This collection of Agatha Christie stories is perfect to cozy up with on a cold winter night. I loved the collection and the mix of well known, recognizable protagonists and some of her lesser known stories. The collection felt cohesive and was a great vibe for a long winter's night. Being stuck inside when it is dark longer, the world blanketed in snow and cold, a little mystery is always in the air. This book is exactly what I wanted for a cozy evening in, wrapped in warm and cuddly blankets in front of a fire.
This was such a fun collection of Christie's short stories, all centered around the winter months! I love that this collection includes stories featuring her most famous detectives, while also highlighting stories that I might not have picked up or heard about otherwise. This is a fantastic collection to pick up in December or January to read by the fire!
I read about half of the stories in this collection via the audiobook on hoopla or as a hybrid with the physical book. I enjoyed the stories I read with Marple and Poirot. I am not as familiar with Christie’s other semi- frequent protagonists, so I do not believe I can judge theirs’ as well. I can see myself reading or re-reading some of the stories over the course of this year. If I do, I will include an addendum.
Thanks to William Morrow and NetGalley for the e-galley. My ratings and reviews are my own.
This was such a great collection of Agatha Christie short stories! I love how there has been a collection for almost every season coming out. All the stories in this collection gave the cozy wintery feel that I love in mysteries. Definitely one of the best books to read while waiting for a snow storm to blow over!
Midwinter Murder: Fireside Tales from the Queen of Mystery is a collection of twelve wintry short stories by Agatha Christie. While almost all of the stories were engaging, my favorite one was certainly Three Blind Mice. Reminiscent of her famed And Then There Were None, Christie employs the use of a children’s nursery rhyme to weave an intricate closed circle mystery filled with murder and suspense.
Other stories in this collection include:
- The Chocolate Box
- A Christmas Tragedy
- The Coming of Mr Quin
- The Clergyman's Daughter/Red House
- The Plymouth Express
- Problem at Pollensa Bay
- Sanctuary
- The Mystery of Hunter's Lodge
- The World's End
- The Manhood of Edward Robinson
- Christmas Adventure
While a few of the mysteries were not as intriguing as some of the others, I generally found the collection to be a cozy read for not just winter but any season.
Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins Publishers/William Morrow for providing me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I love all things Agatha! This one was a great compilation of some of wintery reads. I read this one close to Christmas and it was perfect to curl up with. Overall I really enjoyed these mysteries!
Midwinter Murder is a collection of Agatha Christie stories, all loosely based around winter or Christmas. I have read a few Agatha Christie books in the past, but I had no idea she wrote so many short stories as well.
The best word I can use to describe this book is cozy. While there are definitely creepy mystery elements throughout, the feeling this conjures, of sitting by the fireside on snowy night with a mystery solved, is priceless. There are also appearances by Christie’s beloved protagonists throughout, like Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.
The stories do get a tad repetitive after a while, partially just due to the inherent structure of a mystery story. The issue could be remedied by spreading out the reading process, instead of reading them all in one go.
I personally think this collection will appeal most to those who are already Christie fans and looking to supplement her novels with these winter-themed stories. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this over the holiday period, and recommend it to fans of cozy mysteries.
This is the perfect sized collection for Christie fans. Includes some hits and well known characters, along with stand alone tales. Each one is (thankfully) winter themed! I've encountered so many themed anthologies that seem to make exceptions for stories and that isn't OK in my book.
This collection of twelve previously released short stories by the queen of mystery, Mrs. Agatha Christie, is a great mix of plot lines and characters. While the short stories don't give the same opportunity for character development, it's great to visit some of Mrs. Christie's most well-known detectives. From Poirot and Marple to Tommy and Tuppence, Mr. Quin, and Parker Pyne, these stories felt like sitting down with a good friend for a quick catch-up. I had actually never read any of the stories in this collection, so all were new for me.
This collection is marketed perfectly - each story can be enjoyed in thirty minutes or less, hot cocoa and a hot fire are optional.
Celebrate Christmas, Yule, and Winter with this eclectic collection of 13 short stories from Agatha Christie, long-acknowledged the "Mistress of Mystery." Gems of Poirot and Miss Marple appear, along with others. Read a morsel a day, or read consecutively, and realize once again why Mrs. Christie owns her title.
