This book had an interesting premise and a haunting setting but despite all that and some talented writing it just wasn't for me.
This book absolutely nails the creepy vibes!
The story could be a bit confusing at times but it felt like an intentional choice on behalf of the author in order to leave the reader feeling wrong footed.
If you are looking for a well written book with a vivid setting and creepy vibes, I definitely recommend checking this one out.
The comparisons to Shirley Jackson and Sarah Waters really aren’t doing this book any favours. It set my expectations sky high, and unfortunately this just couldn’t live up to that. It’s a short, spooky seance novel with unfussy prose and overly simple characters, leading to a vague ending. If that’s what you want, this book will provide - it’s certainly not a bad book, though it’s not a great one either. But it’s light years away from Jackson or Waters.
I did not realize this was YA before I started it. This book just wasn't for me, as I don't enjoy YA novels.
I would like to thank the publisher and the author for my advanced review copy in exchange for my honest opinion and feedback!
This book was definitely..interesting. I was on board with the premise, and the writing style wasn't hard to comprehend, but there were just some things that didn't exactly sit well with me, some descriptions and characters actions made me uncomfortable, and not in a good way. The story itself was ok, but I expected more of an adult thriller, whilst this catered more towards YA (it does have this marked as YA like, but also as adult??).
3 for neutral, as I tried to read on many occasions but I just couldn’t get into it enough to finish. While I did try many times, it could be my mood, I will update at later date if able to finish,
I was hesitant to start this book after seeing the somewhat mixed bag of reviews on this page, however, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The author does an excellent job of building tension from the start and you are on edge right to the end. I did find the ending to be somewhat anticlimactic, but this did not diminish my overall enjoyment of the book. Perfect for fans of ghost stories or abandoned buildings.
I didn’t realize this was young adult before starting, but that was fairly obvious as I dove in. Not for me.
I enjoyed this quirky gothic tale, It’s set in a Canadian boarding school and has a chilling feel to it in the vein of The Little Stranger or The Woman in Black. There is plenty of teen angst as the protagonist is 16 years old and has been striving to please the popular girl, who uses her as an emotional pincushion. Enter the thirteen year old cousin who sees ghosts and fears her dead mother is trying to kill her, mix in a snow storm and you have the ingredients of a dark and creepy little ghost story. The tale is not straightforward and meanders in such a way that I was left guessing on a few points, but overall it was a good read that I feel like I could even enjoy reading again to look for those answers.
This book grabs you from the beginning and doesn’t let go. With a slight Shirley Jackson feel at times, this isn’t really anything “new”, but the writing and pace are enough to keep you turning pages.
I thought the premise of this novel was intriguing, but I found the narrative voice stilted and the pacing difficult to deal with. Each line of dialogue in a single conversation seemed to have an unnecessary tidbit in between -- fiddling with hands, eating, reminiscence on something spooky from the Anna and Lucia's past. Too languid for my tastes! I skimmed my way through the middle and end.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing a review copy.
A chilling novel about two cousins, Anna and Lucia, connected by their ability to see the dead, and the repercussions this has on them and those around them.
This novel was so gripping that I devoured it in one evening - I kept telling myself just a few more pages until I was forlornly looking at the Acknowledgments! However, it wasn’t the supernatural element and intrigue which had me gripped, so much as the relationships between this group of characters and Anna’s difficulty in fitting in at school when she feels like she is in the shadow of her friends - a feeling so many of us have experienced at some point in our lives. The characters are flawed and dark, and aside from a few chapters in the middle which felt like they lost their way a little, this novel is utterly compelling.
Set at a deserted boarding school in the middle of a snow storm, this was certainly a very atmospheric read! Anna and her cousin Lucia both see dead people, but only Lucia is stalked relentlessly by them. Fleeing the ghost of her mother, she comes to Anna who is staying at school over Christmas with her cruel and beautiful roommate, and the best friend she is secretly in love with. When the roommate, Penelope, discovers Lucia’s gift, she decides they need to carry out a seance, with horrifying results.
This had a very promising premise, and parts of it were very effective but ultimately it ended up overblown and over complicated. By the time the climax was reached, I wasn’t all that interested in how things would turn out. I think the ending was setting up for a sequel, perhaps that would provide a more satisfying conclusion!
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC received in exchange for an honest review
A tale of hauntings, but it's not the ghosts that will make you nervous; it's the narrators hints that everything is about to go horribly wrong that will have you anxious.
Krishnasamy's writing will draw you in as the characters come vividly to life, making it nearly impossible to put this book down.
Well worth the read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Deep Dark Press for the advance reader's copy of Come When I Call You by Shayna Kishnasamy.
It's always great when you start a book with absolutely no idea what to expect and then discover that it's so good you can't stop reading it. Come When I Call You is that kind of book. Full of twists and turns that you definitely won't see coming, this book will be a pleasure to read for anyone lucky enough to discover it.
The main character Anna, attends a prestigious boarding school and has made it her business to become best friends with popular Penelope, even going so far as to skip going home for Christmas break in favor of keeping Penelope company in their empty dorm. Throw in a best friend who may be more named Ben and an unexpected visit from a cousin and you've got quite the eventful Christmas break.
For fans of ghost stories, this is one hits all the sweet spots. You won't guess the end and you may even gasp out loud a couple of times. I did, that's for sure.
Such an original gothic story!! I loved that there was a literary feel to it which seemed to focus on Anna’s observations and recollections as much as on the action driving the story forward. For me, that gave it an even creepier feel than if it had just been a straight-forward haunting kind of ghost story. I’ll be formally reviewing the book on my Instagram and goodreads accounts in August and can update this review at that time, I’d possible. Thank you for the opportunity to read Come When I Call You.
Wow wow wow. This contemporary gothic ghost story was fantastic. Krishnasamy’s writing is incredible, informal and cutting, she has a way of involving you and making these unbelievable situations relatable. Her characters were smart and well developed and I couldn’t have guessed what was going on if I’d really have wanted to. She kept me guessing until the very end; and I still have questions. Fantastic novel.
Thank you#netgalkey for this ARC. This is a ghost story/horror. I enjoyed this novel in the beginning, but didn't so much in the end.
As much as I wanted to love Come When I Call You, to me, it just fell flat. Maybe I didn't "get" it. Though I did read the entire book, I never really cared what was happening or about any of the characters. Even now, days later, as I'm reviewing the book, I couldn't tell you what a single character's name was. Sometimes we just don't get along with a book. And this was one for me.
Come When I Call You releases 6.30.2020.
2.5/5 Stars only because I didn't hate it.
I'm afraid this one was a bit too much for me, as it simply went overboard on the metaphors and the heavy tension. I didn't really feel like this one went where I wanted it to go in respect to the thrilling aspects of this book- there wasn't really enough to keep me tied to the story. I liked the concept of the cousins in the beginning and found that it had a wonderful setup, but the pay-off didn't really do it for me.
I feel like this book tried to balance being a young adult gothic novel with the darkness of a more adult book, but sometimes it becomes a glaringly young adult book, to the point where it loses any kind of gothic charm it has. I really wish that the ending hadn't been quite so predictable as well. This just really wasn't one for me!
