I enjoyed the previous book TO CATCH AN EARL a LOT and when I saw that THE PRINCESS AND THE ROGUE was about one of my favourite tropes ever "The Princess falls in love with her bodyguard" I was even more excited to read it.
My enjoyment was worth 4 stars but the whole story is probably a 2/3 stars read. It was hard for me to like Sebastien as a hero because he was constantly thinking about Anya in a sexual way. It wasn't like there were a lot of sex scenes but his thoughts were too sexual and it gets really tiring to read about a hero who only thinks with his penis. Because of that I didn't buy the romance, yes they had chemistry but their relationship felt like it was based more on lust than love.
Aside from that I really enjoyed the secondary characters, there were a lot of scenes with Sebastien and his friends that made me laugh out loud.
Even if I wasn't a fan of Anya and Sebastien as a couple I enjoyed reading this book, I was on a reading slump when I started THE PRINCESS AND THE ROGUE and I could get into the story since the very beggining.
TO sum up If you're looking for a fun and sexy historical romance THE PRINCESS AND THE ROGUE is for you but if you're looking for a slow burn romance you won't find it here.
I very much enjoyed reading this book and I loved Anna and Sebastien. I really cannot wait to read more books from Kate Bateman in the future.
The Princess and the Rogue
Bow Street Bachelors #3
Kate Bateman
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Sebastien Wolff is not only the Earl of Mowbray, he is also a Bow Street agent who doesn't believe in love until he shares a kiss with a beautiful stranger in a brothel. However when the mysterious woman is linked to a missing Russian Princess he starts to wonder if she may have been too good to be true. Now he's got to dig deeper and investigate what may be going on.
Princess Anastasia Denisova lost her brother and went into hiding. Now she's just plain old Anna Brown. And with the dangerous traitor that wants to make her his, hot on her heels the best option for her is to accept Wolff's offer of protection and safe accommodation at his gambling hell. Now that they are living so close to eachother and she is aiding Wolff with his Bow Street cases she is starting to feel an attraction and is afraid because if her true identity is revealed will a romance between them stand a chance? Is it even possible for a princess to marry a rogue? Or will the lies pile up and be too many?
Kate Bateman is a genius. This book was fabulous. The attention that Ms. Bateman put into her book was incredible. There were times that I felt like I was standing there in front of the character she was describing. From the height that Sebastien was to the tiniest laugh lines on his face. It was all there. Anya was such a sweet, caring lady. Together they had such passion that you could feel the heat. I read alot of books, but have now found a new author to follow. This is definitely a 5 star book in my opinion. I would recommend this book to historical romance readers everywhere.
The Princess and the Rogue, is a great book.
Princess Anastasia Denisova is hiding in London as Anna Brown.
Sebastian is a free man, who doesn't believe in marriage.
One kiss, that's all it takes, that he is reconsidering his vows.
I loved Anastasia and Sebastian, they have great chemistry.
I'm so happy, that I got opportunity to read this book.
I really enjoyed this book. I love the whole princess in hiding plot. Seb was a great hero. I enjoyed the banter between the hero and heroine. I would definitely read more from this author!
I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is book 3 in the Bow Street Bachelors. I was excited for Sebestian’s story but I was allitle disappointed at how much of a jerk he was at times. I did like the story though overall a fairly decent read.
The Bow Street Bachelors by Kate Bateman is a series you won't want to miss, and in my opinion, the author saved the best for last. The Princess and the Rogue was a historical romance dreams are made of.
Sebastien was a swoon-worthy hero: grumpy, yet loyal and protective, and cynical about love until he met the woman who changed his mind.
Anya was an amazing heroine. While she was a princess and could have been the pampered and privileged kind, she was actually quite resourceful and independent with plenty of fire.
Together the two of them were both wonderful and torturous; they were fiesty and kept each other on their toes, and then the attraction and slow-burn between them was enough to make me weep. I loved it.
Of course, there was some mystery and intrigue thrown in for good measure, appearances from characters of the previous books, no overbearing drama, the list goes on. All in all, it kept me flipping pages into the wee hours when I really should have been sleeping.
I can't wait to see what Kate Bateman comes up with next.

In The Princess and the Rogue, we follow the final 'Bow Street bachelor', Sebastien Wolff, as he meets his match in hidden princess, Anastasia Denisova. Anya is hiding in London, living next to a brothel no less, after her brother Dmitri was killed at Waterloo, and the wicked and traitorous Count Vasili Petrov claims he will marry her, no matter what, so she can't use Dmitri's evidence against him. Finding a job as a dowager duchess's companion, she is finally happy, but when a handsome stranger propositions her in the brothel, thinking she's one of the girls, and then it's revealed he's the dowager's grandson, and the Earl of Mowbray, Anya's luck just might be running out. Seb is drawn to Anya, and when she is nearly abducted while travelling to his grandmother's estate, he becomes her protector, and finds himself falling for her - still not knowing her true identity. When the truth is revealed, will Seb still be willing to help, and can they stop Petrov from his wicked aims, once and for all.
