Lady Rose Callanach is excited to be allowed to leave her home and travel with her uncle and cousin to their country home. Unfortunately, the Black Death changes her fate. She is left for dead by her uncle and has been placed upon a mound of other victims of the plague. Tristan MacPherson is known for death-he is an assassin for hire. He rescues Lady Rose without asking her true identity. As he escorts her home, he suddenly realizes that her father’s name is on his list. The more he converses with Rose and she with him, they both fall in love. Tristan’s dilemma – admit who he really is to Rose or leave and walk away from her. But, there is another question: Who killed her mother and why do they wish to kill Rose? A great love story with a dash of mystery!
Lady Rose Callanach’s life has been one of protected isolation by her father. Kept inside with guards to protect her, especially after the fire that damaged her legs, and the murder of her mother, mother’s maid and burning of their bodies, her father protected her from life. Now she is going with her uncle and cousin to spend the winter with them. On their travels, Rose is infected with the Black Death and her uncle leaves her to die. She is about to be burned alive on the death pile, a man saves her when he realizes she is still alive. Tristan MacPherson, a hired killer, could not leave her to die in such a fashion. I was so engrossed in this book by the time Tristan rescued Rose, that I could not put it down. The mystery that continues thru this book, keeps you deeply connected. Thank you, Paula, for a wonderful adventure into Tristan and Rose’s lives.
This book was awesome! I was thrilled to be able to read Tristan's story. This book was intriguing, sweet, romantic, sad, and happy. There were a few nail biter scenes. I could not put it down. I enjoyed the main and side the characters. I hope Jones gets a book. The whole series has been great and I hate to see it end. I've enjoyed many of Paula Quinn's books and recommend her as an author.
I received a free ARC of this book form NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I have been a fan of Paula Quinn and her writing for a long time. As a matter of fact, Laird of the Mist was my first toe dip into Highland Romance and I haven't looked back since then. I went into reading Tempest Heart with a certain expectation, having loved all of her previous novels and novellas. Let me be completely honest, this book was FANTASTIC! You can't help but fall in love with Tristan. He had my heart from the beginning and his very first meeting with Rose.
You can read this as a standalone, but I would highly recommend reading all of Paula Quinn's books. You will not be disappointed!
Entertwined in this dramatic and suspenseful novel, rampant with betrayal and intrigue, is the sweet love story of Lady Rose and assassin for hire, Tristan MacPherson. Having rescued Rose from what was to have been her funeral pyre, Tristan discovers that he is unable to leave her behind, even at the risk of becoming infected by the Black Plague. The hardened warrior believes that he is above paltry emotional feelings, but that was before his encounter with the guileless Lady Rose, who is experiencing her first taste of freedom since she was a little girl. Her inquisitive nature initially drives him to distraction, but after a while, he cannot help but be charmed by her. As the plot escalates and Rose is put in further danger, Tristan realises that his heart is no longer his own, but before he can fully claim Rose as his own, he has to eliminate the threats to her safety. This well-written novel keeps the reader engrossed throughout, with the pages turning faster and faster towards the end. I loved Tristan's taciturn character and Rose's sweet and inquisitive personality. Together, they complement one another and become a force to be reckoned with. This novel is a standalone and when the truth finally comes out, justice is served. I received a copy of this book as a gift through NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Tristan MacPherson is an assassin, a paid assassin who kills evil men for money. Men who have harmed or killed and not punished for their crimes. Lady Rose Callanach lives locked up in a castle. Once she is given the opportunity to leave she doesn't want to go back to her prison. With the plague sweeping England, Rose is accidentally exposed. On a pyre for the dead, Tristan saves her and nurses back from near death. As love grows between them Tristan becomes a changed man, until the threat from someone close to her endangers her life. Twists and turns keep your interest in the story and a hero who defends the woman he loves. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
Two isolated, lonely people fated to meet each other. Tristan saves her from death. She saves his soul.
Tristan is the son of Cainnech and Aleysia, both warriors at heart. Tristan is raised learning to fight and defend ones family and property. After being at war for a while, Tristan leaves but cant settle his fighting spirit, so he turns to vigilantism. He is paid to meet out justice where the law fails. He earned a certain reputation, and as a result leads a very solitary life.
Rose is raised in total seclusion. Her father protects her from someone who is out to kill his family. But she is a sweetheart whom everyone loves.
This story was sad yet hopeful. I did have a hard time with Tristan's killing people so easily. The back and forth of his being a vigilante and then a hero was a little confusing. I didn't know whether to like the man or not.
I liked the story of Tristan and Rose. Her goodness and love quiets his fighting spirit, just as it did for his mother and father.

I want to thank Netgalley for the chance to review this book.
Tempest Heart (Hearts of the Highlands Book Five) by Paula Quinn
Paula Quinn delivers a action packed adventure drama with twists of romance along the way! This book surpasses my expectations of a series especially the fifth! Usually by the third or fourth one they are struggling to keep there sizzle! Paula Quinn kept a constant spark between the characters and there is even a hint of a sixth book that sounds exceedingly promising from the teaser clues!!
