To escape a forced marriage, Russian Princess Anya fakes her death and escapes to London. When she's discovered, Bow Street Runner Sebastien Wolff, Earl of Mowbray, takes her under his protection. Even though they're from different worlds, the attraction between them is instant and powerful. Can they bridge the distance between them? And can they escape the traitor trying to kidnap her and take her back to Russia?

This is a fun read with unflagging action. Anya is strong and clever. Sebastien is skeptical about marriage but unable to resist her allure. Despite the danger throughout, the tone is light and charming, with delightful banter. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end.

Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received.

Anya secretly goes to London fashioning a new life as Annie Brown. Anya lives a hidden life as Annie. Anya also finds work and is hired as a companion for a Countess. The Countess’s nephew, Sebastien Wolff knows there is something up with Anya. When Anya’s life is threatened Sebastien is tasked with protecting her. As Sebastien gets to know Anya the secrets could destroy everything not just the fragile relationship that is building between the two but their very lives.
What a wonderful action-packed Regency romance! The story moves at a decent pace and never slows down. It really is hard not to get caught up in the masterful story. The plot twists along with fantastic characters makes the book quite a page-turner. Ms. Kate Bateman spins a tale that takes us on an extraordinary journey that not only makes you love everything but really feel for the characters and their troubles. Anya the beauteous hidden princess is courageous and strong. She isn’t scared of things even hard work or her enemy. In fact she would make a great teacher maybe she could teach everyone Russian? Sebastien what a wonderful reserved aloof hero; sure he has a temper but he still is hard to fall for. Sebastien also makes a good book boyfriend and knows how to protect when in danger. What’s not to like? There really needs to be more bow street bachelors because the stories are just that magnificent!

Oh dear, we have a problem. Anya is trying to hide from a forced marriage to an unscrupulous character and while she is doing good work at a brothel, Sebastien walks in and decides she is one of the workers. From there this is a journey of exciting escapades and sexy moments that will keep you reading way into the night. Yep, that was me. This is a fun, exciting and wonderfully written story. Sebastien never had a chance. I have read all of Kate’s books and she never ever disappoints.

It's official, anything written by Kate Bateman is now something I will be DEFINITELY be reading. I suggest reading the first two books, but this can be read as a standalone. In this story, we get to read Sebastien Wolff’s story.  This book is set in the midst of the Napoleonic Wars. Princess Anastasia Denisova of Russia is forced to go into hiding after her brother was killed and Count Petrov tried to force her into a marriage. She takes up the name Anna Brown and flees to England. When Petrov resurfaces in England, she is forced to accept Wolff’s offer of protection and accommodations. Together, they explore their instant chemistry and resolve the threat to Princess Anastasia's life.

The pacing of the book was perfect. I thought that the action and mystery surrounding Anya’s identity and the threat served as a great subplot to building the chemistry and developing the relationship between Seb and Anya. Seb is the perfect amount of arrogant yet still charming. I loved watching his hardened attitudes towards himself and marriage soften as he got to know Anya. One of my favorite aspects of the story was Anya’s grandmotherly relationship to the Dutchess of Winwick. All of the side characters in this book were great additions to the story and added depth to Anya’s character. Through these characters, I was able to see how loving, accepting, and strong she is. Anya was written beautifully with a lot of depth and heart. I recommend this book if you’re in the mood for forced proximity, sizzling chemistry, and a bit of danger.

3.5 stars rounded up. After really enjoying book 1 of this series, then being disappointed with book 2, I wasn't sure what to expect from The Princess and the Rogue (especially because the hidden royalty trope is not one of my favorites). However, I was pleasantly surprised with the book and ended up really liking most of it. Sebastian and Anya were an excellent pair -- both headstrong yet capable of acknowledging the other's strengths. Their chemistry was very well written. Anya's random trivia about Russian superstitions and traditions was interesting, though it did break up the flow a bit sometimes.

My one gripe was that the ending fell apart a bit, between Anya suddenly losing all common sense then being in multiple life-threatening scenarios. Some of the emotional revelations that came out of this were necessary for closure, but it just felt like it dragged notwithstanding the action. Overall though I enjoyed this one and am looking forward to reading more by this author.

Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley for providing an ARC for review!

A Russian princess hiding in Covent Garden as plain Anna Brown, companion to a noblewoman doing good deeds and kissing strange men in her spare time.  Sebastian Wolff, Earl of Mowbray who is hunting down Russian spies looking for a Russian connection to help him in his endeavors. Is this match made in heaven?
Wolff first encounters the beauteous Anna in a brothel and is compelled to kiss her and offer an exorbitant sum for one night with her. As it happens Anna is only doing good deeds for her neighbor by teaching the girls to read and write and is whisked out of sight but certainly not out of mind. His next encounter is when he chases down highwaymen holding his aunt's carriage hostage as they try to kidnap Anna. Now whisked behind the safety of the gambling den he runs she becomes his Russian connection helping him taste vodka and create Russian menus to entice the Russian delegation to his club all while sampling his mind blowing kisses.
Someone has certainly discovered Anna's secrets and soon she finds herself in her rightful princess role being sponsored by his aunt and feted by the town.  Her old nemesis who originally caused her to flee and disguise herself is on the hunt, determined to capture and marry Anna both to keep his secrets and to access her immense fortune.  Wolff and his friends need to be at the top of their game to keep her safe.
This is a delicious story, well paced and entertaining.

How the mighty have fallen! We meet our hero in the 2 previous books in this series, The Bachelors of Bow Street. He is very cocky, self assured and definitely against marriage. It's not for him, he will never marry.
It just takes the right woman to change his mind. Anya is a Princess, who is hiding in London to escape a Count from Russia who is trying to force her to wed him.
Anya and Sebastian meet for the first time, in all places, a brothel. She is there to teach the girls reading and writing. He mistakes her for one of the working girls. Instant attraction, instant chemistry.
All in all a good love story with a strong minded heroine and a true hero.
A great way to end the series.
5 stars

What an exciting and fast paced book ! I read it in one sitting, I just had to know what was going to happen next. Sebastien Wolf is the Earl of Mowberry , an ex-solider of Her Majesty's Rifles and part owner in The Tricorn, a gambling hell. What a guy. He is also a Bow Street Agent along with his two ex-solder buddies Benedict and Alex. He doesn't believe in love or marriage thanks to his parents.
He does love his half-brother and his great-aunt. He teased both Benedict and Alex when they fell in love with their wives. When he goes to a new Brothel, he comes across a woman that makes him see stars he wants her no matter what the cost.
He doesn't wait to find out her name or anything else. He walks straight to her and kisses her. To his surprise she kisses him back, then he finds out she is not one of Ladies of the house.
Princess Anastasis Denisove , Anya has lost her parents and now her brother to the war. When an evil Count tries to force her to marry him for her wealth and so she can't tell others he is a traitor. She and her friend flee to England and hide. She finds a job as a companion to an older lady.
Anya can't believe it when she finds out who she has been kissing. He is the nephew to The Dowager Duchess of Winwick the lady she works for.
Oh my, the plot thickens with highway men, kidnapping, and others trying to grab her and return her to the evil count.
Sebastien is told by his aunt to watch over her and keep her safe.
The attraction is off the charts between these two but will that change when he finds out who she really is ? Can a princess fall in love with a Rogue? Can the Count be stopped ?
Oh, so much going on and lots of twist and turns in this great romance.
The books in this series are all good, and can be read as stand alone. But so much better in order.
Knowing the history with the fellows makes some of the scenes so much funnier.
I received and ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am voluntarily giving it.

There are some seasons that seem tailor-made for certain stories. Who doesn’t head to the beach with a fluffy rom-com in their bag? When there’s a foot of snow out my window, I can tell you there’s nothing I love more than solving (or attempting to, in my case) cases alongside Poirot. But then there are days and lazy weekends that are perfect for sinking into the past and watching as two people from very different classes fall in love. With Matt recuperating from surgery I wanted something easy that would enable me to escape the stress of the real world for a while. Enter The Princess and the Rogue.

With her brother’s death at Waterloo, Princess Anastasia Denisova is left on her own. After learning the horrible man intent on marrying her is the same man her brother suspected of treason, the princess makes the difficult decision to flee the only home she’s ever known. She leaves Russia with a single suitcase and her dearest friend and search out a new life in England. Anya, now Anna Brown, spends her days as secretary to the dowager duchess and teaching the girls at the brothel next door how to read and write, but always remaining on the lookout for Petrov or his men.

