3.5 stars I can't round up because the whole foreseeable and yet forced drama at the end that had the otherwise very sensible heroine do something incredibly stupid
I think my biggest problem is that what I loved most about the other two books is missing here: the sensible heroine, who is strong and independent without being pushy and annoying, and her partner in crime she learns to trust. In the first books, there was a give and take between the couples, with both of them learning how to work together as a couple.
Here, we have a princess all on her own, almost killed in the aftermath of Waterloo, on the run from someone who is afraid she has proof he is a traitor to his country. I liked that she had no problems trading in her luxurious life for that of a paid companion, that she had hard choices to make and had to actually work to survive. I really admired her, up to the point where the evil Russian count catches up with her for the foreseeable closing drama. My biggest problem is that, unlike the other heroines in the series, she doesn't trust the men she met enough to confide in them and to come up with a solution together, and instead runs headfirst into danger. It seemed so out of character to me for the otherwise perfectly reasonable Ana.
I also didn't like Seb as much as the other two men. They were a bit more fun. Seb is the usual hardened cynic who watches his friends fall in love and finally gets his comeuppance in the form of his own little whirlwind who turns his ordered life upside down, or, in the words of the boys:
"I thought it was irritation at first," Alex said with a reminiscent smile. "I wanted to throttle her." Benedict chuckled. "Well, then." Seb crossed his arms. "I'm still waiting to find that gorgeous someone who irritates me enough to want to strangle her."
I still love the friendship between those three. But Seb on his own without the boys around was a bit too brooding for my tastes.
I still enjoyed the friendship that Ana and Seb formed under the strange circumstances they find themselves in. But the drama towards the end was just too predictable for my tastes, and I ended up skimming a bit.
I would still recommend this series to anyone looking for historical romances that are a bit different: we have heroes who *gasp* work for a living and only were awarded their titles after the war, heroines who are courageous and do not have the cushy, comfortable, sheltered lives most HR heroines have, wonderful friendships, a lot of bickering, and couples who actually communicate! Some more than others, but still. It makes for a wonderful change from the genre, at least for me.
This is the second book I've read in the Bow Street Bachelors series. And just like the previous one I enjoyed every page.
When the book starts with our heroine destroying a priceless piece of jewellery with a hammer, it's a pretty good sign to me that here's a woman with gumption - my favourite kind.
Anya, a Russian princess, is forced to flee Paris. Rather than fall apart, she picks herself up and gets on with her new life in London. Making new friends next door (hilarious) and avoiding old enemies as well as her employer's grandson.
Sebastian is on a hunt. To find proof about treasonous activities and most recently to hunt down the interesting woman he kissed in a brothel. He just needs to attend to his grandmother first.
A lovely story: much fun to read.
“It’s protocol. I outrank you. There are rules.” The Princess and the Rogue by Kate Bateman
Yet another arc I’ve to post about even though I read it last August. Anyway, here now it is.
3.5 stars. Seb’s is the last story in this trilogy of regency gentlemen who actually work undercover with the police. And he’s gotten involved the mystery Anya, who is actually a Russian princess. Which is interesting to me. It’s nice how unique each of the ladies are in this series.
Not sure how accurate the traditions are depicted in this book, but one of the best parts of the book is Seb going thru a gauntlet to get to Anya.
Thank you St Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the arc of the book. I enjoyed it.
Oh, how the mighty fall. ❤️ Seb’s story!

I think Bateman hit the mark with these three best friends and developing the stories around these guys. They are humorous and definitely don’t let their buddies get away with anything. I love their loyalty and camaraderie and have just really enjoyed the series.
This story is about Sebastian. He’s the grouchiest one, I think. So it can only be right that he gets taken down by a princess.
The best part of the book is just the unique flavor that the author brings. This is not a run-of-the-mill story loaded with drama and chatter, Bateman works hard to craft entertaining, sexy, and unique stories that suck you right into a time warp.
The characters are perfectly crafted and I just love the slow to burn development of feelings. We even have a touch of suspense to keep it interesting too.
With some twists and turns, Bateman develops a wonderful story you can get lost in which includes a little bit of everything. It’s no wonder that I have enjoyed the series so very much. I hope this is not the end. However, I am thinking we might be seeing a few of these characters again soon!
Awesome Read!
Sebastien Wolff, Earl of Mowbray, is a Bow Street agent. Anastasia Denisova is a princess on the run form an unwanted and dangerous suitor. She’s in London as Anna Brown helping the girls at the brothel learn to read and write. They meet one night at the brothel and share a kiss. It soon becomes apparent that someone is looking for Anna so Sebastian offers to let her stay at his gaming establishment. They work together to solve cases and soon are very close. Sebastian learns Anna’s secret and they develop a plan to catch the traitor.
Great chemistry between the main characters and a lot of humor mixed in. A good read for any fan of historical romance.

REVIEW FROM BOOKS FOR HER:
Princess Anastasia Denisova has escaped Russia and is hiding in London as a ladies companion called Anna Brown, when she accidentally meets Bow Street agent and Earl of Mowbray. When Anna's life and lies are in danger, the earl is the only one you can help and keep her safe.
The third book of the Bow Street Bachelor's novels, The Princess and the Rogue was fast-reading and fun. So good, I want to read the first two books, Bateman's final novel in the series is equally adventure packed as it is romantic.