To say I love this series would be no lie. I binged the entire trilogy in the last week or so, and have found myself falling in love with Kate's stories and her characters. This time around, it's no different, and I found Anya a complete breath of fresh air. She's feisty, and won't take anything lying down, and was extremely resourceful. Considering she's a princess, and cousin to the Russian Tsar, you wouldn't expect to find her in Covent Garden's, teaching prostitutes to read and write, and working for a living, but she took what life had given her, and worked with it. Being propositioned by Seb in the brothel was not in the cards, but she couldn't hide her attraction, especially not when she was taken to the Tricorn Club for her protection. Her and Seb clashed, and picked at each other, but like Alex and Ben told Seb, you need to find a woman you can't be without, but also makes you want to strangle her at times. Really, they were perfectly made for each other, and were one of the best regency couples I ever read. It took Seb a little longer to accept his fate, having fought against matrimony for so long, and lambasting his friends for their love, but he couldn't deny his feelings, not as the action ramped up more and more. The plot twist and climax of the action took me away, and I'm so happy with how the entire series has ended. Here's hoping Kate has a new book out soon!
Unique plot, memorable characters. Kate Bateman delivers with her signature wit and historical details--this time delving into rotal Russian culture. A fantastic read that was a joy from beginning to end.
This book had me hooked and completely invested from the start! Something about Kate Bateman's writing had me so engrossed as I was reading I was on the edge the whole time waiting to see what was going to happen!
This story had mystery, suspense, intrigue, and a whole lot of passion and steam! I adored Anya and Sebastien, both as individuals and together! The chemistry and tension between them was honestly everything I need. I also really love the way this story worked in actual historical facts and aspects to help us get a better understanding and setting of what time period this is set in. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and can't wait to read more from Kate Bateman!
I really enjoyed this story! It had captivating characters, good dialogue and loads of heat. Plus, the plotline was entertaining. I read the whole thing and found a new to be read author in the process.
Thanks Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Great book! Anya is a Russian princess in hiding and Seb agrees to protect her even though he doesn’t realize she’s the princess - she tells him she’s her companion. Lots of intrigue and romance in this story of the Bow Street bachelors. This is my favorite of the series!
Thanks to the publisher for a review copy via NetGalley.
really liked it. It was a lovely, quick read. I learned I can count on Ms. Bateman to deliver a good, sweet historical romance. I could not put this down but that's not to say there aren't some elements of the story that could have been better. I had some difficulty getting into it the first 3 chapters or so but later the story picked up and I got engrossed. It was little slow to get started but it kept me engaged and wanting to read it until the very end.
I really liked Ms. Bateman's dialogue writing. It’s sharp, fast-paced, and thoroughly witty from beginning to end. It was honestly a joy to read. Anya is a strong, flawed heroine who is fascinating to read and Wolff is a typical historical romance hero who makes us love the genre in the best ways. I loved these two characters, as individuals and as a couple. The chemistry and repartee between them was excellent. I loved the richness of the characters and the story line. And the ending made me happy. The supporting characters are also all entertaining and delightful to read.
So overall, if you ever need a book that'll satisfy your need of happy ending then this is it.
Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC of this book. Opinions are my own. This was a fun book to read. There's some action/adventure, spy intrigue and of course romance. The hero and heroine, Sebastien and Anya, are sweet together.
I really liked Anya- she's a tough Russian Princess in self-imposed exile (for weird reasons). She has to learn how to do things herself and make money in her new homeland.
Sebastien is less of a whole character, but he's well dressed, super good looking and rich, so, ok? Ok! His aunt is a feisty old lady who definitely needed more "screen time."
This is not a strict historical romance... There are some (slightly) anachronistic feminist rants (which I enjoyed) and less fussiness as regards to social norms of men and women being alone together. I didn't mind it at all, as it helped move the plot forward.
The plot was a little extra complicated for me. She's trying to get away from a Bad Guy, so she hides in Sebastien's gambling establishment. But then he needs some help on the floor spying on Russians, so she goes. Guess what? She gets found out and she's literally no help. See, a little overly complicated, no?
Aside from that, I did enjoy this book. There are some fun moments between the MCs and the ending is just HEA for everyone. Cute.

Bateman concludes her series with a deeply complex and emotionally charged darkness with this love story of a princess and a second son. What should have been impossible is discovered to be destiny. Wolf finds his heart in the fiery conviction of Anastasia, a princess finding her identity in her assumed disguise. The most compelling aspect of this story is the sheer determination of the duchess to see her nephew settled, and the loving teasing of their friends and family. It's adorable.
Anastasia Denisova is a Russian princess in hiding. She has established herself as a companion to a dowager duchess in London. Eighteen months earlier she had to run away from a forced marriage from one of her country men. Sadly she had learned her brother had been killed in the battle of Waterloo. Her brother had shared with her a while back that the same gentleman (who was trying to force her into marriage) was under suspicion of treason. She is now living modestly (after selling her tiara) near a brothel. She's made friends with the lady in charge and some of the girls that worked there She offered to help the girls learn to read and write with the hopes that they would make a better life for themselves.
