Slow-moving and dense with world building and small details. Characterization remains excellent, with Yala, Kai, and Takshin really emerging as the key players, despite: Yala’s foreign birth, Takshin’s being adopted out of the succession, and Kai “only” being an adopted son. The story isn’t as weighed down as the first book and it shows in plotting and the story’s relatively shorter length.
