I received this book for participating in the Girly Book Club PJ Party, and as someone who isn’t always big on historical fiction titles, this one took me a bit to get to.

She was a new to me author, but in my opinion this one didn’t live up to my expectations, it was just a little bit too slow for me. Lots of heavy topics and family drama, that I would have thought I would connect with, but instead I just felt a little meh about it.

Thank you to Netgalley & Harlequin for getting my copy of this historical fiction to me to read!

This was a beautiful story that provides extrodinary insight into the mind of a woman going through post-partem depression and the treatment of it differs from the 50s to 90s. But it also delivered more than that. It brought forth the challenges women faced in the 50s where society pressured them into cookie cutter roles of domestic housewife and motherhood and they're struggle to break free from it or take power over they're own bodies. Beautifully written, Rimmer produced another story of real life issues and the appreciation of how far our societies have progressed.

3.5 stars!
As Beth and her siblings move their aging father to hospice, Beth takes on the job of cleaning out the house to prepare for its sale. Behind a locked door, she finds a series of letters and painting that unlock secrets of the family's past. Told in alternating perspectives between Beth in the 1990s and her mother and aunt in the late 1950s, the novel touches on several serious topics such as women in the workplace and postpartum depression. All in all a good read, although some of the characters fell a little flat for me.
