Lies Like Poison was an LGBTQ+ friendly murder mystery. It had multiple, as well as unreliable narrators. The plot was fast paced and the suspense was strong from the beginning to the end.
When the murder plot of three 14 year olds gets partially played out 3 years later more than one secret comes bubbling to the surface as 4 friends try to unravel the truth in this thriller. This story proves the point that families are not who we are born to (or as) but who we love and who loves us back.
I was a little disappointed in how the story all wrapped up. I felt that I was still wondering about the bad things that Evelyn did wo warrant her murder. There is no remorse for her death, by any character, yet I still felt like even though some of the things described were awful there were holes as far as details and motives. I was on page 302 hoping there would be an epilogue from Evelyn’s point of view describing her background and misdeeds.
Finally figured out how to download this! I thought I was going to be a fan of this, because I absolutely loved The Cheerleaders and it had a little bit of that vibe to it. Unfortunately I didn’t, misty because of the characters just didn’t come off as likable or dislikable. They were just kind of...meh, is this over yet? Overall, I really did want to love this but couldn’t get into it.
This fairy tale retelling is filled with interesting and "big" characters. Caricatures really. The old stories and characters are modernized quite nicely. While the magic, mystery, and darkness of the old tales remains. Still, it seemed like a lot of was attempted and the narrative would have benefited from more focus. In conclusion, this book is still a decent read and good order from a YA collection. Put this book in the hands of fans of Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, and viewers of Riverdale.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one! It was a mystery, romance, and fairytale all mixed into one. I really liked the relationships between Lily, Belle, Jack, and Raven. Their bonds and dynamic were great to about. The LGBTQ representation was also a really nice touch that I liked. The mystery and story was just fantastic. It was a gothic mystery with the elements of a fairytale. The story is about how the murder of Lily’s mom sets in motion the reunion between the four people and the past that haunts them. Their relationships are complicated and their all asking if one of them was the murdered. I had a great time reading this and would definitely recommend it.
