3.5 stars. Paige is a sign language interpreter who get called in by the police to help question a deaf family after a brutal murder of a child occurred in their home overnight while everyone was sleeping. Paige’s sister happens to be the godmother of the child so Paige doesn’t reveal her conflict of interest in order to find out what happened.
There are lots of family members and friends in this story which can make it a little confusing to keep track of who is related to whom but Pattinson does a good job with everyone’s personality and makes them distinctive. It was a great creepy premise but very little happened that I found surprising. I was trying not to think to deeply but was still able to see when I was being lead down a rabbit hole and was able to figure out who was innocent by how much attention was paid to them.
I really enjoyed the plot of this book. However, the pacing was a bit too slow for me. The writing is solid and I enjoyed the characters. I wish it had picked up more.
Thank you so much to @netgalley and @avon_books for sending me this ARC of The Silent House (published on September 1st) in exchange for my honest review. Guys the second I read this description I knew I had to request it! A murder of a child while the entire family is in the house!! But said family is deaf so they never even knew what was going on. So the cops consult Paige Northwood to interpret but she feels as if there’s more going on and the family has some skeletons in the closet.
Intriguing right? Wrong. I really really tried to make it through this book but after about 20% into I literally could not do it anymore. The beginning was promising but something after the first couple chapters was very much eh for me. The character development was lacking, it was a slow burn but not in the good kind of way and I felt like what I did read was a bit choppy and all over the place. The plot could have been super promising with a bit rearranging? A bit more execution?
I could only imagine the struggles of not being able to hear anymore. Or ever so the concept was so interesting. You never know though my DNF may be your next diamond in the rough. 2.5⭐️
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an advanced copy!!
In a deaf community the unspeakable happens. An 18 month old little girl is murdered in her crib. No one knows it happened until the next morning. Paige is hired to interrupt for the police and is closer to the investigation than they think.
I really loved the actual story of the book....but I hate to say this one took me forever to read. It did not pull me in right away and I just didn’t like the characters at all. But I loved the actual story line and for a hearing person it brought light on some of the struggles deaf people experience...... that’s what made me keep reading. The killer was a surprise for me and for that I’m giving 4/5.
Rating: 3 🍷 🍷 🍷 !!!!!!!
Book: The Silent House
(AVAILABLE NOW-Release Date: September 1, 2020)
Author: Nell Pattison
Genre: Thrillers, Mystery, Suspense
Trigger Warning-Child death
The Silent House had such a great premise. I loved how the author used the deaf community and sign language as the basis of the story. I mean just imagine that a tragic thing is happening in your house, but you cannot stop it because you can’t hear it happening. As interesting as the storyline is, it is just as predictable. The moment all the characters were introduced, I automatically predicted the killer, motive, and how it happened. With that said, I still enjoyed watching the story play out and following Paige throughout her journey, although she got to be a bit annoying. A book about children being killed is always so hard to read but I think this one was not overly gory or descriptive. Quick read, new premise and interesting, so I would recommend it!

The synopsis for “ The Silent House” by Neil Pattison left me intrigued and I knew it was something that I had to read. The plot is what really made me want to read this. I did find the pacing to be a bit slow and the story itself was a little hard to follow along with at times. There were so many pieces to the story but unfortunately, they were scattered all over the place. I also wanted more character development. Overall, it just fell a little flat.
The premise of the book caught my attention right away as I hadn't thought about a scenario of a thriller novel and the characters being deaf and not being able to hear warning signs of the danger around them. The story was suspenseful throughout without, in my case, any sort of predictable outcome. I was eager to read each page to understand what truly happened the night in question and who really committed the crime. Definitely a thrill from start to finish! I look forward to reading more from Nell Pattison.
Original idea that fell completely flat on it's face. This had everything to do with the pacing of the story (super slow) and the story line just never really made it out of the starting gate.
I can NOT say I didn't like this book but it took me awhile to finish it. This was a slow burn and unfortunately I have a hard time getting through books like that.
First of all thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me access to this title.
The beginning of this book had a lot of promise. A tragic murder of a toddler in a house of a dead family necessitates the need for the police to bring in a BSL interpreter. I was hooked from the beginning and quickly became invested in what happened to the little girl. However it started to become repetitive by the halfway mark that it lost its quick pacing and became harder for me to come back to read.
For the most part there was a lot of good character development and the characters did feel realistic. My complaint was that while the main character was likable in the beginning she became annoying after the halfway mark with how much she was meddling. I think if you’re going to have a character involve themself so much in a police investigation, they should have a bigger role than just an interpreter.
That being said the story was unique and it did have some good suspense. I loved that the author wrote about the dead community and I think there’s also something especially sinister about a murder committed in a house of a deaf family.
