Delightful paranormal cozy. I had read previous books in the series, but that was a couple of years ago. So the author's quick recap at the beginning was definitely helpful. Still I would recommend not starting the series with this book.
Two main storylined play off of each other here. That Amber Blackwood is really a witch is known by only 3 non-witchy folk: her best friend, the chief of police and her ex-boyfriend whose memory of it has started to return. Her parents are deceased and their legendary book of spells, grimoires, are catnip to evil forces. Also, the murder of a corrupt police chief in a neighboring town is being blamed on an innocent man. Both storylines have plenty to keep you captivated. Totally enjoyable!
Rating: 4.5 stars
This is the fourth book in a series, and the series really just has my heart! I'm super invested in the main characters, I love their dynamics, the plot is intriguing and keeps me entertained and it's just overall so enjoyable to read. I might have to look for even more books in the category of cozy mystery. And I mean, the setting is a witch in a small cat-obsessed town who owns a toy store, who accidently ends up solving mysteries! Who wouldn't love that!?
I really wanted to get like this book but I had a hard time getting into the story and a hard time finishing the book.
Pawsitively Swindled is the 4th book in the cozy mystery Witch of Edgehill series by Melissa Erin Jackson.
Following the dramatic events of the previous book (I won't spoil it for the reader!), Edgehill's resident witch Amber is learning more about her powers and her past, but not before becoming embroiled in a suspicious mystery in a neighbouring, rival town and exposing her secret identity.
I love this series - it's cozy and familiar, and a good weekend read. Ms Jackson has a delightful descriptive turn of phrase, and crafts both vivid descriptions and realistic dialogue. I stumbled across the first book in this series via Netgalley, and have since purchased the rest of the series.
I received a copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I've actually really enjoyed this series so far! I really like how imperfect Amber is especially when it comes to her powers. Most books that deal with witches the characters seem to be perfect especially when it comes to their powers. So it's refreshing to have a book where the witch is pretty much clueless when it comes to the community. I'm looking forward to reading more books by Melissa!
Another excellent edition to a wonderful series! Full of twists and turns that leaves you wanting more and enjoying each moment until the end when the killer is caught!
A big thank you to NetGalley and Ringtail Press for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is part of a series, but it reads fairly well as a stand alone. I have not read all of the books and was not confused. Amber is the town's secret witch and this is her story. It's fun and cute. Nice cozy mystery. 3 stars
I really tried to like this book, but I just couldn't get into it. I couldn't even finish it because it was just too boring to me. I definitely won't be reading other books by this author.
Another amazing addition to the series! I cannot WAIT to read whatever Melissa Erin Jackson writes next! Always a great escape into a wonderfully unique world.
Series is getting stronger with each book. A fun paranormal getaway read, Characters you want to keep getting to know,
This is the 4th book in the "Witches Of Edgehill" series by author Melissa Jackson. This is my first book in the series and I adored reading this book. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity. My review opinion is my own. I love the paranormal featured in this book and look forward to reading the remainder of the series.
We are introduced to Amber, a enchanted magical toy maker who is on a difficult task to hide her families Grimoires. She needs to take them to a nearby town with her friend Edgar to hide them for their own protection. A warring magically family wants access to their secrets within the books. Amber is determined to hid the ancient teachings and spells from them with a magical spell . Amber then has to protect her Father when he is arrested as prime suspect in a murder of the local Sheriff. Amber knows he is innocent and begins her sleuthing. Amber has her hands full and has many friends both magic and not that assist her in her quest to free her Father and protect her families legacy.
I love the variety of charcters and the fun humorous paranormal side of this book. The sleuth was well crafted and this book in the series a fun read.
I am so sorry. I apparently forgot to send this book to my Kindle before it was removed from Net Galley.. Since I really like this series, as soon as I can get a copy I will add my review. My apologies.
Princess Fuzzypants here: With each new book, more people learn about and accept Amber’s powers as a witch. Amber herself is only now learning more about herself and discovering she is a very formidable witch. She has defeated one of the Penhallow clan but knows there will be others who will seek her mother’s grimoire. It seems her mother could time travel and Amber has inherited that talent.
She is also accumulating quite a posse of associates and friends who help her. They include the Chief of Police, her best friend, her boyfriend and a newly discovered warlock in the next town. She meets him after her cousin Edgar teaches her how to use her witchy GPS as she learns the witch version of geocaching. He’s lucky to have met Amber as he is framed for the murder of the Police Chief in his town and he cannot remember what happened. She’s enlisted to help find out what really happened and who killed the victim.
Amber is an interesting character who is surprised each time she realizes she is stronger than she ever expected. Her friends and family are a great addition and I have enjoyed the way her boyfriend Jack has come to terms with her “secret:. When he finally decides he wants to be in her life no matter what, it’s very satisfying how the relationship evolves.
