There wasn't much character development when it came to Cirrus and that might be why the romance fell a bit short in my eyes. On a friend level, Sunny and Cirrus were a good match, but beyond that I didn't see much chemistry.
This one was not for me at the time I tried to read it but that’s because I’m a total mood reader. I will definitely be going back to this at some point though.
Yoon's writing is witty and relatable, effortlessly capturing the voice of a modern teenager. The characters are well-developed and endearing, each with their own quirks and struggles that add depth to the narrative. From the lovable misfits of Sunny's band to the enigmatic love interest, Yoon creates a cast of characters that readers can't help but root for.
What sets "Super Fake Love Song" apart is its exploration of the tension between perception and reality in the age of social media. Through Sunny's journey, Yoon delves into the ways in which teenagers navigate the pressure to conform to certain ideals and present a carefully curated version of themselves online. This theme serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of authenticity in an increasingly digital world.
Overall, "Super Fake Love Song" is a delightful read that will resonate with high school students and adults alike. With its charming characters, witty dialogue, and thought-provoking themes, David Yoon's novel is sure to leave a lasting impression on readers.
This was a cute and fun young adult read!! It was a good palate cleanse when I wanted to read a book but did not know what to pick up. Not my fave ya novel but still super good!
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group for this DRC.
Pretending to be in a band is something I certainly did in high school. Sunny takes it further, dressing like a rock star and getting his friends to pull off this fake to impress Cirrus. Fun and completely relatable.

I decided to DNF this book and will
Not be reviewing it on my Bookstagram account. The writing style was to chaotic for me.
This book was just sadly not for me! I was hoping for something different but it turned out to be something I was not expecting, which is okay and I'm sure someone else would love it!
I absolutely enjoy this author's writing style! David Yoon has such a great way to describing characters and writing a story that is interesting. He is a go to author.
Super cute first love and hanging getting to know your crush. I really enjoyed the Korean representation in this book and the exploration of how the relationship between First Gen Korean Americans and their parents.
A lighter, funnier, more rom-com follow-up to Yoon's EXCELLENT "Frankly in Love," "Super Fake Love Song" still packs in the riveting family and coming-of-age story with charming, easy-to-love characters. A very easy recommendation for my high school students.
David Yoon can do no wrong with his books. I absolutely adored his first book, and Super Fake Love Song held up!
Super cute romance and I absolutely adore the characters. Great story and a fast read not too long. Starts off kinda slow but after character and world building it picks up
I will be honest that I had riding on me liking this book by an author who’s writing I genuinely enjoy but the first couple of chapters made me cringe. I had a hard time getting into the book because of the way that Yoon described his African American character in the story who is apparently the best friend of the main character. It gave really gimmicky “I’m trying to be cool” vibes but it fell short of it and straight into disappointing.
I really, really enjoyed this. I did. It was fun, but I’m not the BIGGEST fan of pretending to be someone else to get the object of your affection. It’s not fun for me.
However. I did still enjoy this. It was fun.
I loved Frankly in Love! Sadly, I did not love this one. It was a very solid and sweet rom-com (with a strong hook!) but it fell a bit flat to me. I started this book thinking the age old trope of fake-dating-to-actual-dating would shaken up a bit... but it hit all the usual marks without much flare. The resolution warranted a shrug, not a smile.
However, I do enjoy Yoon's writing style! It is very readable, fun, and upbeat.
There were elements of this book I enjoyed but it wasn't a favorite. The end felt a little shoved together for me and not properly resolved. I really enjoyed some of the characters, but overall, this was just ok for me.
Thank you Netgalley and Penguin Teen for the ARC.
Sadly, Super Fake Love Song did not grab my attention as I thought it would. I was super hype for the book, but was disappointed by the execution. I ended up putting down the book, too bored to continue.
After reading David Yoon's debut novel, FRANKLY IN LOVE, I was thrilled to seek out his next book. When I learned it was centered around a boy bands and a case of mistaken identity, I knew it was a book I had to immediately have on my TBR!
Right from the start, I could tell that the tone was generally lighter than FRANKLY IN LOVE, making it a quick and enjoyable read. I loved watching Sunny discover more about himself and who he hopes to be while he manages his web of lies trying to impress a girl. Yet at the same time, we explore notably deep messages of friendship and identity amidst the fun chaos that is at the forefront of the story.
While the romance was adorable and fun to watch unfold, I much heavily preferred moments between Sunny and his friends. I adored Sunny's nerdy personality and seeing him and his friends fully embrace their favorite past times such as Dungeons and Dragons, and while I would've loved to see a dramatic movie montage of him transform in the rocker he aspires to be, reading about it was just as fun.
David Yoon is easily making his name in the Young Adult contemporary community, and both his books have noticeably surprised me with their thought-provoking contemporary and loveable character. I'm excited to see what he writes next!
I love the diversity but I wasn't a huge fan of this. I don't think it would have been something I would have gone for so I'm going to say it was me. I just don't like there is so much lying, even in the author's first book there was a lot of misguided energy going on.
I always love books that play on that mistaken identity and then if you add music into the loop it makes it come alive. I was very interested in the love story for this one to see how it would play out. I loved how everything got together to join this fake band and I was interested to see how far this lie would get taken and if would be believable. I really enjoyed the diverse representation of characters and I always root for a nerd. This was quirky, and just different from other YA rom coms I had been reading as of late. Loved the friendships and the theme of learning what makes you different is what makes you stand out.
