What a delightful read! There's so much excitement, action, suspense and, oh yes, sensuality in this story. The storyline flows quite well and I very much enjoyed the fun dialogue. It was great following along with Princess Anastasia Denisova, Anya and the Earl of Mobray, Sebastian as they overcome all odds on their way to their HEA. I especially loved all the Russian customs mentioned and followed in the story.
This was a sweet, spicy, funny romance. It hit a lot of my YES's for a great story. The princess-in-hiding was especially well done since this princess had layers to her hidden identity. There were tropes...of course, there were. Romances depend upon them.
The hero was not so Alpha that I wanted to shoot him.
The heroine was not so spunky and "do it myself" that I wanted to shoot her too.
The balance between them was lovely. I like a relationship that shows the give-and-take between two adults.
Bateman will go on my "gotta check that out" list. She has a deft hand for telling stories that bring me emotional fulfillment and a happily-ever-after that doesn't cause my eyes to roll out of my head.

Bow Street agent Sebastien Wolff, Earl of Mowbray has eschewed all ideas of love and a marriage based on anything more than convenience and producing an heir. Even though his two brothers-in-arms have found true happiness with wives of their own, Sebastien has no intention of following their lead. When he meets an enigmatic and beautiful stranger in a house of ill repute, Sebastien is immediately and intensively attracted, determined to ferret out who this woman is and find her again after she rushes away.
Russian Princess Anastasia Denisova fled to London after a devastating loss and near assault by a odious man who wants to own her. She has been living in hiding as a nobody, Anna Brown, companion to Sebastien’s irascible dowager aunt and befriended by the brothel owner next door. Known as Anya to her family, she has been helping the women learn to read and write so they can make better choices for a living than selling their bodies. Sebastien mistakes Anya for one of the “ladies” initially propositioning her and following with a steamy kiss.
When Anya is nearly abducted again by the man who has trailed her from Russia, Sebastien offers her protection while they try expose a traitor from Napoleon’s war. The man they suspect is the same one after Anya who will stop at nothing to steal her away. While living together, their mutual attraction intensifies though both are quite resistant. In the beginning, Sebastien does not realize who this compelling young woman truly is and once it is revealed, he is less than pleased thinking himself far from suitable for a princess as the owner of a gaming hell and his questionable legitimacy.
Anya’s Russian superstitions and folktales play an entertaining part in this story. This is the third in the Bow Street series. Fans of Regency Romance will enjoy this story especially those who have read the first two though this book can be read as a standalone.
Deliciously romantic and fun, this is a book you will want to escape with. This was a clever plot with complex , engaging characters.
Many thanks to St. Martin’s Press and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
I’ve never read anything by Kate Bateman before but I am a fan now of her storytelling. Both provocative and intriguing, “The Princess and the Rogue” had me turning pages into the night. I liked the hero and heroine, as well as supporting cast. Bateman has more of a modern feel in her prose than I expected for a Regency Romance. Still, I enjoyed the escapism. Easy to recommend.
Anya ran from Paris to London to escape a villain who wants to force her into marriage and suddenly ends up under Seb’s protection. Unaware of who she really is, he seduces her and takes her virginity. Danger is lurking and it eventually finds her. The story is beautifully written with strong H/h characters full of romance, danger and an unexpected surprise. I enjoyed the story and would highly recommend it.

Princess Anastasia (not that Anastasia) needs to reinvent herself after finding herself without family and being pressured to marry. Fast forward a year and the kind but privileged princess becomes Anya a strong lady’s companion to a serious curmudgeon. Sebastian Wolff is the last bachelor of his trio of friends. When he meets Anya in a slightly awkward situation little does he know the strength he sees inside of her has to do with her regal training. While they never expect to see each other again soon Anya will be depending on Wolff to protect her life. The tension between these two simmers to a boiling point but is balanced by the highly likable nature of both leads. This is part of a series and you will see many familiar faces but you do not have to read the others to enjoy this book, although I do highly recommend them. While these historical characters have to deal with typical historical differences such as class distinctions the book intertwines it with humorous supporting characters, lovely superstitious stories and a sexual tension that will have you grabbing for a fan. The author has a way of making a historical romance funny and hot with just the right amount of sweetness, but not be too stuffy with the historical nature. I am hoping for a future book featuring some of the new characters as I can’t seem to want to let these guys go. 5 stars must read. I received an arc copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher for my honest review.