Tristan MacPherson is a paid killer, but was raised to be a man with morals and integrity. He only assassinate those who have done evil. He will not kill women or children. He comes from a loving Scottish family and was raised in the church faith .
Kate Callanach was isolated by her father after someone tried to burn down their home and she was scarred on her legs from the incident. A few years earlier her mother and a maid were killed in a carriage accident and as a result of these two things her father keeps her locked and gated behind a giant wall! She has no friends and no visitors.
Finally, her uncle comes to visit with her cousin and they finally convince her father to let her leave to go to the uncles home because the Black Death is further from his keep.
This plague is so deadly it can wipe out the whole village. The plague is like our Covid19 you have to wash your hands and they didn’t know basic cleanliness. While traveling to her uncles they were in an Inn and a man who apparently had the plague spit up blood all over Kate! Her uncle was terrified and left her there alone! Soon the town was exposed and everyone was dead and the kings men came in to burn the bodies! Kate was barely alive and Tristan was traveling through and he saved her and nursed her back to health. Tristan did not realize that Kate was one of the men on his list to kill daughter!! This is where the book takes a turn you won’t even begin to imagine!!!
The author’s narrative had so much inflection that I had goosebumps with anticipation for the next chapter to see what was going to await Tristan & Kate!
Writers are like sculptors with clay in they have to keep molding that lump and that’s how they develop each chapter! The end result is the epilogue and this particular story you won’t be disappointed!! The body of this book is so intertwined with adventures & impassioned with developing personalities that there is no way you can not be gripped by the emotional facet that explodes off the pages!!!
I received a advanced copy from netgally and these are my words and thoughts!!!
Will him saving her life be the redemption he is in desperate need ...
The more I discover the many authors from Dragonblade Blade, the more I think it is a resource base for awesome historical romance writers.
What an epic this one was, a road movie combined with a mystery to solve.
The historical area was not one for the faint, it was ruthless and gruesome, yet among all the horrors, there were those chivalrous knights, and while Tristan is no knight in shining armor, he still has a code of honor despite his line of living, no woman nor child would come to harm through him.
By why did he stopped by this city and rescued Rose, it is a twist of fate.
Born and raised to be a warrior, he lost himself in the abhorrence of war, why he became a killer for hire, it was more fair to kill guilty culprits than innocent men on the battlefields to the whim of some royalty.
Yet when he stopped by Rose’s barely breathing body, something strange stirred in him, while dying, he could not let her exhale her last breath alone. And she didn’t die.
Rose has spent a big part of her life hidden behind walls, caged for her security, but still imprisoned. And when her first outing turns out to be a death party when they cross the Black Plague on the road, she never expected to meet a man while very faraway from her romantic ideal to be the one man she will reveal in.
He is a man of the shadows when she is a woman for the light. Yet, they meet in the middle as she smooths his demons when he gives her strength.
I would like to thank Mrs Paula Quinn for this awesome tale of second chance and resilience. Her heroes while not perfect are even more lovable because of said flaws, from Tristan’s ruthlessness to Rose’s gullibility as each complement the other.
5 stars
I was granted an advance copy by the publisher Dragonblade Publisher, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
Lady Rose Callanach is left for dead having contracted the plague. Yet when Tristan MacPherson saves her life, she finds herself eternally thankful. However, Tristan is not all that he seems. A killer for hire, he believes he is removed from all feelings, until Rose comes into his life.
This is definitely not your typical romance, with Tristan’s role as a man contracted to kill others. With many dying at his hands, it was fascinating to read of Rose’s perception of him and likewise, Tristan’s response to her. With Rose’s gentle probing, it was interesting to see Tristan gradually reveal his profession to her and his relationship with family. Whilst this is part of a series, this book was definitely a stand-alone novel. Overall, a good read!
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Tempest Heart has one of the most unique and gut wrenching first meets of any HR book I have ever read. As the synopsis says (so no spoilers) the heroine Rose has the plague and has been thrown into a plague pit, ready to be burned alive, when hired assassin extraordinaire Tristan MacPherson comes to her rescue.
Yes, I had to read the blurb a couple times, and yes, the heroine has the plague (she recovers quite quickly and nicely). Very timely for 2020, lol. Tristan is also well ahead of his time, diligently wearing his mask and frequently washing his hands.
But I digress.
There's a lot going on this is novel, yet there's a simplicity to the writing. A very large body count; more than I've ever read in an HR before. There is no shying away from the atrocities that Tristan deals out, even if he is only hired to kill "bad people." Rose has been sheltered for the majority of her life, and honestly, especially at the beginning, she didn't seem phased much by seeing all the bloodshed first hand. She talked and asked questions incessantly, and got Tristan to open up immediately. I did like how he didn't try to hide his profession from Rose, they were open with each other pretty much from the start.
They have some adventures on their journey and there are a few twists saved for the end of the book. Both have had a horrible upbringing and life, and when they find each other they have found the one they can save and the one worth living for.
Can be read as a stand alone.
Thanks for NetGalley for an ARC of this book, the opinions are all my own and freely given.
