I did not know that there were so many Grimm Brothers stories. Honestly, my knowledge mostly comes from The Brothers’ Grimm movie – with Heath Ledger (RIP) and Matt Damon. And then some of the more popular stories I know. But this had so many stories you could probably read this to your kids for years and still not reach the end. I even skim read most stories and that was still quite long. I think probably the most famous Grimm stories is Hansel and Gretel, but did you know they also wrote The Frog Prince, Rapunzel, and Cinderella? And most of the stories are… quite dark (which I’m not exactly sure you’d like to tell them to little kids, but I guess some kids’ movies are also violent and can get dark).
All in all, it was an enjoyable read and I’m definitely wanting to read more retellings that have the dark themes in common with the original. Or manage to find other, smaller collections of their tales and reading those. I think every storyteller has something different to contribute. My favourite storyteller is still Hans Christian Anderson because I love the way he tells the story. I now also really like the Brothers Grimm, also because of how they tell the story – very different to Anderson.
Absolutely wonderful! This is a great collection of Grimms Fairy Tales! Although many of these tales are available in hundreds of other books, it's fantastic to see them all collected here.
Very complete collection! I was very familiar with Grimm's fairy tales and some that I had never heard of. The stories are short and easy to read with detailed and transparent illustrations. Looks like something you would find in a second-hand bookstore or attic.
This is a great book. There are timeless stories and this is the case with the story of the Brothers Grimm. I grew up with these stories and have a few tweaks to their stories, and this collection is perfect for fairy tale lovers. The illustrations are perfect, old-fashioned, and also a bit spooky.
This is a beautiful edition, and one to keep forever!
SO happy I got the opportunity to revisit the tales through this edition thanks to Netgalley!
A must read for anyone interested in fairy tales and their history. Plenty of old favourites and some that are lesser known. Great to be able to have them all in one collection.
A comprehensive collection of the Grimm brothers' work with a lot of stories I've never heard of before.
While not all stories in this book are worth 4 stars, overall I feel like the overall book is. I have always loved fairytales, and as an adult there is no exception to this. The Grimm brothers telling of classic fairytales are fantastical, dark, gritty and chock full of lessons. While very different to their Disney and Andersen counterparts, they hold a special place in my heart.
3/5 stars
Thanks a bunch to Netgalley and the publisher for providing this e-arc
The stories and tales were very fun! Unfortunately it took me so long and a ton of time to complete
A beautiful edition of amazing Grimm's Fairy Tales! Brings back a lot of childhood memories. Would be wonderful as a Christmas gift!
The Brothers Grimm have been entertaining this reader for many years. Reading Grimm's Fairy Tales transported me back to a younger age when you could easily lose yourself in these tales for hours at a time. Many of the stories were old favorites, some less familiar and some new to me. I'm now rereading them and then sharing with my family of readers.
I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I’ve always loved the Grimm Fairy Tales, so I jumped on this review copy as soon as I could! They are always just as dark and magical as the first time you read them.
Thank you kindly to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for this review copy.
I am so impressed with this complete collection of fairy tales. I loved reading the macabre origins of such innocent seeming stories.
The edition itself is super neat, with many illustrations, both in color and black and white, which I love. In case anyone thinks the tales aren't magical enough, Arthur Rackham's illustrations add even more mysticism and fantasy to the reading. I would have liked it to include more illustrations at the end, because suddenly it seemed that there was nothing else, though.

This was a nice edition of the Grimm Fairy Tales that everyone should have in their collection. The stories still feel fresh to this day.
This is a beautifully put together collection of the classic Grimm's fairy tales, with gorgeous cover art and illustrations inside. I would happily recommend this edition to anyone looking to add a copy of these stories to their shelves, as it is definitely one of the nicer versions I have seen.
The original Grimm's Brother's fairy tales are quite different from the Perrault collection of many of the same stories, the Green Fairy Book by Andrew Lang, or our favorite, Walt Disney. The Brothers Grimm told stories about good people who were heroes and bad people who were downright evil. The outcome of a particular story rose and fell on the consequences of the actions of the characters. The evil stepsisters in Cinderella, for example, did not go to the wedding of Cinderella and the Prince - no - their eyes were pecked out by crows. The Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White- none of them are as you have seen in Disney movies. I have read the Grimm's versions since I was a child and I personally always preferred them, but I've always been a little dark. I love this collection.

This is a really nice collection of the Grimm's Fairy Tales, and would be perfect for anyone wanting to have a set for themselves! There are a lot of pictures of art connected to the stories, which I liked because it gives the collection some nice breaks, as well as just being really nice in general.
Everyone should have a copy of Grimm’s Fairy Tales. They are in no way politically correct of course, with some of the stories being undeniably anti-Semitic and misogynistic. The children in these stories are the opposite of snowflakes – often suffering from grief, abuse and premature death. Child mortality was very high in those days, and a much higher proportion of women died in childbirth (hence the many step-parent situations!)
Despite all this, Grimm’s tales are a huge part of our cultural heritage in the west. Disney has been mining them for material since day one. They also provide some insight into life in Europe in a time gone by – the life of the peasantry suffering from poverty and abuse while dreaming of a knight in shining armour that would take them away from it all.
These tales also have a fascinating origin story, being rewritten and published countless times over the years. The Grimm brothers claimed to have gathered these stories from the peasantry but many of the stories were actually provided by their friends in the landed gentry. These tales were also used much later as a form of propaganda in Germany, reinforcing nationalist ideas and stoking fears of outsiders.
For a modern, ‘woke’ audience, the outlook is certainly outdated and there has been a huge amount of criticism published on the tales from every possible perspective. This copy features a very good introduction from the University of Pittsburgh’s Professor Lori Campbell which explains some of the background and I would also highly recommend this New Yorker article for those who want to know more: www.newyorker.com/magazine/2012/07/23/once-upon-a-time-3
This copy is beautifully presented with classic illustrations from Arthur Rackham, a master of the Golden Age of Illustration. This book would make a thoughtful gift for any literary nerd, and any child developing their sense of (black) humour!
This was a beautiful collection of the Grimms' fairy tales with a stunning cover and illustrations. I really enjoyed reading through the tales again and I would recommend this to any family or lover of fairy tales!
Really gorgeous illustrations included in this compendium of classic Grimm's tales! Thank you for giving me the chance to get a sneak peek!