Another outstanding Regency romance!
The opening prologue sets the stage beautifully for what will become an enthralling story filled with action, romance, hard times and steamy hot scenes that culminates in a stunning HEA. We see exactly why Anya and her friend, Elizaveta, had to flee Paris and take refuge as paupers in London. Set just after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, the vividly detailed history lets the reader experience the turmoil through Anya's eyes.
A year later, we catch up with Seb, Alex, and Ben, our Bow Street Bachelors (though Alex and Ben are very happily married now). Seb is convinced he doesn't want what they have, and prefers his freedom to enjoy as many women as he can. Until one fateful night when he meets the disarmingly beautiful Anna Brown, a woman who has no trouble resisting his persistent advances. Soon their connection through her employer thrusts them both into each other's pockets, as the threat she ran from in Paris has finally found her in London and Seb is the only one who can provide the kind of protection she needs.
Whew! This story takes off like a rocket and never slows down! Anya is as determined as she is regal, feisty enough to keep Sebastien on his toes yet charming enough to have the Dread Dowager Duchess backing her every play. Secrets are layered on top of more secrets, and surprises await around every corner. I absolutely adored the attention to detail, especially regarding the Russian language and customs, and I could feel the chemistry between Seb and Anya right from their very first meeting.
This author has become one of my all-time favorite authors with this series, and I cannot recommend this romance highly enough. There are happily ever afters in store for quite a number of couples by the end of this story, but none of them outshine the glorious conclusion for Sebastien and Anya. If you read historical romance at all, you don't want to miss this one. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Some HRs are all about the seduction, ensuing romance, character conflict, and then the happy ending. Some add intrigue, mystery and/or suspense. Bates’s Bow Street Bachelors Series has a nice combination of it all.
Like the previous books, The Princess and the Rogue involved one of three aristocratic friends who served together in battle during the Napoleonic Wars. They now run a popular, high end gaming house, as well as work as Bow Street Runners for the Crown. Each mystery has been linked in some capacity to Napoleon with this story concerning a Russian traitor and a missing Russian princess.
I enjoyed this book much more than the previous book, but not as much as the first in the series. This story started out strong with a riveting prologue that pull me right in and kept me reading. I really enjoyed the mystery and suspense, but I didn't feel as strong of a connection to the romance. I had liked Seb in the previous stories, as well as in this book, but the romance felt a little odd after a potentially inauspicious first meeting. Definitely, not a meet-cute. The climactic ending was very entertaining, even if it was precipitated by a senseless decision by the heroine.
The epilogue was sweet (if a little silly) and I enjoyed how the author brought all of the main characters from the previous books together for one final scene.
I love a good, raunchy romance and this fit the bill perfectly. I loved how the plot brought the two leads together in such a fun way and it really was an enjoyable read from start to finish. Not a hard read at all and goes by smoothly.
“Nothing really matters except people. Not things. Not possessions. People. Life is worth living because of relationships. With family. With friends. With lovers…what really matters is love.”
Russian Princess Anastasia Denisova has found herself the victim of a powerful man with the intent of marring her for her wealth and to make sure his secrets stay hidden…no matter the cost. Along with her best friend, Anya flees in disguise to London, where she becomes “Anna Brown”, and becomes part of the working class. Thinking her disguise will never become known, Anya is surprised when the very thing she feared begins stalking her…and she finds help in the most unexpected way…
Bow Street agent, Sebastien Wolff, Earl of Mowbray, has vowed never to be tied down to just woman. Preferring the talents and passions of ladies in brothels, Seb stumbles upon a woman like none other he has ever seen. Knowing he must have her, Seb offers her to set any price and he would gladly pay it for a night in her bed. Little does he know, his wolfish ways are about to come to heal under the hand of an ice princess…
OMG! OMG! OMG! To the moon and back I loved Kate Bateman’s newest installment to the Bow Street Bachelors series! Although this is book 3, The Princess and the Rogue may be read standalone. Highly recommend!
**I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. **
Excellently crafted! Anya is a princess in disguise. Her life is like a fairytale. Sebastian is the only one of his friends left single and is still enjoying that status. From the moment these two meet sparks fly. The story is exciting and adventurous as Sebastian tries to uncover Anya’s secrets while trying to protect her. As danger lurks, they can’t help but fall in love. It’s interesting to watch Sebastian melt under the bravery of Anya.
