I received an ARC via NetGalley in return for a review of this book. I've been reading this series since its inception, sometimes waiting impatiently for years for the next novel. While I'm sorry to see it end, I am happy to report that it was a slightly surprising and entirely satisfying wrap up. If you haven't yet met Alex Craft, start at the beginning with Grave Witch and settle in for a great ride.
Sad to see this series end. It has been one of my favorites.
The book opens with Alex having taken over as the lead investigator for the Fae Investigation Bureau after Falin ascended to the throne of Winter Court as the new King. Her first day on the job all hell breaks loose and she's thrust into chaos. Things go from bad to worse with the fate of Faerie in Alex's hands. Can she come up with a solution before magic disappears from the mortal world and all the Fae fade?
Grave War tied up many loose ends and answered many questions that had been left hanging throughout the series. However, I felt the story was rushed and left out many favorite characters that had played key roles throughout the series. Most major characters only got a quick mention, including Death. Having played such a major role in the earlier books I had hoped to see more of him, even if they did "officially" break up.
In the end, I was both surprised by a few revelations and satisfied by the happy ending. There's plenty of room for more stories in the future if Price ever decides to resurrect the series.
I received this book for review from the publisher via Netgalley.
I was excited to see this book pop up in my NetGalley because I love the way the author skews every trope just enough to make me smile. I didn't realize it would be more than another juicy, wonderful chapter in Alex Craft's complicated magical life. It's a juicy complicated SERIES CONCLUSION.
The various plot lines could have used a wee bit more resolution than one book can possibly provide, but I was well pleased with how things turned out--pleased enough that I would pick up a follow-up series in a heartbeat.
The loveliest thing about this book is how effortless it was to read it--there was enough recap that I didn't feel lost (even though it's been long time since the previous book) yet none of that information felt forced or slowed down the story. Plus in the end, everything comes together in a beautifully satisfying wrap-up that does NOT erases all possibility of future, new stories. It hit the perfect balance--for me, at least.
When I went to mark this a read on Goodreads, I saw that a lot of people gave this a lot of negative reviews. I was shocked because I enjoyed this book. I am glad that, after reading them, I realized why I was not having the same reaction. I had not heard of this series until I received my ARC through NetGalley. I have to read a series in order so I binge read the first 6 so I could understand this book. I can understand that a lot of people were frustrated with how long it took to get this book.
Coming into the series like this I enjoyed it. It was an interesting world and magic. I loved the character development. This was a great conclusion to the series. There were no surprise moments or plot twists that make you want to continue reading. this was not the purpose of the book though. This book's job was to wrap the series up and it did that. I feel complete leaving this world.
The final installment of the Alex Craft series, Grave War, starts off with a bang. Or a boom--the doors between the human world and Faerie have been bombed, the trees that housed them irrevecobly damaged. Alex, as the new head agent of the FIB, must investigate, but things quickly become even uglier than she expected--fae trapped on the human side are fading, and many of them are independents who don't have an actual court in Faerie to call home anyway. Alex quickly makes finding a way and a means to transport all of the trapped fae back to Faerie her priority; unfortunately, this leads to an incident at the Governor's office that puts Alex herself on the wanted list. With deceptions and betrayals around every corner and not a single good lead besides some vague promises from the Shadow Court, Alex is running out of options--and so is Faerie itself.
That all sounds really interesting. It's a great plot, but the first 2/3 of the book are pretty much just Alex running around like a chicken with her head cut off and running into more problems. There are a few incidents of actual problem-solving, but primarily she just gets lucky. At the end, all of the loose ends wrap themselves up together in a nice little bow in about two chapters.
Certainly, I will still be in line to read whatever Kalayna Price dishes out next--Grave War did not ruin this series. It just didn't really live up to the potential that has built over the years.
Alex is back in the 7th and finals installment in the series. Say it isn’t so!! She goes out with a bang. Literally! Grave War is full of action, romance, and lots of SURPRISES. I really enjoyed this series and will miss this cast of characters. Well worth the sleepless night reading!
*ARC is provided may NetGalley for an honest review.
