Great book for all ages. The 35 origami projects progress from easy to difficult, and feature unusual items like dinosaurs and dodecahedrons as well as the usual boats and cranes. This would make a great rainy day activity for day campers or homeschoolers, or anyone who wants to expand their paper folding repertoire.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to review a temporary digital ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.
I liked the introduction to each origami piece. The instructions were well laid out. The mobile experience via Kindle could be improved as the only images shown were the finished pieces.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and John Montroll for this advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
I've read several Origami books by John Montroll and he does a good job of illustrating and explaining his directions. This book has 35 animals to make that have various skill levels. It is layed out with thought since you begin with easy and progress to more difficult folding. The color illustrations are great. The timing of this books is perfect for Christmas gifts as well as family fun nights during quarantine. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
All of the projects are very do-able and the diagrams make it so clear and easy to follow. There are some that are easier than others and some that are more on the difficult side for me, but I really appreciate the varying levels of difficulty because there's room to get better. The animals you fold end up so cute and it's a really great book to follow if you're looking for new origami projects!
"Origami Fold-by-Fold" teaches you how to fold 35 original origami models. The author started by explaining the different symbols that show where to fold and which direction to go as well as how to do the most common folds. He started the projects with simple models and worked up to the most complex so that you can learn the skills you need as you go along. He had 10 simple projects, 10 intermediate projects, 8 complex projects, and 7 very complex projects. For each step, he had an illustration as well as the symbols, but minimal to no text.
On the digital version, each step's illustration was rather small and it was sometimes difficult to see the difference between the symbol for folding forward and folding back. I had trouble following the directions even on the first project. I had to carefully study the picture (rather than the symbols) to catch on to what I was supposed to do since the symbols were not clear in one spot. He then had you go back and repeat several steps (starting with the wrong step) but doing it on the other side. If you have trouble flipping/reversing instructions, this could be challenging. If you are familiar with the folding symbols, I think this would be much simpler to follow. However, this may not actually be the best book for a complete beginner (like me) to start with.
This os an excellent book if you love paper folding crafts like origami. What I loved was it was very detailed. Even a novice like me could achieve good results buy following the instructions. I had great fun make the origami craft from the book. It begins with simple fold and end with complex paper folding craft. Definitely recommend it.
Origami Fold-by-Fold is a really cool book with origami for beginners and even some more advanced folders.
All instructions are well explained and, more importantly, illustrated. The book is very colourful and bright and has this happy and calming vibe.
The designs are also cool and a fresh breath of non-flower origami (don't get me wrong, I love me some flower folds). Still. they're really fun to make.
I do have one note - the more complex designs are definitely for bigger and thinner papers - I decided to try some new pack with patterns and colours, and some of the designs just didn't turn out well because the papers couldn't physically bend that way at all.
I recommend the book to anyone that wants to learn some nice designs, no matter if a full newbie or a years-long folder.

Reviewed this book via NetGalley.
I found this book challenging but in a good-way. I practiced the beginning origami animals before I felt comfortable enough to move onto the intermediate ones. The instructions were pretty clear and I liked how the beginning covered all the basic folds. I think it would've been more helpful if there were more pictures of the final product and/or live photos in between a few steps to help make sure I was doing it correctly.
Overall a good book for those enthusiasts who want to learn the art of paper-folding!
I love this book it has oragami projects ranging from simple to complex. I did find the system used for the fold directions to be confusing and I little more indepth information for the folds would be helpful. But otherwise fantastic book.
I would say it's not written for beginners but geared more towards moderate to advanced origami artists. However, I believe even beginners would love looking at the book for inspiration.
