This book was quite interesting with all the information about snakes. My children enjoyed looking at all the different types of snakes that were throughout the book. And they enjoyed some of the information too.
I received a complimentary copy via Netgalley. This is my honest unbiased opinion.
Snakes are an animal I know very little about. I probably would have broken them down into poisonous, boas, and all the rest. But I'm also well aware that such a classification is a gross simplification. Thus my reading of this book. I think the most interesting thing I took away from this is that there are entirely classifications that remain largely a mystery to scientists. We have this idea that we have studied and understand most species. THat once they are identified there is little else to learn and that simply is not the truth. Now, this is not the book to choose if you wan a lot of detail. We get maybe a paragraph for each highlighted species, some with a photo others wit ha drawing .It's just an overview.
This is a great book for anyone who is interested in snakes. This book is the equivalent of a bird book for snakes. It has ton of different varieties the family they are in, genus, species, distribution and habitat, size, color, reproduction, diet and if it is venomous. It does have some other general knowledge about snakes. I learned the difference between venomous and poisonous snakes. It has some fun facts tucked in while you are reading the different species of snakes. I real guide for those interested in snakes.
Snakes for Kids is a science based accessible guide to snakes and basic herpetology by Michael G. Starkey, educator and conservationist. Released 16th June 2020 by Callisto on their Rockridge Press imprint, it's 79 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is currently included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free.
The first section of the book introduces snakes as a general family; their common characteristics, behaviors, and classification. The second part of the book contains a good accessible and very colorful primer of specific snake species. Each entry includes a common name, the genus and species names, a helpful pronunciation guide, a color illustration, and a stat sheet for each one with range, habitat, size, habits, breeding, and other interesting facts.
This is a science based factual guide aimed mostly at youngsters. I found it quite appealing and would definitely recommend it for the home or school library or a nice gift for an interested youngster. To appreciate and protect the future of our planet, young people have to learn to appreciate and love the creatures with whom we share the earth. A lot of ignorance and fear can be dispelled with calm and factual information. This book shows snakes in their habitats as interesting and worthy of our respect and protection.
Five stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Full review to be published online in late June.
I’ve been reading this via FaceTime with my grandson . Soon his sister joined in the reading time. They’ve both enjoyed the facts and pictures; and anything that gets them into a book and away from playing video games is a good thing.
I simply LOVE snakes! I was excited to come across this educational read about snakes aimed at young readers. Snakes are such beautifully misunderstood animals that are so crucial to our ecosystem. The overall purpose of this book is to educate and to help us understand and respect our scaley friends.
Not only does this book teach what snakes are, it also teaches about snake families, reproduction, anatomy , diet and so much more! My absolute favorite part was getting to meet the snakes. Great information was given on each one. The illustrations in this book are well drawn and informative.
This book is perfect for young nature and/or snake enthusiasts but it is also perfect for general use within a science class!
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review
