This was a book that had quite an interesting name and cover that I was intrigued to give it a try even though I am not much a fan of graphic novels. I mean could it really be bad if it is combining dogs and wolves? Unfortunately it is....
The characters within the book aren't really in-depth and as such you have a bit of a stereotype going for each and - even with sheep thought to be stupid - these ones will drive you crazy. The rest of the characters have no saving grace to endear you to them even though occasionally the illustrations hit cute.
The story is a bit on the exaggerated side and Clayton doesn't take the time to learn about the wolves that he is trying to get his pup to integrate with. As such the book is non-factual and has glaring mistakes such as the fact besides wolves drawing hunting plans, suggesting that they are required to pee everywhere to mark their path so others can find them instead of using the glands on their feet, that all alpha wolves are male even if there is a more competent female, that they do love cries and can use the same to lure off naive young stupid male puppies so they can raid the farm's stock. Or even the fact that they would allow a female wolf to have pups in a strange pack that she didn't originally have any connection to.
Another glaring plot hole or two was the language process being portrayed. All the characters mostly speak English even if in the case of man he doesn't understand the animals themselves. At the same time the only animal that doesn't speak English is the coyote who is given a fictional language that the wolves cannot even understand. Why? Why must you differentiate coyotes but cannot do the same for man who cannot understand the animals or why can't you have the coyote also speak English like everyone else?
Finally just the lesson of the story seemed wonky if you can even call it that. Our hero is back home with his new life and gets the chance to visit the city. Forgotten is the adventures that he just went until not surprisingly he is able to find his way back to his past months later. When his new love interest after the "chance" meeting asks about the past conversation between the two basically he just shrugs it off as you didn't ask so I didn't tell.
But the main letdown for me was the graphic element since that is the medium in which the book is telling its story. There were times when the illustrations were straight on the point, the animals were cute and they all fit well into the book. But the majority of the illustrations instead were mangled remains trying to portray abnormality into animals that aren't given much a personality otherwise.
All in all it was an awful book to me and if you are looking for fictional dogs being raised by wolves then there is the Classic "White Fang" or "Kavik". These two choices are most definitely a better read even if they aren't illustrated.

This graphic novel follows the story of Silver, a dog who leaves his familiar farm home and routine to be among wolves. In that way, it touches the universal theme of yearning for a different, perhaps more primal or authentic life. On the other hand, this theme puts the novel at risk for being compared to other great stories with a similar theme, such as London's Call of the Wild. I will say though, that the author is able to provide a unique spin on the "Dog escapes to be part of the wild" theme. The artwork, as many have noted, is a standout feature of the novel. I feel the impact comes primarily from the color selection, as the line art sometimes leaves me feeling a little unsatisfied. If there is one drawback to the work, I would have to say the cohesion starts to suffer in later parts. I leave it to readers to make their own judgements about that. This is a graphic novel that is at least worth consideration.
This is a story of a farm dog, who wasn't treated very nicely and run away to join the wolves. I loved the story which was at the heart of this book. The art was simple and painting-like, but very nice.
Poor art, poor story. A farm dog's story about how he ran off with wolves. This story meanders throughout. I was thoroughly bored. The art was clunky. Just an all around fail.
The graphics were fine but I didn't care for the story because it seemed disjointed and confusing. I think the idea was interesting but it wasn't followed through.
Did not care for it. The art was okay but I could not engage with the animal protagonists. Maybe one for younger readers.
Super sweet, the artwork was whimsical and fun. This was an enjoyable and quick read, I recommend it.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. The story of a wolf who is watching the environment become more and more crippled by man.
This was a mess of a graphic novel. It didn't make sense and I didn't really like it. Very disappointed, I thought it was going to at least be cute for kids but because the story wasn't cohesive, it would be confusing for kids.
Thank you to the publisher and to Netgalley for the advance copy of this book!
This book was very cute. I think a child would enjoy this but as an adult it is missing something so it is hard to rate this as an adult know this is a children's book. I loved the plot and storyline in the book. I do recommend this author. I loved the writing. I will be looking for other works in the future from this author.