But as Amber et co discover towards the end of the book, the Penhallows are a big family and they are not going to stop coming at her any time soon. That means there is lots of scope for further adventures. Sign me up.
Five purrs and two paws up.
I have read each of these books as they have come available! I have also hand sold them in my store! I enjoy the main character so much - and the little town. I would recommend you read them from the beginning to get a fuller feel for everyone - but could be read alone. Interesting witches and more of background in this story. Can't wait for more!
Pawsitively Swindled is the fourth book in the Witch of Edgehill series by Melissa Erin Jackson. I do recommend reading this series in order, although the author does include a nice summary in the beginning of the book. Even as a returning reader, I found this very helpful to remind myself of the particulars so I could get into the book more quickly than I normally would.
Amber Blackwood, Edgehill’s secret resident witch, recently found her parents’ grimoires and the powerful time spells within. Amber must find an impregnable hiding place for the grimoires, though she has no clue where to start looking. When her cousin Edgar suggests the game of Magic Cache, a magic-infused version of geocaching played by witches all over the world, Amber agrees to learn how to play. After all, a weird plan is better than no plan. In the process he gets caught up in a murder investigation where one man is dead and a second one framed for the crime. To complicate matters, the framed man’s condescending daughter, Bianca, wants Amber’s help—and Bianca just happens to chair Marbleglen’s Floral Frenzy Flower Festival Committee, the rival to Edgehill’s own Here and Meow Festival Committee. The two women are thrown into an uneasy alliance. Amber works to unravel the mystery to ensure the right culprit ends up behind bars and Marbleglen’s safety is restored. But Amber knows that even if Marbleglen’s mystery is resolved, a bigger danger lurks in the shadows. If the Penhallows claim the grimoires of Amber’s late parents, they’ll use the books’ time-reversal spells to try to stop the curse from ever having poisoned their clan—and, in the process, possibly rewriting history.
Pawsitively Swindled is a solid mystery with significant character growth, and the introduction of more characters. I enjoyed seeing Amber, Edgar, Jack, and Kim continue to grow in their individual lives and as a group, and I liked the continual growth of connections and other characters- like Chief Brown. I thought the introductions of characters in Marbleglen offer more depth the the mystery, and more options the the future of the series. The mystery of who framed Simon for murder is very well done, and woven seamlessly into Amber's larger story and growth. There are a great deal of personal relationships forming, or growing, in the story and it was highly engaging. As I read I wanted to know the who done it, and the hows and whys involved. However, I was equally interested in the personal relationships of the characters, what the Penhallows were up to, what Connor and Molly were investigating, and the particulars of the magic dead zones. There is a whole lot going on in the book, but it was so firmly woven together that it never felt like it was too much, which sometimes happens. I am really looking forward to seeing what comes next. I will definitely continue following this series.
Pawsitively Swindled is a great continuation of the series. It moves the larger story line forward while still offering an engaging and satisfying mystery. I am eager to see where the story goes from here.
I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Wow!! This one left me with sooooo many questions for the next book.
This installment into our witchy saga has a few new twists- a new magical game of geocaching, a new town to play in, and a few new witches. I really liked that this book took up equal amounts of plot both inside and outside of Edgehill. Yes, I like the quiet little city, but seeing Marbleglen firsthand was new and different.
This time around, they have to help their “floral frenemies” from the next town over and this time we’re investigating a murder in ‘the safest town in Oregon.’ Well, not so safe now...
I love how she always ties everything in, and how all of the installment storyline is addressed; but sets up the next as well as long term questions as well. Like I said, I have many, and now? Now I wait for the next one rather impatiently. (But totally worth the frustration!!)
yet another great installment in the series! This time Amber and her friends are investigating the murder of the chief of police of the neighboring town. So happy to see Jack back and i love Amber's non-whitchy friends accepting and embracing her abilities.
As usual the Penhallow clan is after her Grimoire and adds to her headaches. Can't wait for the next book to come out!
I like this series because of its world building and the well rounded, quirky, and likeable characters.
This is an excellent addition to the series and it features a solid mystery full of twists and turns, and a lot of the development to the world building and the witches' lore.
I was happy to meet again the great cast of characters and read about the developments in their life and was hooked by the mystery that kept me guessing.
Even if it can be read as a stand alone I think it's better to read the previous books in order to get a fully understanding of the story.
I strongly recommend it.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
This series gets better with every book I read. This is the 4th book in the series and its delightful. The mystery is well written and the characters are engaging and quirky. Definitely one of the better paranormal cozy mysteries out there today. This can be read as a standalone but for pure enjoyment you should start at the beginning.
This is the fourth book in the series. I haven't read the others but think in this case it would have been helpful to do so.
Amber uses her fledgling magic to help the local police chief solve the murder of the corrupt police chief from the next town. The book has enough red herrings to keep you guessing, the characters are interesting and generally likeable and there's humour running through the book.
I'm going to go back and start reading from the beginning of the series.
