I love Al Roker! This was a fun read that was full of wisdom. I enjoyed learning about his journey from college to being everyone’s favorite weatherman! He included lots of advice that he has received over the years, and I could hear his voice as I read. I highly recommend this book. Special thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
I love watching Al Roker on The Today Show each morning. He brings fun and personality to the show and to the weather forecast. So, I was definitely interested in hearing the story behind the man. And Al does not disappoint. This is a well-written, funny and personal look into his life and career. Does he cover everything? No, he does not, but one thing he does do is not gloss over the hard times. He maintains his honesty, showing that even though he is one of our favorite TV weather personalities, he is still just a normal guy. I thoroughly enjoyed this window into Al’s world. Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book.
I love Al Roker and this book was just delightful - I enjoyed it so much!
Thanks for granting me an ARC for review - I would whole-heartedly recommend this!
Al Roker talks about his career. It begins with him in college till now at the Today show. He talks a little bit about his childhood but mostly it covers his rise to fame. He talks about the people who he admired and the stories from the newsroom. It’s not heavy material and doesn’t delve to deep. It’s an enjoyable read about how he made it doing the weather. Thank you to NetGalley and Hachette Books. This is my own opinion.
As someone who worked in television news for the better part of 15 years, I can say with confidence that “You Look So Much Better Better in Person” is a phrase you get used to as an on-air personality. For women, it’s typically comments about your hair. I also had two on-air pregnancies (and went live until the day before I went to the hospital to give birth). People feel entitled to plenty of opinions!
I read this book over the weekend as we traveled through my old reporting stomping grounds in north central West Virginia on the way to our favorite mountain spot. I feel particularly fond of Al Roker. When I was in journalism school (at Marshall University) Roker came to speak at a fundraiser. I can’t remember what the fundraiser was, but I somehow convinced my mom to pay way too much money and attend the event with me. Roker’s flight had somehow been scheduled for Charleston, South Carolina rather than Charleston, West Virginia, so he was late, and you could tell he was a bit unhappy about it. However, he turned on that t.v. charm and worked the room graciously. This makes so much more sense after reading the book!
Back in my high school/college days, my ultimate goal was to be on the Today Show. I mean, it’s pretty much the goal of anyone remotely interested in television news. I’ve read countless memoirs and backstories on how the big shot journalists got to where they are. I know how much work it takes to get there. (One of my former colleagues in WV is a reporter for the Today Show now!) Heck, it took a ton of work just to have the privilege of working in my own hometown!
Each chapter is set up as an “Altruism” Al’s quintessential Al-ness is on every page and in every story. He’s totally authentic. I think that’s a huge reason he’s been so successful. Roker credits coming into that authenticity early in his career to Willard Scott. Yup, the one and only.
I really enjoyed hearing about how Scott became a mentor to Roker in Washington, D.C. I enjoyed learning little tidbits about how Scott was Bozo the Clown and modified that costume to become the first Ronald McDonald. If you don’t know, now you know 😊
Al’s advice is practical, full of wit and wisdom, and fun. He peels back the curtain just enough to get unique glimpses into his life without oversharing. It’s the perfect read when you need a little motivation or something refreshing and uplifting.
Let me start by saying, this book is filled with humorous moments. There were times that I actually laughed out loud.

Y𝐨𝐮 L𝐨𝐨𝐤 So Much B𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 I𝐧 P𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 is a book of Al’s quick witted advice. As we all know achieving success can be very hard, and maintaining that success can be even harder. Al shares some of the lessons he’s learned over his many years as coanchor of The Today Show. The book spans his entire career as a weatherman. But, it moved at such as fast pace that I was never bored.
⠀
Each chapter contains an “Altruism”. There are 16 Altruisms in all, and they are all very unique. For instance, Altruism #2 is “If You’re Gonna Cry, Know How To Cry”. In this chapter Al tells you what to do if you cry at work. This is just one of the many chapters that made laugh. Good stuff..
⠀
I also enjoyed the story of how he came up with the title of this book. It’s not often an author goes into detail about how they’ve come up with the title to their book. But Al did! And the only thing I have to say about it is this...If I happen to go to The Today Show, I’ll never tell Al he looks so much better in person..

Living in a time of complete uncertainty, it was nice to read a book that stressed the importance of being open to change.

Overall I enjoyed the book. It’s lighthearted and fun yet filled with a lot practical advice. I give it 4/5⭐️s.
I adored this book! I’ve grown up with Roker’s “and here’s what’s happening in your neck of the woods” and thoroughly enjoyed watching him! This read like a personal conversation with him. Instead of “here are some things you should do,” he provides each ALtruism with a personal story relating to the message. Roker goes through his work history; however it does not read as a factual resume. I loved the personal stories and the messages he is getting across. Roker is a fantastic writer and I look forward to reading more by him!
You Look So Much Better in Person is an autobiography from Al Roker, who you probably know from The Today Show! The book tells all about how his career got its start with each chapter or "Altruism". This was a quick read but very amusing and interesting! I've always liked Al so it was nice to read more about how he got his start and the challenges he faced. I also really liked hearing his behind the scenes take on what it was like playing Old Joe in Waitress! (The only show on Broadway I have seen twice!) He also tells a great story about the ONE time he overslept and didn't get up at his usual 3:45am wake up time. (I can't even imagine being up that early - let alone doing it thousands of days in a row, yikes!)
I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.