An interesting graphic novel exploring the journey of a dog who joins a wolf pack. I really liked the personalities given to all the animals, especially the sheep, and I thought the art was really stylistic and good for the story. Not much there by way of plot but a good enough read.
It is story of a dog and a female wolf. How their lives get intermingled on margins of normalcy.
Story is interesting and different. It shows interaction of two different species.
Artwork is simple, uncluttered and very good to compliment a good story.
I liked the story very much. It is easy on eyes and captions are sparse leaving no stress while reading it.
A wonderful graphic novel to be read by every lover of a different sort of story.
The gorgeous cover design was a hook I couldn’t resist. Unfortunately I wasn’t as happy with the plotting. The art is the best part of this comic, particularly the color choices. The line art layer would be unmemorable without the bright and captivating palette.
The story follows Silver/Toy a farm dog who runs off to join a pair of wolves. From there, the story follows a rather disjointed series of events detailing the clueless dog’s journey through wild and urban landscapes.
Of the story had been more fleshed out, either in character development or plotting, I would be tempted to give it a higher rating, as the story take some unusual turns that had potential but were not fleshed out. For example, the abrupt conclusion to the duck farm scene was a harsh stroke of brutal reality, The matter of fact portrayal of Toy and the female wolf’s acceptance of that tragedy was one of the strongest scenes in the comic. A similar matter of fact tone was attempted with the zoo scene near the end, but this time with far diminished effects. There needs to be a balance between the abruptness of life changing moments and character reaction time, otherwise it feels as though the reader is being treated like a member of Silver/Toy’s flock of sheep, which Speak, but only to endlessly echoe slight variations on the obvious facts in front of them.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing a copy of this ebook.
2 stars
How to share my thoughts for this! It was a tough book to read as there was so many thing happening!
It was disorganized and there was no link in the storyline and characters.
I will have to dnf this book if i received it in the mail.
Hope that the author can improve more! Loved the illustrations though!
Thank you so much for the arc from netgallery for an honest review.
I was given this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book was about a dog fleeing a farm and going exploring with a wolf.
That's the best description I can give this book since it didn't have a plot.
There was no real point to the Graphic Novel. It was cute. The art was pretty, but I don't exactly understand what I just read. There isn't much else for me to review or comment on since the book was lacklustre.
Overall it was cute, but that's about it.
A 2 star read from me.
'Wild Thing Or: My Life as a Wolf' with story and art by Clayton Junior is a graphic novel about a dog that decides to try living as a wolf for a while.
Silver is a sheep dog, but he might admit, he's not the best at it. His owner is quick to take things out on him, so one day Silver goes in to the woods and finds the pack of wolves that have been preying on the farm and decides to join them. Life is a wolf isn't all that easy, Silver finds out.
I liked the art in this book, but the story feels a bit sparse, and while it's supposedly for children, some of the content seems decidedly not child-friendly. The plot does meander a bit and I ended up liking it at the end, but wished for something more interesting along the way.
I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
Overall, this is an endearing story about a dog who runs with the wolves for a time only to be lured back into domesticity. I loved the character development and the portrayal of the excitements and dangers of living in the wild, but I have some reservations about the instances of animal cruelty in the book that seemed to have been glossed over. They were just presented and not discussed at all. Though I still enjoyed the story and the illustrations, those parts turned me off.
Received an arc via Netgalley.
Farm dog runs off with wolves. Wolves try to eat and encounter obstacles. It is weird, and gets weirder. I think it was supposed to be a cute story but it just wasn't.
This was a cute story, though a bit abstract at times. I had fun with this and finished it very quickly in one sitting. Better characterization than I've seen in some adult fiction, but I would've liked to see a bit more emotion and explanation for the way things ended.
Cute graphic novel for all ages about a dog who gets freedom, becomes friends with a wolf and lives in the wild before returning to his original owners. There is one spot of violence against the dog by owner. Otherwise a great story with good graphics.
I received this ARC in exchange for my honest review from netgalley.