Sebastien Wolff, Earl of Mowbray, doesn’t believe in love – no matter what his two closest friends have to say about their newfound married status. Content to lead a life of pleasure, Seb visits the brothel, locks eyes on a young woman, and is willing to offer any amount for a night in her rooms. Unfortunately for the earl, Anna is most definitely not an employee. Unfortunately for Anna, Seb is the nephew of the dowager duchess.

Anna managed to make it a year, but eventually Petrov learns of her whereabouts in England and, though he is still unaware of her true identity, Seb is convinced to take Anna into his protection and it is there that The Princess and the Rogue begins the will they, won’t they (though it’s more like when will they) and I was right there for the journey.

Though this is the third book in the Bow Street Bachelors series it’s easily read as a standalone as each book follows a different couple (and they do make appearances in this one). Not gonna lie, what initially drew me to this one was the almost kinda-sorta Romanov-esque parallels (a Russian princess named Anastasia, the royal family has been destroyed and she’s the sole survivor who creates a new identity for herself). I mean this had my name all over it from page one and it did NOT disappoint! I was completely taken with Anna and delighted in how she reacted to several of Seb’s putdowns (she might not dress like a princess, but she can play haughty like nobody’s business). In fact, ALL of the characters were really well done, from Anna and Seb to the villainous Petrov to minor characters like the dowager duchess (no-nonsense older ladies are my favorite part of historical romances!)

Despite the book’s fairly average length (just over 300 pages), there were scenes that felt much longer (the bedroom scenes, for example, seemed to drag on for nearly a full chapter) and resulted in some skimming on my end, particularly as the novel came to a close. The big showdown between Seb, Anna, and Petrov along with a MAJOR REVEAL should have had me glued to the page but… gosh, even now I found myself bored by writing this paragraph and stole away for a few moments to do some shopping (there are some amazing sales going on right now).

While I do feel several scenes could have benefitted from a page or two (or five) edited down, I really did enjoy The Princess and the Rogue. From the Romanov-esque whispers of the plot to the multiple fantastic and easy friendships found throughout its pages, this truly was a delightful read (if a teensy bit too long). Now that I have already met Seb and the now-married Ben and Alex, I’m eager to dip into the first two books to uncover their days as, well, Bow Street Bachelors.

This book disappointed me, especially given the other ratings. I started skimming pretty much from the beginning, and eventually gave it up as it was clear that it wasn't going to become a book I enjoyed.

The writing wasn't particularly smooth and was the first strike against it. The next was the characters I couldn't connect to or care about - in fact, they just irritated me. Then the cartoonish characterizations, improbable events, and unbelievable insta-lust. It became very clear very quickly that this is just not a book that I would enjoy.

I'm sure plenty of people will enjoy it - it seems plenty of other people do, from the other reviews. It's just very much not for me.

Sebastien Wolff, Earl of Mowbray, stumbles upon Anya in a brothel of all places. When he attempts to engage her services, Anya tells him she's not a worker there. What she didn't tell him was that she was the Russian princess Anastasia who went missing a year ago in Paris. When Seb foils a kidnapping attempt of Anya, he agrees to protect her at his Tricorn gambling establishment. Anya feels the undeniable attraction between the two of them, but refuses to tell him who she really is. When he eventually discovers her identify, he feels betrayed by her secrets. Can they finally get beyond the betrayal and confess their love for each other?

This is the 3rd book in the Bow Street Bachelors and I was looking forward to reading Seb's story. I loved Seb. He was so loyal and competent although his constant scowling got a little old. As far as Anya is concerned, I had mixed feelings about her. She is supposed to be a smart young woman and yet she runs away from Paris with only her maid and a few jewels. Being a princess why wasn't there guards or advisors or anyone who could protect her from Petrov? That was a big plot hole for me that there wasn't anyone she could turn to for help. I absolutely loved the dowager. She was a hoot!

