Stop whatever you are doing right now and treat yourself to a copy of this wonderful book. Yes, as a professed dog person who prefers the company of my dog to people I may be biased, but unless you have a heart of stone you will love this book. It would be amazing at any time, but during the pandemic when we are all desperately looking for something loving joyful, uplifting and well just sweet this is the perfect read for you. Everyone needs their own Russell.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for my digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
I chose this book because, DER, there is a cute dog on the cover. And who doesn't like a good spiritual adventure? I loved this book! It was fun to see the world through Russell's eyes, even though it was also heartbreaking at times. It was also fun to read about the dog's past lives and what led him to his current life. The book starts with Russell as a puppy with his family living in a place he called the Pit...which sounds like a horrible place. They were constantly having to fight for their lives and any food they might get. There is a bully that wants to eat Russell and almost gets a chance to. There are also some mean little boys who like to throw rocks at the dogs and hurt them if they can. All I can tell you is if I ever found out my son was hurting animals, I would never let him forget it. We would be doing all sorts of volunteering so he could see how painful and scary a homeless dog's life can be. One day, people show up and take Russell and his siblings away(and all other puppies there), leaving the adults behind. Okay, can you say heartbreaking? WTF? The puppies are actually getting rescued and his siblings get adopted, leaving him behind. Wow, he just loses everyone he loves, doesn't he? One day, a woman and her dog show up and he gets to go home with them. And this is where the fun begins. At one year old, his Spirit Guides start to talk to him about his former lives, one in particular. I loved reading about the pacts we make before we move on to a new life and what we need to revisit and try to accomplish in the next life...over and over again, we come back until we learn everything we need to and fix whatever we need to. This was not the first time I have heard such things and I 100% believe them to be true. I also love the theory(again, I do believe this) that the people in our lives, good and bad, tend to be the same people over and over. I loved the book...
