As a teacher, I am unsure about recommending this to a child; it's a picture book, yet the text is a very sophisticated exhortation to a boy to live a virtuous, kind, and engaged life. It might work as a gift to a boy who's about to start a journey toward adulthood, but at that age, a boy might balk at being handed a picture book, regardless of how inspiring the message might be.
