As much as I enjoyed this collection's stories, I feel as though the analysis in between really let it down. The stories were still wonderful and introduced me to a lot of new, smaller authors who I plan to keep reading, but the overall pacing felt off because of the essays.

This is the perfect book for a high school library. Any student interested in writing fiction will be interested in Nova Ren Suma and Emily X. R. Pan's craft essays that follow each short story, and the stories themselves are a wonder.

A wonderful, rich collection of short stories. I love how they are accompanied with author and editor statements on the craft of writing. Wonderful for independent reading and creative writing. groups.

This was an interesting mix of stories aimed at a teenage audience. Adults, too, will enjoy these well-written tales. The insight into the writing (provided by authors) was also welcome.

I have decided that I am not a big fan of short stories. I like to see characters develop and to care about what happens to them and this is difficult to achieve in a short story. I am left with too many unresolved questions. Having said that, this is an interesting collection of stories as they are presented with an introduction and then an explanation behind the creative process, which I found enormously beneficial.

This is a great book for reluctant readers as the stories are so varied and a reasonably quick read. The explanations provided certainly help provoke more thought and reflection.

I'm not a writer, but if I were, this would have been the book I was in desperate need to have.

The moment I saw this book on NetGalley, I knew I had to read it. A book that celebrates the YA genre? Give me them all.
And this one didn't disappoint.

This book collects 13 short-stories in total written by New Voice writers, hidden talents ready to shine. Following each story, you get the Author's note that gives you some insights into the writing and plot planning part. And in addition to all that, there's also a little essay for each, written by Emily or Nova.
Since short-stories aren't exactly my cup of tea, those essays were what made the book for me (and I wish they had been longer).

The amount of short-stories and their size was just perfect for me, though. I wouldn't add any more and yet I could never pick one to not be part of the book.

Through the eyes of the professionals, I saw all the little details, all the tricks that made a YA story impactful. I was blown away with some of the things I read there. They put into words the feelings I felt when reading, feelings I hadn’t even acknowledged, and the reason WHY I had felt them. They gave me the answer to all my “why” questions.

Storytelling really is a magical art and it is way more complex than it seems. This book made me realize that.

I'd totally recommend anyone gets this book, even if they're not a writer. To get to read a short-story a night and then to get mind blown over what goes through the writers' mind seems like something any reader would like to read about. This will enrich readers so much- I’ll certainly be less judgy the next time I review a book!!😂

I have a feeling we'll be seeing some of these New Voice writers on bookshops shelves soon!

Such an amazing collection of short stories! Although not all of them were my cup of tea, this book really showcased the amazing talent these thirteen writers have. The stories were short and sweet, each just long enough to connect to the character. I would recommend this to anyone and the ages of 17 +. My only wish is that all the stories were catered to me(but that's just a litttleeee selfish..)

What a fantastic way to showcase YA talent! Includes 13 fab short stories by new writers, each introduced by a YA star. Plus essays and conversations about the craft by NYT bestselling authors Emily X. R. Pan and Nova Ren Suma. Essential for all who love this genre!

Thanks to the authors, Algonquin Young Readers, and NetGalley for the review copy. Opinions are mine.

This anthology was unique in that it appeals to both readers and writers. I especially loved getting to read each author’s piece (written after their story) that details a piece of their craft. Different opportunities to respond and practice these bits of craft are also included throughout the book - a wonderful touch!

I usually like anthologies as a taste of new authors, their style, etc.

However, the overly narrative style of this anthology was not to my taste. One of the most common things I tell students is that there is no right answer, which this anthology contradicts with every post-story breakdown.

Foreshadow is an anthology of short stories by thirteen incredible, diverse and lesser-known Young Adult authors, introduced by a variety of famous names. Each story is followed by a short essay by Nova Ren Suma or Emily X. R. Pan about a theme, motif or technique used within, and each essay is followed by a writing prompt on a similar theme.

I adored this collection. When I first heard about it, I was instantly obsessed, and when I started reading, that didn’t change at all. The range in these stories means that there is at least one in the collection that everyone will love, and I found myself constantly surprised by the genre variance from one tale to the next. It’s consistent in the way that each story resonates with the reader, but uses an incredible array of settings, genres and voices to achieve this. It is easy to see how every single author used their own personality to shape their contribution to this collection and it was fascinating to become so invested in thirteen different plots in such a short space of time.

I do have to admit that a couple of the stories weren’t my favourite, but the entire concept of this collection completely made up for it. I found that, even if a specific story wasn’t for me, I connected with the characters anyway and looked forward to the analysis that followed. Plus, whether I loved them all or not, I can easily say that every story in this book is edited to perfection. A few of my favourites (that were 5/5 reads easily) were ESCAPE, SOLACE, GLOW and BREAK, all of which have inspired me to check out the authors in the hope that they have something else I can read immediately.

This beautiful collection showcases the diversity that Young Adult Fiction has to offer, as well as the depth that can be achieved in a short story, which is interesting for all readers, but especially for aspiring authors. This collection made me want to open up a new document and start writing after every single story, and I haven’t read anything powerful enough to inspire me like that in a long time. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a diverse and thought-provoking collection of stories by up-and-coming new authors, but would argue that it’s essential reading for anyone who wants to be inspired to begin (or continue) their own writing journey.

The craft essays by the editors are such a phenomenal resource! I can't wait to use this book in my creative writing classes for high school students. The short stories featured here are compelling and give writers so much to chew on and examine. That, along with the craft essays and prompts, are an inviting, smart text book. I am so excited to introduce this to my students and dig into it together.

Featuring 13 short stories by underrepresented and 'fresh' voices, this book has an interesting format. Appealing to both readers and writers, each tale is followed by a short discussion focusing on an element of craft that was well developed in the proceeding story. Writing prompts/exercises are also sprinkled throughout the book, providing opportunities to apply the craft knowledge gleaned from the pages. It's an interesting approach, made more so by the exposure to new writers with such unique perspectives.

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This anthology was PERFECT. I often don't enjoy anthologies, but this one was so layered and cleverly out together. I loved all its components: the introduction by a well known author, the stories themselves, the authors notes, the analysis of how the story worked from a writing level, and the writing exercises. This is THE PERFECT anthology to use if you teach a creative writing class because it is so accessible. I honestly believe you could format an entire class structured around this book's formatting.

The concept for this book eclipses other anthologies for YA readers & writers. The selections are thoughtfully organized around well-crafted prompts, introduced by well-known YA authors, & analyzed by Suma & Pan with clarity, precision, & what is most important to adolescents navigating analysis for the first time: brevity.

While Suma & Pan cover topics like developing emotional substance & pacing, they also explore less often discussed topics that are often left undiscussed in the early literary analysts like world building—a critical component of YA fantasy & sci fi, but also critical to any story of merit as Pan indicates “But worldbuilding is just as crucial in stories with entirely realistic settings. We see this in writing that captures the sense of being lost in a big city, or the specific beauties and sounds of Appalachia, or other places readers may never have been. Few experiences are as magical as that feeling that the words on a page have teleported your entire body to another place.”

This text has a place in high school classrooms although not all texts lend themselves to whole-class study.
