I've seen a lot of hype behind Float Plan which is always a scary concept. I always worry it won't live up to the built-up expectations.
It turned out to be everything I wanted and more. Anna finds herself unexpectedly losing her fiance. After mourning, she decides to take the trip they planned together.
I loved this book. It addresses grief. It wasn't just a happily ever after story. The way it discusses mental illness is spot on.
I highly recommend to everyone who loves a romance that isn't just made to live on the Hallmark screen.
I've had this on my Kindle for quite a while and had forgotten exactly what it was about. So when I started reading this book, I wasn't sure if it was a "Lifetime" movie plot or a slasher horror story. Thankfully, it was neither.
A heartbroken Anna is still trying to deal with her fiancee's suicide almost a year earlier when she decides to take the sailing trip through the Caribbean they had been planning together. She takes off in the sailboat alone and encounters several difficulties right away, so she advertises for a crew person. She ends up with Keane, a hunky Irish immigrant who is an experienced sailor but who is having difficulty getting hired since he lost his leg - no one seems to want a disabled crew member. They head out to explore the islands together.
At this point, the book could have drifted into "slasher" territory or into a sappy piece of romantic drivel. YAY! It turned out to be neither. This is a story about grief and loss and how to recover from a tragedy and move on with your life. Admittedly I'm not an experienced sailor, but I have sailed before and the sailing action seems realistic and true to life. The emotions displayed by both Anna and Keane ring true, and (SPOILER) despite the (almost) too happy ending, I found their relationship believable and realistic. Is this a great book? No, but it is a great summer/beach read. Plenty of action, romance, suspense, and drama to keep the reader turning pages. And (thankfully) NO slashers!!
5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. I love love LOVE this book! I didn’t know what I was in the mood to read when I picked this one out but I am so happy I chose this! It is just enough sadness, happiness, love and humor to make it a complete 5 stars all around! The characters, the writing, the story...loved it all. I have to say my favorite was definitely Keane. By mid book I was totally crushing on him! This book NEEDS to be a movie. There are some books that you can vividly picture as a movie playing in your head and this is one of them. I am so happy I read this book! This is my first Trish Doller book but will definitely not be my last. I highly recommend this especially if you’re looking for a good beach read. I honestly did not want this one to end. Loved the beginning, loved the middle and LOVED the end! I predict this one to be in my top 10 favorites of 2021.
I never post spoilers in my reviews but I have to a share my favorite line of the book - “But when he kisses my skin, just there, above my heart, I feel safe” ❤️

I absolutely loved this book! It is the sweetest love story! Anna loses her fiancé to suicide and after months of trying to continue living she takes the trip they were supposed to take together. It is just Anna and her sail boat. Anna sails the Caribbean, meets the most wonderful people and finds out how much she loves herself (and maybe someone else!)!
I am so glad authors are writing more and more about mental health! It is so important.
I loved this book. This story was so fantastic that I purchased a hard copy to share with family and friends!
I was just expecting a cutesy fluff romance to read between deeper books, but I got so much more than that! I adored this book from start to finish. I like how Anna's grief was dealt with through many different stages. I loved Keane's positivity and outlook even after what he had been through. The way they meshed together seemed so natural, not forced at all. I absolutely loved where their travels took them and the descriptions made me feel like I was there.
Two people trying to realign their futures. Anna is grieving the tragic loss of her fiancé. She embarks on a sailing trip that they had planned to take together and finds that sailing alone on the ocean is more difficult and dangerous than she thought it would be.
Keane is a professional sailor hired by Anna to help her sail through the most treacherous part of her trip. He is trying to decide how he will face a much different future than he had planned.
Float Plan is a gripping story of adventure and second chance love. This is the first book that I have read by Ms. Doller, but it won’t be the last.
I received a copy of Float Plan from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for my honest review. I honestly loved this book! All thoughts are my own.
Well written story about finding your strength and learning to rely on others after looking the love of your life. I do not have the courage that the main character had to sail alone by myself.
This one is hard to review. I liked the writing for the most part but the characters didn't do much for me. I tried repeatedly to engage but the story was not for me.
The Float Plan is a cute read. Self discovery book with a side of slow burning romance. I laughed and cried and can’t wait to recommend this great spring/summer read to many people!
I watch a lot of sailing life on you tube and they visit a lot of where the main character visits. It was so fun to read about someone sailing and creating the pictures so vividly in my mind. At first, I thought it was going to be sad, but I adored the adventure that Anna went on to heal herself and prove she can do hard things.
Every once in a while there’s a book around #bookstagram that makes me want to drop everything and read only that. So I picked up Float Plan by @trishdoller immediately, TBR be damned!
It was absolutely worth it. I loved this sad, but beautiful story of Anna, who recently lost her fiancé Ben to suicide. I can’t even imagine what she was going through. She and Ben had planned this sailing trip around the Caribbean Sea and Anna decides rather suddenly that she can do it on her own. She sets out and it’s a rough situation. She meets Keane after he saves her butt (literally) and hires him to be her sailing guide. Keane is a handsome and knowledgeable Irish sailor with just one leg. They have good working relationship and island hop for many days until it becomes something more. Anna definitely mourns for Ben during this time and also for their lives together.
This book is incredible. It’s definitely unexpected and I loved learning all the sailing lingo and picturing the beautiful places they visit and delicious food they eat. I’m a huge Below Deck Sailing fan ⛵️and I know how much work it is to sail, especially for just 2 people. Reading about Anna’s grief and dealing with her rotten and mean mother in law who also just lost her only son was tough, but I’m glad to have been though this journey with her. I’m ready to learn how to sail soon.
Thank you to @smpromance and @netgalley for the review copy. Float Plan is out now!
I loved this story of a strong woman named Anna who makes her way to a better life under adverse circumstances. Her fiance Ben had committed suicide, but they'd planned a trip on a boat that she wanted to fulfill by herself to honor him and what they had together. Of course, losing someone to suicide would make anyone go through the gamut of emotions and perhaps guilt (What did I do wrong? What didn't I do that I could've, etc.?) I was worried for Anna to take a sailboat by herself and go to the Bahamas, but she proved herself to be quite capable. Plus she met Keane along the way and they developed a good relationship quite fast but it was a good, healthy one. I loved learning a lot about various islands in and around the Caribbean and Bahamas.