Sebastian, Lord Mowbray is a Earl and a Bow Street agent. He enjoys his single status. Recently he's become irritated with his fellow friends and comrades when they tease him that he needs to fall in love. He would never admit to his friends that lately he's felt a little off and out of sorts, like somethings missing in his life. He's a confident and wealthy male that is able to get pretty much whatever he wants, he shouldn't be feeling this way.
Well Sebastian decides to visit a brothel one evening, the night that Anastasia is scheduled to assists in the girls learning session. He see's Anastasia and there is instant attraction. He assumes she "works" there and the two have a very interesting and heated interaction. Anastasia tries to set the record right but Sebastian finds her a captivating and intriguing. He can't seem to forget her. A situation arrises where he needs to assist he Aunt. The situations becomes a rescue, the rescue of not only his Aunt by Ana.
Sebastian's Aunt request that he keep Ana under his protection as she is in danger. Ana doesn't reveal who she is but gives half truths. Sebastian takes her to his gaming hell that he and his other two friends all co-own. The two get to know each other and slowly develop a friendship of some sort. Sebastian is a stubborn male who is suspicious and knows that Ana is not telling him everything. Ana is finding herself developing feeling for him and admires his character and work ethic.
The truth of who Ana is and who's after her are revealed to Sebastian. He's not too happy but he learns quickly that he cares for Ana and wants nothing to happen to her. They develop a plan to catch the person or persons that are after Ana and committed treason.
There's some action as well as romance in this novel. I liked both the hero and heroine and their character development. I loved the grumpy, alpha male of Sebastian. Ana was strong but sweet too. But I did find some of her actions a little out of character for a princess. Her behavior was not really appropriate for the time period at times. Pretty outspoken and forward thinking. Also her and Sebastian's love scene was out of character, from Ana's stand point I think for a princess/virgin. I understand that she had friends that worked at a brothel and they "told" her things, I still feel she was way to confident, adventurous and forward in that scene.
The pacing and writing was good with some exception. I found the introduction a little over the top and a little cheesy. Also the scene of Sebastian rescuing of his Aunt and Ana was pretty predictable and pat. I would also have loved an epilogue a couple years later of their lives together. But all in all this was an enjoyable read.

3.5 stars. Anya, a Russian princess flees Paris to avoid a forced marriage to a traitorous countryman who thinks she has incriminating documents. When her location is discovered she ends up accepting the offer of protection from Sebastien, Earl of Mowbray. He is Bow Street (special police) agent who is looking for information about a Russian traitor who cost lives at Waterloo. Of course there is instant attraction and peril.
There were many things to like in this book. The cover was eye catching and fit the story. The main characters were very likable. Anya was independent, loyal and not judging of her brothel neighbors. The Earl had a good backstory. I especially liked his banter with his two friends who were the leads in books 1 & 2 of the series. The other side characters, Anyas friends and the dowager duchess added to the story. I also enjoyed learning about Russian superstitions and traditions.
The book stands alone but I would have gone back and read the first two if they had been available at my local libraries. (I access to four different city libraries and none carry this author.) I did have a couple of negatives. Since Anya was able to write to her lawyers to say she was alive why couldn't she have discretely arranged for money to be sent to London. Also I seldom criticize the steamy scenes (often skimming them), but I thought it odd that Seb couldn't imagine that she was not experienced when he had to give direction and talk her through so much of their first time. And then the next time seemed a bit rushed and rough after she had been abducted and heavily drugged. My detractions made me round down to three stars.
I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Sweet and very romantic story, that I really liked, and now the Rogues trio is made of married men and I wonder if this is going to be the last book in this series...we will see....
Molto carino e romantico e ammetto che dei tre é quello che mi é piaciuto di piú e ora il trio degli scapoloni é diventato un gruppo di uomini sposati e mi chiedo se questo sará l'ultimo libro di questa serie....staremo a vedere....
THANKS NETGALLEY FOR THE PREVIEW!
I loved this novel which is the 3rd in the Bow Street Bachelors series. I love strong heroines and Anastasia is definitely that. All the characters in the novel were wonderful and I hope to read more on their stories in the future.
Kate Batemen is quickly becoming my favorite historical romance author! The Princess and the Rogue is a fast-paced story that keeps the pages turning.
Disguised as Anna Brown, Princess Anastasia Denisova, is on the run from a traitorous villain intent on making her his wife. Employed as lady's companion to the Earl of Mowbray's aunt, Anastasia's life collides with Mowbray's, first when he spots her at her neighbors (a Covent Garden brothel), and next when he rides to her rescue as she and his aunt are being attacked by kidnappers.
Jaded after years of work as a Bow Street agent, Sebastian Wolff, Earl of Mowbray, doesn't trust Anastasia further than he can throw her. After all, he met her in a brothel and even propositioned her, only to discover that she and his aunt are thick as thieves. Something's not right. His investigative instincts are on high alert. The last thing he wants is to get more involved with the chit, yet that's precisely what happens when his aunt deposits Anastasia in his care.
An impossible romance between a man who doesn't think he will ever be good enough for a princess, a princess who yearns for freedom rather than marriage, and lots of danger on both their heels creates a truly enjoyable story. One I would highly recommend.
