I really liked the creativity of the story.
This is a compelling mystery from the beginning. I enjoyed the alternating perspectives. I was emotionally invested.
A great read, really kept me on the edge of my seat. I kept thinking I knew the outcome but was surprised by the twists near the end.
I flew through this book, with a well-thought-out plot and really believable characters. would definitely recommend it!
This book was a slow burn until around the 3/4 mark when things picked up a bit and the mystery started to unfold. Up to that point, the reader is getting to know these women who have been brought into each other's lives seemingly by chance. Separated by decades and very different pasts, Gloria and Beth begin to form a friendship after Beth rents a vacant field on Gloria's farm to park her tiny house. Chapters are written from both women's perspectives and told in the present and in past tense as we slowly get to know each woman and what brought them to this point in their lives. After two local women are murdered, everyone seems to be a suspect. Is this a mystery the reader won't figure out before the end? No. There are clues along the way that make things fairly easy to guess, but it's still a fun read getting there.
Laura Wolfe is a new author to me and one I'd definitely read more from!
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was my first time reading a book by Laura Wolfe but it most definitely won't be the last. I was gripped from the beginning and couldn't put it down. I couldn't wait to get to the end to find out what happened to the two characters involved, but didn't want it to end either! Highly recommend and look forward to her next book.
This was a slow burner, it wasn’t quite what I expected it to be but I really enjoyed it: Widow Gloria rents her field out to Beth, a young woman whose husband died in a boating accident. Beth parks her tiny house in the field and then the mystery begins.
We learn Beth’s story bit by bit, alongside Gloria’s regrets over her estranged son.
When artist Joe moves into the apartment near Gloria’s house and a young woman is found dead, their imaginations run riot;
An entertaining story, with some good twists in it.
Two Widows was one of those books that I thought would be one thing but ended up being something else. I expected a typical psychological / domestic thriller. I got something between a suspense / mystery novel and contemporary fiction.
The suspense / mystery came from the death of local women in town, which has Gloria feeling anxious – especially when she chooses to rent out an apartment above her garage to a stranger who likes to come and go in the middle of the night. It’s hard to believe it could be anyone living locally who would want to kill the women – which makes the outsider the obvious choice.
Of course, Beth is an outsider too – but as a woman Gloria is much more accepting. In fact, she welcomes Beth with open arms and lets her rent a space on her farm for her tiny house. Yes, Beth seems to behave in ways that can’t be described as anything but odd but Gloria is sure there is a reasonable explanation – especially because she likes Beth and has started to see her as a friend.
And Beth’s story is where the contemporary fiction comes to mind for me. There were elements here that reminded me of Diane Chamberlain and the way she slowly reveals her character’s secrets. For people who were looking for pure mystery / suspense and lots of twists, turns, and – maybe – a bit of blood and gore, this is probably a disappoint. For me, though, it was a lovely – and welcome – surprise.
I really enjoyed Laura Wolfe’s way of writing and weaving a story that put her characters front and centre of any drama. They felt very real, something I need in a book. Which meant I found Two Widows a really enjoyable read. My only complaint? It felt a bit rushed at the end. I would have liked a slightly slower conclusion.
That’s it though. Other than that – highly recommended.

A gripping read that will keep you up at night.. My first Laura Wolfe story and I'll be back for more!
I really enjoyed this title. It was interesting and kept my attention. I really liked the way Laura Wolfe told the story and I will be recommending this title.
This was a great little suspenseful mystery. It kept me guessing, and it still had a feelgood quality to it. It wasn't disturbing like some other novels. I enjoyed this read and would read more by this author. I received a free copy of this book from netgalley and the publisher.
A fascinating, page turning thriller with a unique plot that kept me intrigued throughout.
Perfectly paced, full of suspense and with twists you simply don't expect.
A definite must read!
This was a page turning thriller with a very clever plot. I really liked the mysterious set up and the many clues.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
If this is the debut novel for this author I can't wait to read what she has coming next! I was captured by the idea of how two widows were drawn together at the same time that a murder just so happens to occur in a small town. I stayed for the captivating character development, complex relationships, and twisted mystery.
It is often said there is safety in numbers. A truth that comes all too swiftly in this tale of two different people tied by death. A traveler renting space on a lonely stretch of land. A true independent and a women use to being alone and self sufficient. The discovery of a body pushes the two to join forces and resolve the mystery at hand.
With a large house and land to spare, Gloria brings in two renters. What initially makes her feel safe (having people around) and comfortable soon makes her questioning her decision when a local woman is found dead. Who could be capable of murder?
What started out as slow was just the author's way of building up the story. Once things were set in motion, it was beyond difficult to put it down. This was the first book I've read of Laura's but I'm definitely eager to see what else she writes.
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to read this and give my honest opinion.
Gloria has taken on two lodgers: Beth, a freelance journalist whose trailer is parked on her land and Joe, a painter currently renting the spare apartment over her garage. For a while everything seems fine, until their behaviour begins to make her suspicious. A local woman has been murdered, the killer still at large. Gloria thought their company would make her feel safer. Now she’s not so sure.
Two Widows is written from both Gloria and Beth’s perspective. As with all good psychological thrillers the truth is not as straightforward as it seems. It was a little slow to start but as I got deeper into the plot I found it difficult to put down. A compulsive read. Highly recommended.
My thanks to Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Two women living on shared land. Are both of them hiding secrets? This was the hook I needed for reading Two Widows and I'm so glad I did. Both women have a wonderfully interesting back story that comes alive layer by layer, slowly but surely, with more details revealed along the way. Plus, I loved the idea of Gloria looking out her window to the mysterious woman who now lives on her property as well as another strange new guest who rents the apartment above the garage. Is he hiding something too? A story about friendship, motherhood, marriage, and sisters all wrapped up into one slow burning suspense that reveals the final mystery in the end. A great read!
This is a debut novel for this author and the premise really intrigued me. It was an easy to read story even though it starts out kind of slow. The main character Gloria rents out part of her land to a freelance travel writer. And she is relieved because there are starting to be quite a few murders in her area. And of course, she starts to be suspicious of everyone.
There is quite a bit of repetition about certain past events as the author tells the story, and because of this the outcome was a little more predictable than I like. But it is well wrapped up and I appreciate that a lot.