Tristan and Rose were great.
The angel and the devil.
Rose has been locked away her whole life. Tristan gets paid to kill men who have hurt others.
I wasn't sure how Tristan would win me over, but he did.

I recieved a free copy from netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Rose is going to stay with her uncle when she is infected with the Black Death. As she is about to be burned alive Tristian arrives and saves her. Tristan doesnt understand why he saved her when he is a killer for hire. Quickly Tristian gives into all of Rose's desires. As they start to care for one another, Tristian's status as a killer comes to haunt them both.
I didn't want to put this book down. Tristan is easy to like even though his profession is to kill people. He only kills the guilty and never harms women and children. He also unwittingly becomes charmed by Rose and will do anything to make her happy.
Rose has led a isolated life, sequestered from the outside world due to her father's enemies but even having been left to die she finds joy in life and the food in Tristan.
I loved Rose and Tristan as a couple and they completely deserved their HEA. Can't wait to read more by Paula Quinn.
This is my fair and honest review, voluntarily given and in my own words, for this ARC. Quite a long tale. I did find it a bit difficult to read with ease. It just didn't seem to flow.
Lady Rose Callanach has not been outside her father's castle for six years because the person who killed her mother is probably after her as well. Her uncle has at last persuaded her father that she will be safe with him and her cousin.
Tristan MacPherson is a legendary assassin known for bringing justice to those who think they are above the laws of decency.
The black death is ravaging the land wiping out whole villages, everyone is scared of catching it. Sometimes they take extreme measures to stop the spread.
This is an emotional and action packed story filled with vicious battles and danger for everyone. Our unlikely hero will have a life changing experience. Our brave, but incredibly innocent heroine will learn that not everything she has been told is true.
A very exciting book that is part of a series but easily read on it's own.
I loved it.
I have received an ARC of this book by NetGalley and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I had heard of this author, but I had never read any of her books until now. After reading Tempest Heart, I am sure that I will read all the previous ones and a few more. I love books with Highlanders and this author seems to be the queen in that area.
It was difficult to drop the book after I started reading it. The interest grew with each page and the connection with the characters too. The writing was engaging and captivating. I really liked how the hero and heroine connected and how the author expressed it in the story. Tristan and his troubled past and present and Rose, with all her life locked up and fears of freedom.
It was a beautiful, engaging and an interesting story that made me even more curious about the whole series itself.
Tempest Heart (Hearts of the Highlands Book 5) by Paula Quinn .....Loved this book...it kept me on pins and needles the whole time. It has all the feels...danger, suspense, violence, so many twists and turns, tears, laughter, steam all leading to a very HEA.
Tristan MacPherson is a cold-blooded killer on his way to take yet another life. He doesn't expect to come across Rose, a lass beset by the Black Death and left for dead - and he doesn't expect to fall in love with her or discover that she is the daughter of the man he intends to kill.
Oh, I loved Tristan. He's a Medieval bad boy with a heart of gold and even I fell for him. He and Rose were so adorable together. I also thoroughly enjoyed all the twists and turns in this one; the mystery of who was trying to kill Rose kept me guessing right up until the end. Tempest Heart had a bit of a Tangled feel (a charming hero freeing the heroine from a life of captivity!), so if you love that movie you'll probably love this.
This book is full of twists and turns; but in a really good way. I loved that it wasn't the typical romance book that I can guess what's going to happen next. I couldn't put it down and the characters were very well developed. I cant wait to read more from Paula Quinn.
Tristian turned to being a hired killer after the war. But he only kills bad people the law cant touch (governor, earl etc) Men fear just hearing his name; and is known to be the silent hero of women as most of the men he kills is to rescue a women held captative.
Rose is 20 but since the death of her mom when she was in her teens she has been in her castle guarded by 14 men and not allowed to leave. She survived a fire at the age of 8 and her dad is very protective over her. Her uncle convinces her dad to allow her to go with her cousin to London. When they pass through a town she and her 7 men are inflected with the plague and left for dead. Her men are dead and she is laying a pile of bodies about to be burned alive when Tristian sees her. At first he just wants to comfort her as she dies; but as she gets better, she grows on him. He feels drawn to her but fights all temptation as he feels he's evil due to his occupation.
They must lean on each other to face her past; which involves his next job. The villian is unexpected and I absolutely loved how it all turned out. You can see how the characters grow through the book and its just beautifully written.

The perfect knight in shining armour, only this one is a Highlander.
Skilled and trained to kill , he can track and scale trees and buildings.
A Highland Warrior of the highest calibre, part of the McPherson Clan, and an assassin who always get the man he’s after.
A lady who’s live half her life imprisoned behind the walls of her fathers castle, but she just wants to live and love.
Her mother is dead, murdered.
Her father is obsessed with her safety.
And now she’s at risk from the most deadly disease to ever cross Scottish border. The Plague.
These two have a beautiful chemistry and passion from the beginning.
There’s a spark between them that you can feel all the way through this book.
It’s wonderful.
I loved the plot and the twists, and there are a few of those that will have you guessing I guarantee.
Definitely need more of this series.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