Full review in late November.
I remember when I read the first few books, I was so into the series. I loved the characters and the story line. As the wait between books began to span YEARS, I just kind of stopped caring. I know that things happen in people's lives, and I'm not saying anything bad about the author. I am saying that I lost interest in the series. When I got this one, I wasn't too sure if I was going to read it, but I had to have closure. I'm a masochist like that.
I'm glad that I read it, but it took me so long to remember past plots and to get back into the feel of the story and characters, that I kind of found it boring? Confusing? Exasperating? I don't know, I just didn't LOVE it is all. Don't get me wrong, the book falls inline with the other books as far as writing and content is concerned, but I guess that I just lacked the enthusiasm needed to really enjoy a book.
This was a fun series that wrapped up in a satisfying fashion. Grant you this wasn’t a series that’s exactly a great classic of literature but if you are looking for a light urban fantasy with a side of romance this series is a good choice. The heroine is enjoyable, the two love interests are hot and villains suitably dangerous. I had fun reading this series and the author did a good job in entertaining the reader.
Great conclusion to this series. I definitely did not see this ending coming, and enjoyed how it played out. I will miss the characters, and really hope the author revists the world either as a spinoff or as a short story at some point. There were definitely some loose ends, but nothing that affected the overall plot line.
I've always enjoyed this series, and this (what I believe is the final) book continues to deliver. It did feel a bit slow going through parts, but I was blindsided by the reveals at the end. After I finished this book I was reflecting on how Alex has changed and grown throughout the series. That's the mark of a good character.
The final book in a very good series doesn't disappoint. Most readers won't be surprised by the revelations in this book, but they are good nonetheless. The story is wrapped up and I feel an appropriate sense of closure.
As series endings go, it was...fine? I mean, there's a happy ending slapped on to the end of a storyline. But Alex spent most of the time making really dumb decisions, and failing to think things through, and you don't get to spend much time with any of the rest of the series characters, and there are a few Big Reveals that don't end up meaning much of anything and some hanging questions that never get explored or resolved. It reminded me a bit of the ostensible final book in Kim Harrison's "Hollows" series (before the recent reboot).
Alex is trying to adapt to life. She is dating the Winter King and is now the agent in charge of the FIB. When the door to Faerie is destroyed, she has to figure out how to help the Fae. ARC from NetGalley.
This is a great conclusion to a very favorite series. While I'm happy with the ending and really enjoyed the story line, content, and writing, I am a little put off with how long the wait between books has been. I had to do several re-reads on the previous few books to remember the plots and characters. Now that this is a completed series though, it will be a nice one to be able to recommend to our patrons.
Oh my goodness...what a terrific conclusion to this series. I've loved this series from the beginning and it's maintained it's momentum through every installment. I am really sorry to see it come to an end. I am curious to see what Price comes up with next though!
I've been a fan of the Alex Craft urban fantasy series from the beginning. Alex began as a grave witch PI getting called in to assist with official investigations. As the final book, Grave War begins Alex has discovered she's fae, has a castle in fairy, and her boyfriend, Falin, has been chosen as the Winter King. Alex is preparing to take Falin's position in the mortal world as the lead investigator for the Fae Investigation Bureau. Life should be good.
And then an explosion at the Eternal Bloom threatens everything. While the Bloom appeared as a bar for mortal tourists to see exotic fae, it's deeper purpose was to provide fae like Alex and her friends with a doorway into Faerie. Now that the door is destroyed with no way to restore it, they're cut off from Faerie and they'll start to fade and die.
Even worse, Alex discovers that it's not just the Winter Court's door at the Eternal Bloom that's been destroyed but all of the doors into Faerie. Not even on the job for a month, and she needs to discover who's destroying doorways to Faerie and how to save the other fae stranded in the mortal world. Will she see Falin again?
Kalayna Price gives a high-stakes, fast-paced adventure to conclude the series. She neatly and satisfyingly resolves series plotlines without feeling rushed or contrived.
If you haven't, start at the beginning and read the entire series.
Thanks to NetGalley and Berkley for the DRC.
