Point of Danger by Irene Hannon – Mixed Emotions

Irene Hannon is one of my favorite writers and that’s why I was excited to read her newest book Point of Danger.

Conservative radio talk show host Eve Reilly is used to getting hate mail, but one evening she encounters something a whole lot scarier, a bomb package on her doorstep. Eve calls 911 and while she waits for the police to arrive, she tries to make sure that her elderly neighbor Oliva gets to safety as well as her neighbor’s dog that she’s pet sitting. Rookie detective Brent Lange will be the officer investigating the case and trying to find out who hates Eve enough to want her dead.

This book has an interesting premise and some likable characters, but it also has some issues that take away or detract from the storyline.

What worked in this novel? I liked detective Brent Lange and I cared about the character. He seemed like a stand-up guy, loyal and dependable, who cared about people. I liked Eve’s sisters Grace and Cate, they seemed to genuinely care about their sister and were there for her during this crisis. I kind of, sort of liked Eve. I appreciated that Eve saw qualities in Brent that were admirable and that she tried to communicate with him in an effective way to draw him out. I rather liked the story told from different characters’ points of view, but with so many characters it got a bit much.

What didn’t work? There were a lot of characters in this book and too many potential suspects. There was Eve’s boss Doug and Carolyn a competitor who wanted Eve’s job. There was Eve’s assistant Meg Jackson and her husband Steve. Eve’s former boyfriend was a suspect. There’s a suspect that is not identified until later in the book and then there’s the brain behind the operation that is way out of left field. That one kind of stretched the imagination and that aspect of the storyline could have been better developed.

While the word Christian wasn’t specifically used to describe Eve, there were references to Eve going to church and praying. But there was not a lot in Eve’s behavior or words that would lead me to believe that she was a Christian. Some of the early scenes between Eve and Brent focused on their physical attraction, which seems particularly odd considering that she just had a bomb scare. I don’t think that Eve’s character was well developed, in part because the focus was on her words and actions. The character was a local conservative talk show host, not national, and that’s why it seemed odd that this local gal would be the target of a hate group. The relationship between Meg and her husband Steve went into some details that I found not appropriate in a book by a Christian author and publisher, as was the relationship between Doug and Carolyn.

There were some aspects of the Christian faith developed in Brent, but not so much with the other characters or storyline. That’s something I would have like to have seen focused on with the characters. One thing stood out towards the end of the novel, Eve’s sister Cate said, “Right or wrong, I’m not wasting any prayers for recovery on his behalf.” Really? This is not a Christian book, but it’s written by an author who is a Christian and published by Revell which publishes books by Christian authors. Should books published under a Christian banner be held to a different or higher standard? I think they should.

I like politics so that aspect of the book was interesting to me. But I thought adding the Antifa aspect in this story was probably not the best. The group was cleaned up compared to what people have seen on the news for the last few months. I found it was naive at best when they were described as using intimidation, carrying signs that said, “Down with Government Oppression”, and using smoke cartridges to emit smoke without causing harm.

I would like to thank Revell Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of Point of Danger by Irene Hannon. I was under no obligation to give a favorable review.

I loved the suspense in finding out what was going to happen and how they would be able to sort it all out. Eve is no stranger to controversy but now it seems that her mouth has gotten her into hot water. She finds herself the target of someone and it is up to Brent to find out who. In the course of sorting everything out, Brent soon finds himself caring for her and her ways of standing up for all she believes in. Will he be able to find out what is really going on before it is too late.

I received a copy of the book to read, the review is mine.

Another fantastic read from Irene Hannon. I wish she only wrote romantic suspense so we could get more of these great stories from her.
Someone is out to get Eve Reilly, a gutsy on-air personality who seems to have made more than her fair share of enemies. Bret Lange is doing his best to protect her, but it seems like someone is always one step ahead.
This book was a slow burn of both romance and suspense. A perfect balance of romance and suspense, not favoring either, Hannon created a well-crafted page turner without any of the anxiety or frustration from your typical suspense and/or romance novel. I found myself reading for the love of the characters and the story, not for what felt like a quicker path to the resolution. I think that points to how gifted Hannon is at her craft, and how much time she takes in doing it well. I cannot wait for the next book in this series. Thank you for another enticing journey to look forward to.

Famous radio talk show host Eve Reilly is accustomed to feed back from her listeners about her opinions and interviews. However, she is not used to finding a box left at her front door that appeared to be holding a bomb. Detective Brent Lange is assigned to the case and as other troubling things occurred, an attraction developed. One that neither had expected or anticipated. It quickly becomes obvious Eve's life is in danger. Can Brent protect her?
Eve Reilly has definite opinions about most everything and she is strong as well as intuitive. She wants to pursue a relationship with Brent. Even though Brent isn't looking for a relationship, he is drawn to Eve. He has baggage and it remains to be seen if Eve can break down the wall he has built around his heart.
The author brings to readers a story that has it all. It is well plotted and well paced. Because it is filled with twists and surprises, the narrative keeps readers wondering what comes next. There are moments that reveal terror and chaos. There is romance, too. The secondary characters are an interesting group. Not all are who they present themselves to be.
I found this to be a clever, tense and absorbing story. Highly recommended.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell and NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Point of Danger
By Irene Hannon

4 Stars

A Christian Murder Mystery.