This was an ok read. It delivered on the main things I'm looking for in a historical romance, even though the storyline itself stretched even my generous suspension of disbelief. I enjoyed reading it, but didn't feel a deep connection to any of the characters, or overly invested in the story.
Loved Sebastian’s story!! We follow Anna Brown aka Princess Anastasia Denisova as she flees from danger, faking her death and starting a new life for herself in England. As Anna and Seb are thrown together they try to unravel the mystery surrounding a bow street case and Anna’s past.
The chemistry between the two is intense and deep. I love the way the author slowly builds the relationship between the two of them until it is all encompassing. The way things came to a head and were resolved was fast paced and wrapped up all loose ends tidily. I can’t wait to see read more from this author. Her writing flows well and is engaging from the first word. If you love historical romance with a dash of mystery and intrigue you’ll love this.
Hands down one of the best books I've ever read....This book had it all...Hero..Heroine...Drama....Intrigue. Happily Ever After...I can't wait to read more from this Author. There are tons of Historical Romance books out there and Kate Bateman has just added her name to the top of the list for me... I would give this a 10 if I could.
The Skylarks Secret is a duo storyline that begins with Lexi Gordon returning to the Scottish Highlands following the death of her mother, Flora. After returning home to try and start a new life with her daughter, Daisy, Lexi learns that she gets her strength and resiliency from her mother and finds out more about her mother in her death, than she knew in her life.
The story goes to Flora as a younger woman and her endurance and survival of WWII.
With breathtaking descriptions of the Scottish countryside and story of hope and love, The Skylarks Secret was a beautiful story that had me captivated instantly. The only reason for my 4 star review, and not 5 stars is I feel to some degree, that most Historical Fiction books have found this trend of having the dual storylines, where they flip flop back and forth only to find out they intertwine with one another at the end. While I don't mind it, it's becoming a bit repetitive and a little lackluster for me. But that's my personal opinion.
Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my review and honest opinion.
I loved the first two Bow Street Bachelors books and the third, The Princess and the Rogue, did not disappoint. Each of them can be read as standalones but I recommend you read them all since the featured bachelors are friends and make appearances in each of the books.
Princess Anastasia Denisova came to London as Anna Brown in order to escape the Russian traitor on her trail. Sebastian Wolff is coerced by his aunt, the dowager duchess, to ensure Anna's security. Like the other ladies the Bow Street Bachelors are attracted to Anna is a strong independent woman that intrigues Seb at every turn. As their attraction grows so does the uncertainty of her safety.
What occurs between the sheets by these two is fan worthy!! Kate Bateman is a master at writing steamy scenes and tantalizing moments. Highly recommend for those who love historical fiction.

The Bow Street Bachelors Bowled me over !!!. This was Seb and Anya's book and it was jam packed with just the right amount of heat, suspense, intrigue and twists. We start our tale with a rather harrowing escape by Anya and then fast forward and catch up with her life from Russia to London. I found her and Sebastian's first meeting hilarious and was cheering Anya on to leave him in her wake with a cheeky smile !
From there it was a joy watching these two become entangled in each others lives. Add then our wicked villain and the story heats up as Anya and Seb not only start to ramp up their passion but Anya certainly has to keep out of the clutches of Petrov. Can Seb help keep Anya safe and will her omissions about her past be the end of their growing relationship. Yup, you guessed it...you'll have to read it and see xx
From start to finish a great read. Would definitely recommend !!
Many thanks for this opportunity and well done Kate xxx
Later peeps xxx
The Princess and the Rogue by Kate Bateman is another fun romp with the Bow Street Bachelors. This time Sebastien Wolff meets his match in Anna Brown, a beautiful young woman who is acting as his grandmother's companion, but isn't who he thinks she is, which he discovers when escorting her to his grandmother's home, they are attacked and the attackers attempt to kidnap her.
Wolff offers Anna his protection at his gambling hell, but the quarters prove a bit too close comfort. Don't miss this last episode of the Bow Street gents!!!
Thanks to the author, St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
This was a great read! A historical romance full of action and adventure. Brilliantly wrote to keep the reader entertained from beginning to end. A love story of a beautiful Russian princess and a British Rogue.
Can’t wait to read more from this author. Thanks Netgalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
