A really interesting thriller that had the added bonus of introducing me to the deaf community, language and struggles.
What an exciting read! I could not stop reading The Silent House! There were twists and turns and just when everything was figured out, another bomb dropped! I really enjoyed reading about the Deaf community in England. I was a dead interpreter at a college in California and love the Deaf community here. The signs are different but the community seems to be very similar. I love how well Nell Pattison explains everything and makes the reader feel drawn into Paige’s world. I’m really looking forward to reading the next book in this series!
I highly recommend this book and I’m giving it 5 stars!
Thank you so much to Avon UK, HarperCollins, and NetGalley for allowing me the privilege of reading this book in advance!
This was a great read if you like a mystery, but I wouldn’t call it a “thriller.” The perspective of the murder occurring with in the deaf community added an interesting dimension to the plot and characters while also being very educational. You can tell the author has experience in deaf education so this feels interesting and enlightening, not exploitative for the sake of an edgy plot element. Seeing the story through the interpreter also creates a unique feeling that the story is being “double filtered.” You get what the characters are saying, but also the embellishment of the protagonist.
The characters themselves were okay. This protagonist isn't necessarily likable, but this is also the first in what will be a series. First books have to introduce the cast, the backstory and an entire functioning plot, so maybe Paige will fill out with time. The plot was not strictly predictable, but you do know the killer long before the characters get around to the idea. This isn't a bad thing, readers like to feel like they are solving the mystery, but this feels more like a slightly cozy mystery and not so much an up-all-night thriller. Still an enjoyable read and I would enjoy reading the next in the series since this premise and set of characters has lots of potential.
This novel started out so strong but then fell flat. It took a while to narrow down the possible suspects. Though I felt that it dragged on a bit, I was still shocked by the ending. I did not see that coming. I would give it a 3.5 out of 5. I was just expecting a bit more excitement.
There are not many books out there that feature main characters who are deaf or hearing impaired. This novel grabbed my interest because my town is home to a large school for the deaf, and we also have an active deaf community. It was a little slow in the beginning and I had a hard time identifying with the narrator, a free-lance interpreter for the deaf. She struck me as both selfish and wimpy. I guessed the culprit fairly early, there were many clues, so the mystery part didn't hold my attention. But something did. I kept reading to the end, even though recently I've given up on many books before reaching the 10% read mark.
Many of the characters in The Silent House are deaf and the problems they had communicating with police was interesting. Maybe the insights Pattison offered into the deaf community saved the novel for me. Altogether, a solid debut. I'll look for her next novel.
The silent house was a surprise look into the deaf works. The story was pretty good the mystery was a good read especially if you’re interested in the deaf community.
This book. which I received from Netgalley in exchange for a review, didn't live up to the hype for me. It was confusing trying to keep track of who was deaf and who wasn't, the list of suspects. The protagonist acted irresponsibly throughout and I knew who did it by 40% through the book.
I was enthralled by the depth of character development in this book. It gave an insight into the world of the deaf that I haven't seen before. The murder of a child in a deaf household was heartbreaking and learning the how and why was tragic.
This is an excellent read. I had trouble putting it down. Five stars for sure.
The Silent House had me from the description - “If someone were in your house, you’d know, wouldn’t you?” The Hunter family are all deaf and didn’t hear a thing when a member of their family was murdered in their bed in the middle of the night.
The story centers around Paige, a BSL interpreter, who is a hearing person in the deaf community. Paige assists the police in the investigation, but is also involved in another capacity as she knows the members of the family of the deceased.
This novel is a fast read and though well written, I’ve found that the “whodunnit” was a bit easy to guess from the beginning. Still, a good read!
This was a great thriller that had my heart racing by the end. It's suspenseful and well written. I did guess who the killer was by about the halfway mark, but it didn't lessen my enjoyment of this book.