I was hesitant when I first picked up the title. A murder mystery in the Christian genre is often difficult to do well, with the story often coming across as preaching rather than storytelling. Having said that Irene Hannon does tell a story well.

The story follows pot-stirring radio talk show host Eve Reilly, who has an upset listener resorting to threats and violence to stop her broadcasts. Enter police detective Brent Lange as he follows the separate, but unsettling incidents that escalate intensity.

A romantic element between the two complicates the story. Does this add or subtract from the story? I believe that it is unnecessary in a good mystery, however other will enjoy the tension between the characters that the romance brings.

The storyline moves along quickly and engages the reader to the heart stopping climax. A great read that is hard to put down.

I don't tend to like to read books with more than 3 or 4 point of view characters, this one had about 7 and yet I found it didn't feel too much like head-hopping. It added to the suspense as there were several suspects and we could get a glimpse of all of them. Some of the secondary characters had depth to their characters and their storylines and even though some of the characters looked to be going down the wrong path you wanted them to make different decisions before it was too late. I also really enjoyed that the two main characters talked about their relationship in a mostly reasonable way which doesn't happen often in books. This was one of the best books I've read in a while.

The cover of "Point of Danger" was different than most suspense I've seen.

I have fixed feelings about this book. Getting the point of view of SO MANY characters was okay, but the fact that we got in the head of the bad guys was slightly disturbing ... Mostly just one of the bad guys who was a complete and utter jerk to those he felt he was above ... And, that was everybody so, yeah, icky.

May I just say I called it?! I knew it was gonna be who it was... I JUST KNEW IT. I didn't want it to be but I KINDA JUST KNEW!

The romance, I liked, it wasn't too overpowering from the suspense and they both blended together well...

I am REALLY hoping that Cate gets a book, just because I want to know more and I loved seeing the bits of her we got in "Point of Danger"

I appreciate how Irene Hannon took a suspense that could have been normal and turned it into a different book dealing with real things in a real way that left you with a thirst to know more about the subjects covered. I was somewhat shocked by the subjects covered, totally NOT DISagreeing, just kind of shocked that it was in a suspense, but I liked it. Quite a bit.

As always, I look forward to reading another Irene Hannon novel.

Content: The bad guys are jerks and it shows...? Some kissing. Mentions of a miscarriage.

I voluntarily received and reviewed a complimentary e/copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

It's an exciting day when a book by Irene Hannon arrives in my mailbox! I enjoy reading romantic suspense and she has become a reliable source of entertainment in this field. Point of Danger is the beginning of a new series so I was looking forward to meeting the new characters and seeing where the series would take me.

The main characters are radio talk show host Eve Reilly and police detective Brent Lange. The story opens up with a ticking package on Eve's front porch. Is it a bomb? Who would leave a bomb on her front porch?

As the story unfolds it becomes apparent that many people have nefarious motives towards Eve. She's an outspoken, right leaning, political talk show host and there are many that would love to see her silenced.

I loved trying to guess who the ultimate culprit was. I think I changed my mind two or three times before the plot was revealed. And when it was revealed I was pleasantly surprised!

If you like suspense with a bit of romance mixed in, I recommend that you give Point of Danger a try.

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

Um...wow! Whew, what a ride!!
I loved this story, it’s top notch and full of action from the beginning to the end.
Lots of twists and turns and surprises!
Absolutely fascinating!
I loved Eve Reilly and getting to know her.
Eve is rather a high profile person. She's a host on a radio show, and freely shares her strong conservative opinions on controversial matters. And now, for some reason, someone is after her, perhaps to kill.
Brent Lange is the detective assigned to her case, and it is evident almost right away that there are sparks between them.
Eve also has two sisters that make appearances here and there, and I have high hopes that Cate and Grace will have their own stories.
Well written mystery and suspense, it kept me guessing until the last few pages!

Be silent ... or be silenced.

Eve Reilly, a call-in radio show host, has a strong conservative stand which accounts for her fabulous numbers in the polls. People love to be able to give their opinions without worrying about repercussions - after all, it’s a radio show, so you can be at least a little anonymous. However, her outspokenness appears to have created an avenue for some to spout hate. But how far are they willing to go?

The author has done a fabulous job of creating more twists than one can possibly figure out, certainly the mark of an incredible story! The threats become more frequent, the possible perpetrator list grows and Detective Brent Lange still has no leads that can be substantiated. Will this culminate in Eve being injured or even killed? If this is book 1 in the Triple Threat series, you certainly don’t want to miss the next one!

I loved how Eve stood strong in her convictions through it all, giving strength to those around her, even though she was the intended victim. As the reader, I have to wonder if I would have the courage to stand up for myself and what I believe in.....