Yay, another Bow Street Bachelors story. After the other two Rogues, Benedict and Alex (To Catch an Earl) found the loves of their lives, Sebastien Wolfit alone. He doesn't believe love is in the cards for him, although his aunt, the Dread Dowager seems to think otherwise. Although, Seb can't help but ponder about the passionate kiss he shared with the mysterious beauty at the famous brothel. Only to learn, that the woman wasn't working at the brothel and disappeared after their kiss. When he promises his aunt to guard her during her travel to her summer house, he finds the carriage being robbed already upon his arrival. And who stumbles from the carriage? The mysterious woman!
As a maid to the dowager, Anya tries to build up a new life. Having fled Russia, after the death of her brother to avoid a forced marriage, Princess Anastasia Denovitsia has been hiding as plain Anna Brown in London. But now it appears her wanna-be husband has found out she is in London.
Although she doesn't trust men (they are always after her name and fortune), she grudgingly accepts help of the handsome nephew of the dowager.
As they try to find out who is behind the attacks and how much the Russian know, Anya realizes that not all men are unloyal or brutal. And Seb may finally understand his friends' frustration with women.
Another great read from Kate Bateman, full of suspense, twists and turns and a lot of laughter. A story with an historical twist. I loved it! Five out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.
Enjoyable historical romance. Handsome, brooding hero, beautiful heroine who needs saving. More interesting than many of this genre.
Ms. Bateman did it again! I love the characters in her books, they all seem to have sass and spunk. This book hooks you from the beginning and doesn't let you go until the very end. Really this entire series is that way.
Bow Street agent Sebastien Wolff, Earl of Mowbray, is an intelligent man who thought love wasn't real, until his friends fell one by one head over heals for their wives. Sebastians still didn't believe he would be bitten by the bug though until he runs into Anya. Princess Anastasia Denisova (Anna Brown) is a strong independent woman who is doing what she has to in order to stay one step ahead of the bad guy.
I recommend this book to all historical romance lovers.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book even though there were some things that I didn't understand in it. One was I wondered why she just couldn't ask from money from the lawyer back in Russia. She said that she contacted him at one point--yet she faked her death and tried to hide? It confused me and I spent most of the book wondering about that.. In spite of that it was a charming book.
Being the third book in this series wasn't an issue. Kate kept the story fresh and exciting with a little steam thrown in for fun.
This was just the type of Cinderella story I was looking for. The character's chemistry is electric! I really enjoyed the supporting characters too.
I'm not typically a fan of love at first sight but Kate made this work. I was convinced. The action is fast paced with a few surprises thrown in at the end. One of them I did not see coming at all!
If you are looking for an easy to get hooked into historical romance with fun character -this is your next read!
Thank you to NetGalley for an advance copy. All opinions expressed are my own.
The well written storyline and the well defined characters made this book a very enjoyable read! I look forward to reading more from this author!
I received an ARC of "The Princess and the Rogue" by the fantastic author, Kate Bateman and Netgalley. What a fabulous story... the third in the series, but one that can definitely be read by itself as well. Seb and Anya, two people, magnetically drawn to each other, while fighting the mutual attraction due to class differences and a little bit of deceit. A must read for historical romance readers, and anyone looking for a great story.
I enjoyed this story about the third Bow Street bachelor, Sebastien. He's definitely feeling alone as his two friends have met and married their true loves and moved out of the gambling club apartments. He isn't planning to meet the same "fate" having been burned in love as a young man. Until one day he meets a very beautiful annoying woman, Anna, who wants nothing to do with him. Fate, in the guise of his great aunt, throws them together again and he becomes Anna's temporary protector. Of course nothing is ever simple as this woman has her own secrets which threaten her life and those near and dear to her.
The Princess And The Rogue...OMG...I couldn't read this book fast enough! Kate Bateman gets another check on my list of books I'm glad I didn't miss. The characters in this book are magnificent! You can't help but love them. This well-written book is the story of Princess Anastasia Denisova as she and her companion go undercover to escape an evil Russian. Sebastien Wolff, Earl of Mowbray, owner of a gambling den and investigator for Bow Street gets tangled in the tale when he rescues his aunt and Anastasia from kidnappers. Their story is packed with drama, humor, sizzle, action and suspense. I loved every page of this book and can't wait for my next book by Kate Bateman. The Princess And The Rogue is book 3 of the Bow Street Bachelors Series but can easily be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Princess and the Rogue turned out to be the perfect pickup read for the weekend. Sweet and steamy, the book was the perfect combination of spitfire heroine and swoon-worthy rogue to keep the pages flipping way past my bedtime. Princess Anastasia Denisova and her companion fled to London on word of her brother's death and the attempted forced marriage from scoundrel Petrov. Working as a lady's companion to the Earl of Mowbray's great aunt, Anya manages to meet the Earl in a brothel for the first time. Sebastien Wolff, Earl of Mowbray, gambling hell owner, and Bow Street runner, knows that Anya is hiding something but her kisses drive him mad. The story becomes a wild ride of passion as Seb's and Anya's HEA is hard fought and danger ridden. Excellent characters and a charming tale will place this book firmly on my to be re-read shelf and adding the author's other books on my to be read list. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.
Another amazing book by this author I always know I’m in for a great read when I get one of their books. I really enjoyed this one so much. I felt like I could see it playing out as I was reading. The storyline was captivating and engaging. The characters where well written and believable. I can’t wait to the next book by this author

The last bachelor falls, and falls for a princess no less. Great story and romance. Loved how Seb/Wolff and Anastasia relationship evolved. The final steps he had to go through in order to marry her was great.
Anya is hiding from someone from her past and a hansom guy names Sebastian offers to protect her. For me this was a first read by this author and I enjoyed it. The characters are great and there is a lot of chemistry between them. The plot was fun too.
