Ethan is an old spent man who is rapidly dying of cancer. His sister in law suddenly arrives to visit him. They don't have a good relationship. Ever since his brother was murdered years ago they have avoided each other. His sister in law is a brilliant scientist. She has been working on time and quantum physics experiments for years. She wants Ethan to be her human guinea pig and be sent back to before her husband was murdered to see if he can change things. He will die eventually but he will be able to live for a certain period of time after he gets there and try to change things. I'm not going to expand further on the story. That's just the kick off. It is actually a very good story. It sounds bizarre and science fiction-like, but trust me its a very plausible story. I was pleasantly surprised when I got all caught up in it and couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this book. The character studies alone are worth the read. However, it is much more interesting than that.

Buckle up for a roller coaster ride. Wow. Just wow. This is an amazing book. It's a time travel book, but a time travel book unlike any you've read before.
Ethan starts out in present day. He's dying and he's reflecting on his life. But then his sister in law and niece show up and they're here to talk to him about a way he can make his life worth something more. When he agrees to their idea his life will never be the same again.
Ethan goes back in time to prior to his brother getting shot. His mission is to stop that from happening. Can he make it happen? What will he do differently with his life? How will he change the path of the future?
This was an amazing book that I wasn't really sure what to expect. Ethan has pretty much drifted through his life and has not much to show for it except a mediocre career as a surfer and a nasty divorce.
But now, he gets a chance to go back and change not only his life but the lives of those he loves. I loved this book and could not put it down. The medical parts were wonderfully done and I loved the way it was written. Highly recommend that you give this book a read!

"Burden of Proof" is a futuristic type mystery that tugs at each of our hearts. What if we had the opportunity to correct past wrongs? I sympathized with the main character. I found the book a little slow due to the large number of technical explanations incorporated in the main character's care and the legal trial. I was also a little disappointed in the ending - but sometimes it is fun just to imagine my own happy ending!

This is a good read if you are into time travel. For me, it was difficult to engage because I believe we only have one life and will never have the technology to get a second chance or redo past parts of our life.
Ethan is a middle aged and dying of cancer. His sister in law shows up and he chooses to go back in time to save his brother's life in exchange for his own death shortly afterwards.
This is some mystery, such as, who was the murderer the first time around.
Most of the book is well written. In a few places, I struggled with the concept of what was past and present.
Burden of Proof was an interesting read. I had previously read a book by Bunn, so I didn't read the synopsis before starting the book. This story is steeped in the idea that time travel is possible and that it is possible to change the past. Bunn wrote a compelling story, even if some of the story did not seem believable. It was interesting to consider what could be done differently if we had a chance to start over.
Burden of Proof is the first book I have read by this author. Boy, have I been missing out. This is a time travel story. The main character, Ethan has a chance to go back in time to save his brother's life. This story has a bit of sci fi, mystery and legal thriller action. And just a smidgen of romance. I wish the ending had been a bit different, not that it was bad. It just didnt end the way I wanted it to. But all in all a very good read. I think readers who love fast paced action will really enjoy this book.
As a long time fan of Davis Bunn and this book did not disappoint! Ethan is given a chance to go back in time to save his brothers life. He was also given the chance to make different life choices and discovered what a difference your life can turn out when you put others first. I completely devoured the book in a couple of days and highly recommend it!!
Like some reviewers, I didn't know this was a time travel book. If I had known that I probably would have skipped it. Then I found the beginning rather dull but had to write a review, so I pushed through. Boy, I'm glad I did! It turned out to be a pretty good book. I especially enjoyed when it turned into a courtroom drama similar to James Scott Bell.
The basic plot is Ethan has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Looking back on his life, Ethan finds many regrets; failed marriage, no children, and estranged from close family. But above all, he regrets the last time he saw his brother and wasn't there to help him the day he died. His sister-in-law approaches him with a second chance. She has developed the technology to send him back in time and in doing do, help his brother. The catch is Ethan will not survive after going back. Since he already has a death sentence Ethan agrees to the experiment. What he repeats and what he changes, alters the course of many lives as Ethan prepares to make the ultimate sacrifice; laying down his life for his brother.
After getting through a rather slow start, the book's plot picks up speed. I had to finish the book to find out if Ethan succeeded in his quest. The author lost me for a little bit about physics and time travel but it was short lived. It looks like there is a future book and I will definitely be reading it as well.
Like other reviewers have mentioned, I did not realize this was a time travel novel. However, I happen to like time travel so I enjoyed this book very much. I went into this one knowing I absolutely love Davis Bunn, so I’m thankful this book met and exceeded my expectations. If you’re looking to stretch your brain a bit, you’ll love it. I had trouble putting it down. Great character and plot development. Looking forward to the next one in the series. Five stars.
For those readers who love time travel, this is the book for you. Going back in time to relive his life and maybe choose differently is an unique opportunity for Ethan. Will he change the past or will the past change him? Recommended!
Burden of Proof is a very well written book. The author does good job with this time travel plot. I received an advance ebook from the publisher and this is my unbiased review
When I read the info on “Burden of Proof” by Davis Bunn, I missed the sentence that said it was about time travel. Some readers will this pick this book because time travel interests them and others like me will be tempted to bypass because of it. If I had I would missed one of the most interesting books that I have read in a while. I literally looked forward to being to sit down and get back in it.
How many of us would like to go back in our lives to change some wrongs that we have done? Ease some hurts and change some selfish decisions. That is the opportunity that Ethan was given. The chance to save his brother from a evil act and the chance to have a do-over his young wife, Gina.
If you like courtroom drama, romance, family relationships mending, and an intriguing storyline you will enjoy this book.

This was a great read. I don't usually read time travel but really enjoyed it. The characters were very interesting and likeable. The plot was great and I loved the way it made me feel like part of the story. I can't wait to have this book at my library.
A very surprising read from Davis Bunn. I have read all of Bunn's books and have very much enjoyed almost all of them. This was classic Bunn with the legal aspects but a new foray into time travel. Somehow, he made it all work. I did think that the ending was a bit abrupt but on the other hand, it went well with the storyline.
Ethan Barrett has accepted his life ending in a short time, but suffers more from regrets from his past. He is unexpectedly given an opportunity to change things and redo part of his life. He also gains the chance to save his brother.
I read every David Bunn book I can get because they are interesting and imaginative. This one was no different. The characters are are easy to picture and the plot is fast-paced. There is just the right balance of action and suspense to make it hard to stop reading.
As the story moves along, Ethan not only learns what he got wrong the first time around, but shows others that there is more to life than they first thought.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
A strange story, I wasn't convinced I'd enjoy but kept going. There were some things I didn't agree with, but on the whole it was an engaging read.
Bunn does it again. A story of intrigue, mystery, and redemption. Thrilling and suspenseful until the end weaved with relationships and forgiveness.
