This was a story about women being kidnapped and after many years of abuse are found wandering, starving, basically left for dead.
The place is Montana, the year 1877. The U.S. Cavalry found them and are trying to figure out what to do with them.
In this book you’ll find heartache, hope and romance. It was written fairly well but I wanted some parts a little more developed.

This was a type of book that l had never read and l was not disappointed in it. There was excitement, fear and happiness for me to enjoy. The characters were brave and interesting. This book kept me wanting to find out what happened to Birdie Mae and l thoroughly enjoyed it.

3.5 stars. Average read; nothing really stood out in the book. It was too convienent; with everthing being neatly tied up at the end.

Bitter Autumn is a well written, captivating story. It deals with a subject few broach, the elimination of the native americans as viewed by some captive women. I felt the pain, suffering, longing for safety and the strength of these women were palpable. Birdie is only 23 but has lived with the natives since she was 5. Now in the custody of the U.S. Army, she can't even remember her English language. These women get very little sympathy from the whites at the Fort. The story is her journey back from captivity and her romance with a cavalry officer. I won't spoil it here for you, but the characters are so well written, you will find it hard to put this down till you get to the end.