Anna’s stuck; her life is on hold after her fiancé’s unexpected death. After trying different ways to cope and grieve, she decides to put her current life on pause and start over. She and Ben, her fiancé, had planned to take a sailing trip on a boat Ben had refurbished. Close to the first anniversary of his death, she revisits her sailing training, puts her job on hold, and goes on an adventure by herself. However, within a few days, she recognized that she needed help navigating rough waters.
Along comes Keane, a veteran sailor - with just one leg, so he doesn’t get too many job offers. The two form an alliance, each providing the other something they need, on their way to their final destination. The story arc allows the reader an inside glimpse into each of their lives as they maneuver the ghosts from their pasts, to forge a new path. Be prepared too, to have the tissues ready!!
(I received an advance copy of this book fo Net Galley and have written an objective review)
BOOK REVIEW: Float Plan by Trish Doller
Can you love again after your partner dies?
Ten months and six days after her fiancé commits suicide, Anna “walks out of her life on a Tuesday… two days before Thanksgiving.”
Where is she going? On the sailing adventure that they had planned together…
And yes… Anna meets a handsome Irish sailor along the way, Keane, and teams up with him to support her minimal sailing skills for this challenging adventure.
But this story is much more than a light contemporary romance book.
Anna’s character arc explores a “left behind” partner grieving from an unexpected loss complicated by unresolved plans and the guilt that often accompanies survivors of suicide. And even wondering if she can ever love again… Or will that be a betrayal to her fiancé.
The author, Trish Doller, does a wonderful job in crafting a story with a light yet resonating touch that masterfully walks the line between the grief cycle and beginning a new life on your own.
And the travelogue was simply fascinating in detailing the sailing adventure and the islands visited along the way.
The author quotes Isak Dinesen in preparing us for the story of Float Plan…
"The cure for anything is salt water – sweat, tears, or the sea."
Isak Dinesen
So true… And this story lives up to the cure as well... ✨😎✨

Such an amazing story of love, loss, grief, and finding yourself. Plus a sexy Irishman!
Kudos to the author for touching on the suicide subject, and the aftermath it has in their loved ones.
On a side note, I wish I could sail the sea’s all summer!
A great debut by this author into adult novels. Many topics covered - taking a chance at a second romance, dealing with disability, how to sail, suicide, gaining confidence, and solo traveling. This is a wonderful trip into the islands of the Caribbean and the people one meets there. A good book club selection.
Everything and more that I didn't know I needed to have knowledge about regarding sailboats. Cute story. Would recommend.
Loved this book! Anna’s fiancé committed suicide almost a year ago and she has been stuck ever since. They had planned a trip in his sailboat and that date has arrived. Anna decides she is going anyway. She soon finds out she will need some help. She hires Keane and the forge a friendship while they travel. Anna learns to let go and move on. Of course they fall in love. This was just a great feel good book!
Don't let the cute cover fool you with this rom com! It hits you deep right from the start, but is very heartfelt and endearing and has a major plus of taking you on a journey through the Caribbean! Who doesn't want to escape to the sea after this pandemic?
After the death of Anna's fiancee, she decides to take their sailboat out and follow the journey he had planned for them to take together. Not knowing her way around sailing like she thought, she decides it's best to hire a professional sailor for help. Keane joins her and together they tackle their painful pasts and chart their course for a future neither one of them expected. I loved Anna's fierceness and her willingness to explore the world all on her own and finding out more about herself one island at a time. Sprinkle in a hot sailing partner and what more could you ask for!?
Thank you St Martins Press & NetGalley for the review copy!
I’ve been a huge fan of Trish Doller for years now, so I was stoked to see she has a new adult romance coming out! I jumped at the opportunity to read it and I am so glad that I did! Float Plan starts off so sad, but within the sadness, I also felt hope. I loved how both main characters, Anna and Keane were written. You couldn’t help but love them so much. I think Float Plan has become my new favorite Trish Doller book!
