I really love the illustrations on this book and the message the story sends. It's fun and cute, and would keep a child engaged and entertained. My only qualm with the book is the mention of God, but it's brief and I can probably just ignore it. It's not religious heavy at all, just a comment about how God made us, and not everyone believes in that. Otherwise the story is great and important for little minds to celebrate the differences in everyone. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book!
This was such a wonderful book. The message was fantastic, and much needed. The pictures were adorable. And the kids I read this book to loved it!
A beautiful book, celebrating the differences each of us has. Very appropriate in the current climate, and will help children understand the ways we can look different, but how inside we are all just the same. Beautiful illustrations, that match the story well, and give young readers something to look at whilst being read the story.
This is a cute, fun, rhyming book about how we are more alike than different. The illustrations were detailed, colorful, and absolutely amazing. I really liked the story but the one thing that threw me off was the talk about God. Not everyone believes in God so how can the book talk about differences but saying we were all created the same under God? Very contradictory and I think because of that there will be a lot of people who will not read this book.
This book was given to me an an ARC from the publisher through NetGalley in an exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated in any way.
We own Linsey Davis' other book, The World is Awake, which is one of my favorites. I didn't realize she had written another book, but I recognized the illustrations and typeface from the first page!
This book is so cute and a great way to introduce the topics of race and ethnicity with little ones. The flow of this book's verses don't roll off the tongue as easily as TWIA, but it's still fun and worthwhile. As usual, the illustrations are top notch! I'll for sure be adding this book to our shelves when it's published!
4.5/5 stars
Bright, colourful illustrations of an early years setting, both inside and out, present an appealing and familiar image to young children and those who will be sharing this book with them. The differences between the beautifully drawn characters celebrate their diversity with positivity, and the rhyming text has a rhythmic, musical quality with a sustained beat, like the big heart that represents our commonality. A lovely, life-affirming book to share with little ones.
The rhyming is nice and the illustrations are adorable! The message being shared is perfect. However, the mention of God prevents me from adding it to my classroom library or using it in a public school setting. I also feel that there is little diversity in the names of the students.
Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this storybook celebrating diversity with colorful pictures of children doing everyday things. Each page illustrates how our physical differences make us unique and special. A must have for all young children!
This is a beautiful book that displays the beauty of diversity. All of the kids in the classroom are different, yet they all love to have fun and smile. This book is geared towards younger children as it doesn’t delve into race or culture. But, it’s a nice book to read to the kids.
A a fun religious children's book to help children learn about diversity and the importance of love.
"One Big Heart" by Linsey Davis is the quintessential story about the beauty of diversity seen through the eyes of a child. The book is set inside a typical classroom with blending of children from different backgrounds who look and act different. However even with so many things that make them unique, is there something they all have in common?
This book is a fabulous book that introduces young kids to the topic of diversity. The book uses concrete examples of differences that children will be able to understand and then shows readers how beautiful those differences are. At the end of the book, the author brings the story full circle and notes that even though so many things are different, everyone has their heart in common. I wish that the book would have included kids of differing abilities, but I think that the book is a great first step for any family to teach respect and acceptance to the next generation. We loved it!
