Sex and the Spiritual Life: Reclaiming Integrity, Wholeness, and Intimacy - Catholic Perspectives on Married, Single, Ordained, and Religious Life
This book is a compilation of essays written by Catholics from all walks of life. But the principles apply to anyone who wants to embrace sexual integrity, including married adults, singles, and consecrated men and women. Many of the principles also help readers live more God-honoring lives.
I appreciated the Questions for Reflection at the end of each chapter that prompted readers to go deeper.
Extensive notes at the end of the book provide additional resources and information for research and reading.
Here are some insights that impact me:
“Sexual integrity” means that a person knows the truth about the meaning of sexuality, can abide by that truth, and joyfully acts in accord with that truth.
I don’t push my sexuality down or suppress it. I must take all the passion, the drive, and the desire and channel it in life-giving ways.
Take comfort if you’re struggling a bit, and perhaps ask the Lord, “Are you trying to tap me on the shoulder to get my attention about this deeper issue?”
Sex is the most intimate physical encounter we can have with another human being. When sex becomes depersonalized, we become depersonalized. We are separated from our innermost selves and our most intimate physical experiences.
Progress to an experience of life where we are at peace with our own sexuality and where we see the beauty of God in the sexuality of others— and we are free to relate to others with appropriate affection and friendship.
When facing Monkey Mind or when feeling obsessed with the challenges of chastity - change the mood from self-introspection to some energy-driven activity. Turn off the rotisserie of self-pity in your mind and open your heart to the unconditional love of the Trinity.
When feeling lonely or alone - embrace the silence, seeing in those moments an invitation to be with the Lord, as a beloved son or daughter of the Father, and allow the presence of the Triune God to flood the heart with unconditional love and light.

As someone who is religious, this book was helpful for me. It made me look towards intimacy as not something that has to cause guilt/shame but something that can be spiritually beautiful.

When I requested this book, I didn't realise it was heavily Catholic based. I found the chapters each very interesting, but definitely too heavy for a leisurely read! It's a good resource to have if you're parenting older children or perhaps working on yourself.