What a wonderful story! The suspense, the romance, the deep conversations, AH, loved it.
Eve and Brent had that perfect mixture of instant attraction but with Brent's past hurts forcing him to hold relationships at arm's length. Eve's personality and the way she knew when to push and when to back off and let Brent work through things on his own really sold me on this story. Eve's tough but not unfeeling and Brent has a bit of the alpha male in him but knows Eve won't put up with high-handedness. They were two puzzle pieces, perfectly matched.
The suspense was a little on the milder side, but it fit in the story well and did not make me feel as though I was missing out. And those final chapters...whew! Excellent buildup of drama.
Irene Hannon has a way of writing inspirational messages into her stories that are subtle yet impossible to miss. It's more than a character offering a prayer every now and then, it's a learning, an experience, as the characters grow in their faith.
Can't wait to read the next book in the series.

itle: Point of Danger
Author: Irene Hannon

Ch: 27 plus epilogue

Pg: 378

Series: Triple Threat book

Genre: Christian Suspense with a hint of romance

Rating: 4 stars

Publisher: Revell

Irene Hannon has done it again. She's written a Christian Suspense that I couldn't put down, but also didn't want it to end. Point of Danger is the first book the Triple Threat series.

When Eve Reilly starts receiving threats because of her radio show Police detective Brent Lange will do his best to protect her.

Irene Hannon has been one of go to authors for Christian Suspense since I discovered her writing after being introduce to Christian Suspense as a genre by author Dee Henderson. What keeps me coming back to Irene's books is the balance that she gives to the suspense and the romance. With her books the suspense is the main focus with the romance subtly woven through the story. Which is how I tend to like my suspense and Point of Danger is no different. I look forward to the next book in the series as well as any more suspense from Irene Hannon.

I love that this mystery had so much going on with it! I could of done without some of all the focus on the romance side of things. Overall though, I loved this book and look forward to seeing where the series goes!

This book will keep you guessing! Conservative talk show host, Eve Riley, is receiving threats. It seems someone wants to shut her up, but who? While she has a huge fan base, there are those who do not appreciate her views which she is very vocal and passionate about.
She finds a box at her front door with a wire sticking out. Upon hearing a ticking sound, she calls the police, while rushing to her neighbor's house to put the little dog she's watching while the neighbor is away, in a safe place. That's the kind of person Eve is.
Detective Brent Lange is assigned to Eve's case. She has more threats. She and Detective Brent become close, but Brent has baggage regarding relationships. Can he overcome these? Can he solve the crimes against Eve and keep her safe?
Face paced story that was hard to put down.

Eve is a radio host for a show that discusses different subjects each day. She opens her door one day and finds a box on her door step ticking. She calls the police and a very interesting detective shows up,Brent, and he falls instantly for Eve. The police try to find out who is after Eve and why.
This is a christian novel but don't let that throw you off it's still a good mystery.

The dramatic opening hooks the reader in immediately, helped by the very effective spacing/layout. A quick read, although one doesn’t want it to be! The story moves along at a fast pace, & unlike many other books of this type there are genuine surprises woven in. My only caveat was that the romance side tended to come on a bit strong, taking over – is that realistic in such circumstances? If I could give it 4.5 stars, I would...

As a career radio journalist, I was excited to pick up Point of Danger by Irene Hannon. A longtime fan of her work, I was confident I’d enjoy the book vey much, and I wasn’t wrong.

No many novels feature radio stations and I can say Hannon’s depiction of the coffee is spot on. More to the point, the plot kept me guessing until quite near the end, and as an inhaler of romantic suspense, that’s pretty hard to do. I especially liked the character development. Brent Lange is a detective determined to never again worry the woman he loves into desperation. His solution is to remain single. Then in walks controversial talk show host, Eve Reilly.

You see Eve isn’t one to wilt at the first sign of trouble. Even after a series of threats, including to her sisters, she’s still fighting. Can she show Brent she can handle the danger in his career by the way she handles the problems in her own? Will Brent catch the bad guy(s) before Eve is silenced?

With a fast paced and unpredictable plot, plus great secondary characters and thread, this is another excellent read from Irene Hannon.

I’m sure Irene Hannon had no clue when she was writing this that the political climate would be what it is today. It was a good read. Storyline kept you guessing. I enjoyed the relationship between the sisters and of course Eve and Brent.

I’ve read several of Irene Hannon’s series and enjoyed them. This first book in her new series (A Triple Threat) is no exception. The feel of this new series is slightly different from what I expected. Eve Reilly is a talk-show host who receives an ominous threat. Enter the police detective who believes the threat is more serious than she is taking it and is determined to solve the crime and protect Eve with whom he feels an attraction. It has a nice combination of romance and suspense. The tension is nicely paced and keeps you intrigued through the story. The romance seemed a little rushed, but I enjoyed the overall message behind it. I plan on reading the next book in the series.
Thank you to Net Galley and Revell for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
