Dani lives with her Aunt Carrie since her mother died 10 years ago in a drowning accident. She sees her father Johnathan infrequently. When she finds an old journal/diary of her mom she begins to read it and decided to investigate what happened to her mom. Written in alternating chapters of Dani's voice and her mother Laura's voice made the book more interesting but I didn't find the characters that likable except for Dani.

Laura made a decision that changed all their lives and I found her to be very unforgiving. Johnathan seems to be a bit of a player. A lie or lack of truth telling by Carrie and Johnathan changed everyone's lives especially Laura.
There is a bit of suspense as Dani tried to find out the truth.

My Mother's Choice by Ali Mercer is a gripping family drama that will tug at your heartstrings from the very start. Ms Mercer deftly creates characters that evoke empathy, and leave you thinking about them long after the final page is turned.

Dani is fourteen and living with her aunt ten years after the tragic death of her mother, Laura, the victim of an accidental drowning. Her father is strangely absent from her life, but remains nearby if called upon. Dani longs for the mother she recalls mostly from a single treasured photograph, and struggles to understand why her aunt and father so rarely talk about her. But when Dani finds a diary belonging to Laura that has been hidden away for over a decade, she begins to uncover family secrets that those closest to her would prefer to stay buried.

This is an absorbing story of secrets, lies, and the consequences of trying to protect those we love the most. Recommended.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC.
