter who works with the police. It’s very well done, and I’m definitely going to go back and read the first book. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through @NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I really liked this book. It kept my attention and I had to find out what happened. I would highly recommend this book.
A wintry school trip heads for disaster when the headteacher turns up dead and a teenage boy is missing, did he kill his teacher or has something sinister happened to him?
Paige Northwood, a freelance British Sign Language interpreter is called out by DS Singh to help with this case, the school trip was organised by the local school for deaf children and the boy who went missing, Leon, is a resident. His friends don’t seem to be telling Paige and the police everything, she gets the impression that they are hiding something.
Paige is also horrified to find out that her ex Mike now works at the school, his presence unsettles her and it is clear that he definitely has some unfinished business with her.
It soon becomes clear that the teens and the teachers are closing ranks, they seem to wanting to save their own skins rather than find out the fate of Leon. As Paige and DS Singh dig deeper the extent of the deception becomes clear.
Now the one thing I did not realise when I requested this book was the fact it was the second in a series, quite frankly I happily read this as a standalone novel but I definitely will go back and read the first. The setting is perfect with plenty of snow thrown in to the mix to add a little more claustrophobia to the story.
I think for a murder mystery fan this will tick all the boxes.
Thanks to Net Galley for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to Netgalley and Avon Books UK for the arc of Silent Night by Nell Pattison.
4 star read for me- this was a great read, i read within 1 day, had me page turning right to the end, i loved it, well written as well.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
I have to start off by saying that this book is second in a series although I have read it as a stand-alone and has no difficulty in following the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that it is set in a kind of locked-room environment and I loved the descriptions and the eerie environment that made the read more intriguing.
There were great twists in the plot and mystery that I didn’t see coming which I really enjoyed as well.
It was a bit slow to start with and I had a bit of difficulty getting into it at the beginning but I was invested to find out what happened and I’m glad I kept reading.
I did not particularly loved Paige and found her behaviour a bit dubious. Some of her past is slowly revealed and I am curious to know more even though I don’t know if I will ever love the character. The students and teachers were all really mysterious and interesting characters and I was a bit shocked with the way the plot ended.
Overall, a great plot with good twists and turns and with a great setting. I am curious to read the first and future books!.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Avon Books UK for this advanced digital copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
A school for the deaf and a headteacher found dead. Silent Night keeps you hungry for more.
Before beginning to review, there’s an aspect of this book I would like to touch upon. I’ve never read a book before that has a deaf character, let alone so many people with their own unique lives and identities.
This was very refreshing and I felt privileged that the author Nell took the time to teach us, the readers, about the wrong and right ways to support someone who is hard of hearing.
A lot of the book is written in italics which expresses the use of BSL being used. Whilst of course, at its core this book is a thriller, I greatly appreciated the way this book was written and I think a lot of readers would feel the same way.
From the word go I found myself suspicious of everyone! The awful ex, missing student, anyone who is slightly relevant to the story.
This is the second book in a series however, it can definitely be read standalone. It often feels like this book was written to be more about the main character than the murders though, which I have no problem with but slightly mars the overall feel.
An encapsulating read that is definitely worth picking up if you prefer your Christmas cosy vibes to be more severe and thrilling.
This is the second novel in the Paige Northwood series, and I definitely liked the first one more. The writing wasn’t as good as the previous book, and I found that Paige was more stupid this time around too. She would keep important things to herself and place herself in situations she shouldn’t. I also felt that it had such a flat and underwhelming ending. I do like DS Singh. He’s probably my favourite character. And the culprit was harder to determine this time. I wasn’t able to predict who the killer was. The pace was also good and there weren’t any lulls in the story, but in the end the plot just seemed too complicated.

Silent Night by @writernell
Publication date - 12th November 2020.
Thank you to @avon_books and @netgalley for this advanced readers copy, in exchange for an honest review.
I was so excited to see that there was a follow up to ‘The Silent house’.
I LOVED this book, I find Paige Northwood’s world so interesting and loved being back in it. I enjoy seeing how she interacted with both the students and the work she completed with the police. There was so many twists, it held my interest throughout.
I liked that there were mentions of the first case that Singh and Northwood worked on together. Sometimes in a series, the past can be forgotten. However can Max please go away 😂, so these characters can get together?! So much chemistry 💕💕
I would highly recommend this book, but do suggest reading the first in the series, so you can really get to know the characters.