While this book may not have been for me, I could see others enjoying it more.
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the advance ecopy.
This was a bit different type of story. It involves a deaf family whose daughter was bludgeoned to death in her bed and no one heard a thing. Page Northwood is the interpretor for the family, she grew up in a house with deaf people so she knows sign language. She knows the family aside from this also. The story is a bit dragging and a bit of a repetitiveness. In the end it comes together.
This was an excellent thriller with a unique premise. Our amateur sleuth isn’t hearing impaired but her entire family is so her primary language is BSL. Paige has found herself in the role as an interpreter despite other aspirations. Paige recently started out on her own as a freelance interpreter and one night she is woken up by a call from the police requesting her assistance with an emergency, Paige finds herself at the scene where a toddler was just murdered. The stress is overwhelming but she’s haunted by another little girl that she did not help and she’s determined to help bring the murderer to justice. This was a quick read that kept my interest. There were some interest twists and turns and although I figured out the murderer fairly early on I still greatly enjoyed this story. I’m excited to dive into the next book as soon as possible now!
The Silent House was a pretty predictable read. It was interesting to read something that involved the deaf community but it was hard to keep up with who was talking especially when they were signing. I think that a good edit would have cut down on the story as it was an incredibly slow read that could have been much shorter and it would have sped up the story quite a bit. Suspenseful bits weren't very suspenseful. It really could have been a wonderful story if it had a bit more mystery and suspense.
This book is awful. So slow and boring. The original plot makes this book sound sooooooo great. But it was a huge disappointment. The character development is weak rather unconvincing. Scenes don't add up
This book had a lot of promise--I was excited to read another thriller--and this had a different plot. It hurts me to give bad reviews, but I'll just say it was quite difficult to finish this book. It was super slow. the characters were just 'eh'.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I received this ebook from Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion and review. I gotta say, I loved this one. I liked the Deaf aspect of it, it definitely gave me some insight on what it’s like to be Deaf, especially when it comes to being involved in a police investigation. I loved Paige, and I’m super excited that there will be another novel with her in it! She’s definitely my kind of character. I definitely recommended reading this, especially if you like murder mysteries.
Paige Nothwood finds herself in the most unlikely position having to interpret on behalf of the police in an active murder investigation that hits a little to close to home. Her younger sister happens to be the Godmother of the little girl, Lexi, who was killed so Paige is already a little to close for comfort. What she doesn’t know is just how close she really is to the entire mess until she starts investigating on her own.
There’s a great twist at the end that I never saw coming but it wasn’t too hard to see who committed the horrible crime once the story unfolded about halfway through. That being said, not everything was divulged at once, the leaking of facts happened gradually and left undone until the very end. That’s when you’ll find satisfaction!
I admit it took me a minute to get into this one, not because it was a bad read but just because life knows how to get in the way of a good story, especially when you need one the most! Because most of the characters in this story are deaf, it was told a little differently which I really enjoyed although my only complaint that it was slow going at times. I felt like too much detail went into certain areas where it wasn’t needed. However, overall I really liked it.
If someone was in your house, you’d know … Wouldn’t you?
But the Hunter family are deaf, and don’t hear a thing when a shocking crime takes place in the middle of the night. Instead, they wake up to their worst nightmare: the murder of their daughter.
This sinister read was great. I enjoyed how this story was told.
It was a fast easy read from the beginning.
I loved the characters, plot, storyline, ending.
Fabulous!!
Thank You NetGalley, Publisher and Author for this gifted copy.
The Silent House is a wild ride. It really keeps you guessing who the killer is until the very end. I really loved how the author involved deaf culture into the book and showcased such tools like a flashing light for the doorbell. The premise is scary to imagine being deaf and your child is murdered in her bed, sleeping. Chilling and a great story. Although at time I found myself yelling at the main character for some decisions she made. Sometimes very stupid decisions, but it all worked out in the end.
I enjoyed this so much!
First of all, it’s the sort of messy domestic thriller we love – full of sordid behavior, some characters you adore and some you just want to slap, and a really heinous murder. The book is fast paced, the case is fascinating, and the main character does very few stupid things (lol I hate stupid character syndrome).
But, it also takes place within the Deaf Community and I just loved being let into Deaf Culture for a bit. It seemed so authentic and, after reading the book, I was interested to find out that the author is Deaf and is a teacher within the community. I loved the way she intertwined her culture with a wonderfully messy murder mystery!
If I had one complaint, it was that there are a bit too many point of view chapters. Some characters have a ton of them, while others have just one. I realize it was so that we can have some insight into their own thoughts/behavior, but I did find myself wishing the author had chosen a different way to convey that.
However, I thoroughly enjoyed this read. I hope the author continues to offer us more thrillers in the future!