This mystery collection pairs well with: A chilly December night, a cup of tea, a blanket, and a fireplace.
It’s tough to go wrong with Agatha Christie—particularly the author’s short stories—which give us all the atmosphere and delightful drawing room mystery vibes without as much of the obfuscating filler that at times plagues her novels.
As with all story collections, the quality varies from tale to tale, but the big takeaway from Midwinter Murders is more about the overall feel and experience of reading it than assigning specific criticism to any one individual story.
Christie’s ability to create atmosphere shines throughout this collection. Even if you don’t love the mystery, the solve, or the characters in every story, you’ll still enjoy the reader experience.
Among the best of the collection: Three Blind Mice, The Red House, Sanctuary, The Manhood of Edward Robinson, and the charming holiday Poirot spoof Christmas Adventure.
How could you go wrong with an Agatha Christie book?? This one was really good and not at all what I expected.
This was a fun collection of Agatha Christie's murder mystery short stories that revolve around Christmas or winter. They include selections from the Miss Marple Mysteries and Hercules Poirot Mysteries series. My favorite short story was "Three Blind Mice" based on the radio play in the UK in 1947. It was a delightful finger-pointing whodunnit. I honestly couldn't figure out the puzzle and was surprised at the reveal. If you are a mystery lover or an Agatha Christie fan, this is the perfect book for Christmastime reading!
Thank you to NetGalley and HaperCollins Publishers for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!
MIDWINTER MURDER by Agatha Christie contains a number of short stories by the prolific author and is subtitled "Fireside Tales from the Queen of Mystery." These are fun and engaging short whodunits – perfect for Christie fans and anyone looking for a quick distraction. The dozen short stories average around 20 pages each and feature mainly lesser known tales involving Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple, and the Tommy and Tuppence duo. It's difficult to believe that some of the tales are nearly 100 years old as they are still entertaining today; selections include "The Chocolate Box," "The Plymouth Express," and "A Christmas Tragedy." Even if you have read some selections before, MIDWINTER MURDER is still a treat to enjoy! Happy Holidays!
For readers of Golden Age mysteries, and fans of the Queen of Mystery herself, this book presents a treasure trove of winter-themed mystery stories. Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple make their appearances to aid in solving some of these mysteries. The introduction features "Christmas at Abney Hall," which is a remembrance from Dame Agatha's own autobiography. Reader s will find much to enjoy in this volume of a dozen short stories that occur in the winter holiday season. From poisoned meals to snowstorms, dangerous gifts and mysterious guests, these stories are the perfect treat for a cold and blustery afternoon. They are sure to bring a spot of joy to long time Christie fans as well as those new to the genre. The bibliography provides detailed information on each selection, including date and location of first publication and any alternate titles under which the stories were published.
I received this book from the publisher and from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinions here are entirely my own.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this book. I'll be posting my review on Goodreads and Amazon
This is the first book of Agatha Christie I’ve read but it won’t be the last. I throughly enjoyed this book of a collection of her short stories set in winter. My favorite was Three Blind Mice. I like the writing and the condensed mysteries and how smartly things come together. . Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an arc for an honest review.
Midwinter Murder is a collection of mysteries written with the style as only Agatha Christi can. The first story,
Three Blind Mice, is quite longer than the others so it took me awhile to get into it. I’m not saying it was bad by no means. I just had a plan to read one story every am and that one messed up my plan. :) .
This was my second Agatha book and it surely won’t be my last.
Thank you Netgalley for letting me read this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was the perfect Agatha Christie book for the winter season. I loved this compilation of short mysteries that felt like a classic, cozy winter read perfectly paired with a fireplace and warm drink. Not too scary, but intriguing puzzles that keep you guessing. I appreciated that the collection included some Poirot/classic Christie characters, but each stood alone and could be enjoyed without any prior knowledge. I love a classic whodunnit and these stories represent one of the best authors of that genre. The perfect read for a cold day this winter!
Having recently been on an Agatha Christie short story binge I found this collection to be fairly decent.
The seasonal theme is a nice hook for bookstores, but I don't think our library needs to add it to our collection.
Thanks for the ARC netgalley & william morrow