Wow, even though I don't mind the "Anastasia" re-imagined because it only has some slight similarities...trust me this story does go into a whole new route that made it new for me. Everything this was great with the imagery, the characters and I just love how Seb was when he was with Anya. This one really was very different than the others in the series and it was nice to see some of the other characters pop up.
This cover is really pretty as well and fits with the answer Seb gives towards the end of the book! I look forward to more of Kates books!

I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

A Russian Princess in hiding, Anya, sets up her fake death and establishes herself as a lady's companion in London Her true adventure begins while heading to the country with a Dower Duchess. Sébastien to the rescue as kidnappers attempt to take Anya.

Anya ends up at the Tricorn with Sébastien, his gaming hell, under his protection. Where sparks start to fly. Can either of them resist?

I loved the story line, the characters were established enough to keep my attention. This is the first book I have read by Kate Bateman and I will definitely be back for more.

Sebastian Wolff, Earl of Mowbray doesn't believe in love until he kisses a beautiful stranger in a brothel. The woman is involved in intrigue surrounding the Russian princess Anastasia Denisova, who had been hiding in London as Anna Brown. She needs help to escape a traitor, but the proximity between them only deepens their attraction. How can it work?

The Princess and the Rogue is the third of the Bow Street Bachelors, following This Earl of Mine and To Catch An Earl. It's not necessary to have read those first, though it's fun if you did because the heroes of those novels and the heroines are mentioned as they rib Sebastian on his bachelorhood. He isn't used to having a woman say they're not interested, and Anya is the first woman to deny him despite her attraction to him. It doesn't help that they meet in a brothel where Anya is teaching some of the girls to read. She isn't the whore he thought she was, but ultimately needs his protection when it becomes obvious that the traitor after her in the opening chapters is still tracking her down a year later. Stuck together, it gives more opportunity for them to get to know each other, kiss, and figure out more about the traitor.

Anya and Sebastian get along well and have the same goal in mind. Of course, their desires get the better of them, and danger, as well as duty, wind up separating them. Our happily ever after is still assured, with hints of other pairings at the very end of the novel. The Princess and the Rogue was a lot of fun to read, leaving me grinning as much as the characters were. I really enjoyed the book, as I did the prior two in the series.

This was a great story to close out the Bow Street Bachelors series.

In this book, Princess Anastasia Denisova fakes her death to avoid a disastrous marriage. By pure chance she meets Sebastian Wolff - the Earl of Mowbray - and with one kiss their lives are changed. Whether it's for the better remains to be seen...

I very much enjoyed this book. The characters were well developed, and the dialogue witty. Although it's the third in the series, I think it stands on its own with enough reference to the first two to avoid any confusion.

I highly recommend this book if you you're a fan of romance, intrigue, and gaming dens.

Great book! I loved the characters Anya and Sebastien. I don't normally enjoy books with Russian characters. I don't know why, but other than Doctor Zhivago they just don't appeal. And I normally don't care for princesses either. Anya was a different story. I could appreciate her point of view and she made an interesting princess, willing to work hard and not prissy. I loved all the references to a wolf in Russian stories and to Seb (Wolff). The characters had meet-cute in a brothel of all things and it worked great. The author built the feelings and changes in the characters at a perfect rate. If you like historical romance, you will love this book.

I really enjoyed this novel- the plot was predictable but that’s the beauty of historical fiction. You know the general outline but it still leaves you feeling happy when the couple finally gets together. It’s a perfect light read when you want to escape “this crazy year” for a little while.

This was a quick and enjoyable read with a fun premise (princess in hiding?!). The heroine was strong and spunky, and now that she's in humbled circumstances, she realizes how spoiled she used to be. Given the danger the heroine was in, it felt ridiculous to have the characters return to London and continually be put in situations where she could be recognized (and was!). Some parts were farfetched, but that's what makes it fun and escapist.

The Princess and the Rogue is the second book in the Bow Street Bachelors series by Kate Bateman. A historical romance that is full of heated drama, family, and undeniable chemistry. The mixture of action and romance in this novel makes for a swoon-worthy romance you will not want to put down. The Princess and the Rogue is a fast-paced read with intriguing characters who share a chemistry that is off the charts. Once you read The Princess and the Rogue, you will want to read the next book in the Bow Street Bachelors series.
