I really wish this book had more originality, because when reading Star Spark all i could think about was that it reminded me of so many other books.
Ugh. I feel like was just like soooo many others and not very original. I wish there was more originality in this.
I’m not sure what this book wanted to be? It set up lots of different hooks and elements and jumped around between them, didn’t really give us a full understanding of the world, and honestly I felt the plot was too quick and felt too convenient. The romance lacked chemistry, and the main character lacked agency.
When reading the blurb and looking at the cover the book looks so good! But i felt bored and confused most of the time. The story seemed to hook itself onto something, then suddenly another thing and jumped from hook to hook, wich made me confused and Dess`s parts were boring and i know it was building up to the two main characters to meet but it felt like it didn`t need to be there, we could have been introdused to him when she arrived there and it would have been fine. But i just wasn`t interested, and when the hooks in the story came and went it felt rushed and unfinished . i just did not feel.. the build up .. nor the chemistry between the characters.
Saytera and her friends were naive and immature but they were a caring bunch. They desired their freedom but didn’t realize it could come at a price. Now, they were in a race against time, trying to stop a war, one that could annihilate their loved ones and their homes. It was quite an interesting and entertaining read.
Thank you netgalley for providing me this ARC.
i really enjoyed this book, though it turns
confuse sometimes. the writing is heartfull, but i had struglles to care about the main character at first. The world could be more explored. Rate 3,o.
This was a nice, quick read for me. It wasn’t something that made me think too hard nor was it something that I invested too much emotion in. I enjoyed the plot and the characters and I would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to curl up read something nice and light.
Thank you Netgalley for the advanced ebook copy in return for an honest review.
It is a sad day when I can't give a book 5stars.. I was really looking forward to reading this and anticipated that I would love it. The cover is magnificent. The synopsis was intriguing.
Unfortunately, I couldn't get into it. The setting was confusing. What I understood is that this doesnt take place on earth, living on moons is mentioned but nothing is explained, there is simply not enough world building.
The book is slow paced, 3 chapters in and im still confused and have no clue what is going on.
The writing style is awkward and often confusing.
That being said I dont think it is a bad book, it just wasn't for me.
3,5 stars. I didn't know what to expect when I started reading this book.
As far as I can see Day Leitao is a new writer — and the book cover looked like many other YA fantasy romances. But there were some very pleasant surprises throughout. For one, Leitao's writing is thoughtful and evocative — without falling into the dreaded "purple prose" territory. And you can tell she has put great care into creating this world. There are layers and details we are not explicitly shown; there is a delicacy with which the exposition is handled. We are, indeed, taken on a journey.
It's just that the journey is a bit slower and a bit more convoluted than one would expect or hope.
The two protagonists' circumstances change one too many times; right when you're ready for the book to "get started" and the world around them to solidify, their settings change again. This adds to the lush world-building, for sure — but unfortunately it detracts from the plot and disorients the reader.
On the romance aspect: these two take their sweet time to meet. Again, this is both good and bad. We do get to know them a bit better separately and learn what makes them tick (Dess, mostly, as in my opinion he's a much more well-rounded character than Saytera who mostly comes off as a clueless child). But when they do meet they feel this cosmic connection and then... nothing really happens and they go back to their lives, kissing other people? It should be clear by now that this book isn't progressing the way we'd expect it to.
I don't want to say more because I don't want to spoil the ending for anyone. Just that amidst all this back and forth, Leitao manages to deliver some beautiful, poignant phrases about the interconnectedness of human experience and nature. Although very far from your typical "sci-fi romance", Star Spark manages to tug into something deep inside. It has heart. And for that, I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind a slow pace and a bit of wandering around aimlessly. After all, we're all made from the same starfire — so in a sense, we're already where we need to be.
P.S. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for offering me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed reading this book, the characters were great and I enjoyed the plot of the book. The plot had exactly what I was looking for in a scifi novel and a young adult book.
I have received an e-book of this book from Netgalley in exchange for a honest review. All opinions and thoughts are mine.
Actual rating: 4.75 (I debated this for awhile I chose to round my rating up to 5 stars)

-Synopsis-
Star Spark Captured my attention from the moment I read the description and started the first chapter. This book got me out of a week slump (which I’m grateful for). I thought this was a great standalone. I liked how this story started and gave lots of details and information and got my full attention. This is a good Sci-fi book to pick up when you need a good read.
“When two people are close, it’s like if there was an invisible line between them.”
-Setting-
I enjoyed the world building in Star Spark. You can tell the amount of effort put into creating this world and I appreciate it. Everything was also well described and easy fo understand for me. I loved how different Dess and Saytera’s worlds were from each other it was interesting to learn their ways. There was some missing information for example who are the terens? I am pretty sure they are groups of people but I feel as there are many unanswered questions.
“Perhaps he was going insane. Perhaps it was just that he missed her.”
-Writing-
Star Spark was a well written book. I feel as though it could be just a little better. The reason for 4.75 as my rating, is due to the writing. There was just some awkwardness that I got when reading. Despite that Star Spark had a nice easy pace. It made me lose some sleep (which is a good thing). This felt a little like insta love. I wish there were more moments with Dess and Saytera. I liked that we got perspectives of Dess and Saytera. The book was overall, (writing wise) written well.
“One great ocean. One fire. One light. Through it all, she should be able to reach him.”
-Characters-
I liked the characters in this book. There were quite a lot which was confusing for me to keep track at first. I liked Saytera’s character there was something about her I just admired. I loved Dess! He was such a good character in my opinion. I just adored Marcus and his relationship with Dess. I do feel as though I needed more time with other characters to learn more about them.
-Plot-
This was a very interesting plot for me. I don’t usually read sci-fi but I think this was a good representation. I loved how the plot evolved together. There were so many things happening and I loved that it kept me wondering at night.
-Conclusion-
This was a great read for me and I’m glad I read it. Even though it is a standalone I feel the need for more. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a good read, or just recommend this book in general. This is one of those books I will most likely re read soon. So if your looking for; Romance+ Adventure+ Sci-fi+ Lovable characters this book is for you!