This is an interesting enjoyable read. I enjoyed finding out more about Paige who is an intriguing character. Reading about the school was interesting. There are some good twists in the plot and a few unlikeable characters.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
Nell Pattinson is a very promising and uprising author who has another novel I cannot wait to read. If it is anything like this one, I will be thrilled. A school for the deaf has taken some children on an overnight camping trip in the winter. The next morning young Leon is missing and the teacher has been found dead. We are then introduced to Paige who is an interpreter with the police department as well as a detective. She does her job of interviewing everyone there and while they all have an alibi, she knows the killer is near and she needs to stop him/her from killing again but can she? This is based on a true story and that compelled me to really want to read it. Truly an awesome read that kept me up wanting more and in reality did not see the ending coming. The author does an exceptional job with research yet it does not feel as though you are reading a story based on such. This is a fast paced read that will keep you entertained until you close the last chapter.
Thank you to netgalley as well as the author/publisher for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
Five teenagers from a school for the deaf are taken on a camping trip to a wooded area. The next morning, one of the teens is missing - Leon, and a search begins. It has snowed and is bitterly cold, and sign language interpreter Paige, has been brought in to assist . Then a body is discovered, but it is not Leon, it is one of the teachers who went out to look for him. Suddenly the remaining kids and the teachers all become suspects and the search for the missing boy and the search for the killer intensifies. All seem to have alibis, but they also have secrets.
I thank the publisher, author and Netgalley for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I loved silent house and i loved this one.
I don't know what it is but you get drawn in to the characters and the story. I thought i had guessed this so many times during the book. I was wrong on so so so many levels.
I loves it. I cant wait for more
An overnight school field trip goes horribly wrong when a student goes missing and the head teacher is found murdered. To make matters more complicated, a snow storm has covered up much of the evidence and the missing student is deaf.
Paige, a BSL interpreter, is called to work with the police again to help bridge the language barrier. But, with her abusive ex-boyfriend working at the school and the students and teachers keeping secrets that could interfere with the investigation, Paige is quick to realize that this won't be a cut and dry case.
This was the second book in the Silent series. I have not read the first book and thought it read well as a standalone novel. The novel centers around Paige and her interpreting for the police in their investigation. Paige is a brave and curious (though naive) woman who cares deeply about the cases she works on, so much so, that she often oversteps and injects herself into the investigation. It's clear that this happened in the prior book and Paige has yet to learn her lesson.
I really enjoyed the BSL aspect of the novel and learning more about the deaf community. This is a severely underrepresented population in literature and I thought the author was well educated on the topic.
Though Paige was generally a likable character, I did find myself getting frustrated by her refusal to listen to authority and her wishy-washy-ness surrounding the (several) love interests. She often put herself in dangerous situations that greatly compromised the integrity of the investigation. She also seemed a little loose with sharing information with her sister and because of the trouble it sounds like she had gotten into in the past with similar behaviors, it seemed surprising to me that she was put in such a trusted position.
The students and the teachers at the school were also frustrating characters. They constantly lied, withheld information, and were generally insubordinate.
I generally love police procedurals but this one didn't quite hit the mark for me. I definitely recommend this novel to anyone who loves a fast-paced mystery with unreliable characters, lots of twists and turns, and a strong lead character back and side story.
Thank you to Avon and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this novel.
Quite a good book,
I didn’t like it quite as much as her debut novel, however it was quite nice to find out what main character Paige Northwood is up to :)
I give it 8/10
I really wanted to love this book, the premise was uniquely interesting as was the plot. And while I enjoyed some aspects, others fell a little short. The theme of BSL and Deafness was interesting and done well, I believe. It added an element to the story that was different from other mysteries I've read and it was what I enjoyed most. The writing was a lot of telling and not a lot of showing, there were several instances where information was dumped on us in massive paragraphs that I felt could have been revealed a little better. I also didn't feel too connected to any of the characters, apart from maybe Leon. However, in saying that, it was a quick, fun read and the mystery was compelling enough to keep me interested until the end.
This is my second book by Nell Pattison. I love the way she writes, her stories are so descriptive. I also appreciate that she includes deaf and hard of hearing characters in her books. I am deaf myself and it is so refreshing to read about people who are like me. Sign language interpreter Paige Northwood was in the first book, The Silent House, as well but this is a complete stand alone.
I enjoyed getting to know each of the characters along with the backstory as I tried to guess the identity of the murderer, paying attention to all the clues along the way. This alone made the book difficult to put down and drew me right into the story. The author reveals just enough information about each character to make you wonder about their true motivations and their reasons for coming to the sleep away. The story was, however, an eerie, tension-filled and suspenseful story that was fully immersive as we put ourselves in the shoes of everyone involved. It wasn’t at all graphic or gory though — just a fun though unsettling whodunit.
So I absolutely loved this book. I mean, how can you not love a murder mystery that takes place in the woods in the midst of a storm? I’m so glad that I went into this knowing very little about it and there were plenty of twists and surprises to keep me turning the page. The author does an excellent job at throwing you off track, and I was unable to correctly guess who the killer was. Which is good — I hate when I guess the ending when I’m only part way through a story. All in all a clever, atmospheric and fun Whodunit with vivid, relatable characters.
