I just couldn’t get into this book. I haven’t been in the mood for a non romance. This is a case of it’s not you, it’s me. Thank you for giving me the chance to read this.
This book!!! All the stars!!! It snuck up on me as a 5 star. After never having read a Sally Hepworth book, I didn’t know what to expect but I am now a fan! This has all of the characteristics of a thriller with a little bit of a love story mixed in. I could not put this down. Fern is my new favorite character ever and I would so enjoy a sequel to this!
The Good Sister is a twisty domestic suspense about sisters. Fern and Rose are fraternal twins with a complicated relationships.
Fern and Rose are in their late twenties. Fern is on the spectrum, and Rose has always been her protector. Fern works at a library and lives a structured life. Rose is married and lives a seemingly perfect life. Rose wants a baby, but she is unable to conceive. Fern decides to help… she will carry a baby for her sister. In this way, she can help the sister who has always helped her. Unfortunately, the sisters had a troubled childhood. As secrets from their past are slowly revealed, things become even more complicated.
The Good Sister is told with alternating points of view, and includes past and present events. Fern’s point of view is in the present, while Rose’s point of view is in the past. Rose’s viewpoint is told using diary entries from their childhood. With the alternating viewpoints, sometimes it’s hard to tell which one is the good sister.
A captivating read for fans of domestic thrillers. The Good Sister combines family drama, mystery, and a little romance.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Alternating between sweet, creepy, romantic, and chill-inducing, fans of suspense will be sure to love this one.
Our heroine, Fern, is an adorably awkward library worker. She keeps to herself, with the exception of reling religiously on her sister, Rose, to help her navigate the stresses of life. She doesn’t particularly care for other people all that much, and loud noises and bright sights can send her into a tailspin. Plus, she’s harboring a terrible secret.
When she meets another awkward soul, whom she affectionately dubs “Wally”, she begins to find new reserves and energy and determination buried within herself. And, too, through her friendship with Wally, she begins to question everything she thought she knew.
A big thank you to Sally Hepworth, St. Martin’s Press, and NetGalley for providing an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for this honest review.

I wanted a little more than the story gave. Hepworth presents a promising premise, but the story left me limp and wanting more.
Sally Hepworth has quickly become known for writing some seriously good thrillers. Her books are what I call "one day" reads. Dont' plan on putting it down once you start reading. THE GOOD SISTER tells the story of two sisters, twins, but not identical in looks or manners. Having survived a difficult childhood, these two sisters have reached the point in their lives where their decisions are hard and far reaching. Ms Hepworth takes us into some dark places where we learn that maybe these sisters are not what them seemed. The story gets more and more intense, you really will not want to set it down at this point. Plan on an all nighter.
The book was as good as all of her books. The characters and plot were well written and there were surprises as always. I love her books and this was not a disappoint, ent. I wrote another review on good reads already so I will not add this there.
Fern and Rose were so interesting and deep. I struggle with unreliable narrators so much of the time and this book kept me so enthralled. I felt like this kept me so off kilter- I never knew where this was going and it kept me very involved because of that. It is hard to review a thriller without giving away the end so I will leave it at that. Thrilling characters and another thrilling story from Sally Hepworth. I enjoyed getting to read an advanced copy of this one.
When I saw Sally Hepworth had an upcoming release for offer on NetGalley I was all over the request button. Then I realized that I had never posted anything about this selection that I had read ELEVEN MONTHS ago. This is why I don’t generally question why I get denied early copies. However, the publishing gods smiled upon me and did indeed grant my wish for an advance of The Younger Wife so I gave this one a quick re-read as a thank you. I’m happy report it was still a 4 Star read the second time around.
The story here is about Rose and Fern. As fraternal twins, the two have always been as thick and thieves and with Fern’s sensory issues after their mother’s drug overdose Rose has always been there to help Fern navigate the waters of adulthood. Now Fern can do Rose a favor. Rose and Owen have always wanted children, but cannot have them. What better way to pay Rose back for all she has done than to be a surrogate?
Partially told through Fern’s eyes and partially told via Rose’s journals The Good Sister is a real genre bender. Part family drama, part chick lit with a little domestic thriller vibe thrown in to spice things up, I could not stop turning pages. And I looooooooved Fern! At a time when it seemed like nearly every author was using a character on the spectrum, Fern’s voice felt fresh and oh so very funny. Hepworth is an auto-request for me and I’m so happy I have her new book waiting in the wings!
ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, NetGalley!
She’s done it again! SH is SO GOOD!
Detailed nuanced characters and a story that had me read this in one sitting. Fern and Rose are twins in their late twenties and Fern is completely reliant on Rose because of her sensory issues and because of something that happened when they were 12.
This is the second book I've read by Sally Hepworth and it's awesome. Family drama mixed with mystery mixed with seriousness of Asperger syndrome. This novel is told from thwo points of view. Great story with a lot of twists and turns. The characters are very well developed.
This is a Psychological Thriller that I have saw so much about it. The first Fern chapter I read I know that the Fern character has Autism, but the book never says that is what she has. I do not want to say to much about the book because it being a thriller I want to not give away anything. The characters are developed very well, and the storyline was great. The twisted where not super big, but they where really good. I loved everything about this book. I am so glad I decided to read this book. If you love psychological thrillers then you should give this book a chance. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (St. Martin's Press) or author (Sally Hepworth) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
“My sister holds the key to my sanity, even though I never gave it to her.” Rose and Fern share a bond that can not be broken. When the past comes back to haunt them, cracks begin to form in their seemingly close relationship. Manipulation, deception and betrayal come to light as truths are revealed and lives are changed forever. When does protecting someone become controlling them? Sally Hepworth expertly crafts this character driven original story that is compelling as well as suspenseful. This is an emotional book that brought me to tears and touched my heart while keeping me in suspense until the final page. Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for my copy. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I have read two books by Hepworth so far and they are quickly becoming a favorite! I love how they read and how I keep guessing what happened until the end. I loved Fern so much in this book. Thank you so much!
This book kept me on my toes!! In typical Sally Hepworth fashion I kept turning the pages until I was finished because I could not put this down!! I definitely switched between sides and my alliances were flexible throughout. At times I felt like I was reading Eleanor Olyphant, and then it switched to a thriller-style plot, and this back and forth was perfectly paced.
I received an advanced copy. All thoughts are my own.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for providing me with the opportunity to read and review this book.
After liking The Mother-In-Law, I was eager to read The Good Sister, which had amazing reviews. I couldn’t agree more: I simply loved this book. Fern is reminiscent of Eleanor Oliphant, and all the characters are interesting without being overdone. The narrating is brilliant, as each sister tells her own story-- what is a truth, anyway, except one person’s version of a story?
I will say, however, that “thriller” or “domestic suspense” is a bit of a misnomer. Most of the book is drama, with some suspenseful parts.
I will happily read anything that Sally Hepworth writes. While this wasn't necessarily a thriller and easy to figure out, Hepworth's writing flows and engages all readers. I adored Fern. One of my favorite book characters and she was perfectly depicted.
A big fan of Sally Hepworth, this one did not disappoint. I was warned this wasn't her best work, but as a new mom, I loved it!
What a twisted tale this was! I would not categorize this as a thriller/suspense/mystery. I would say it’s more on the lines of a domestic drama with just a hint of a mystery. Fern and Rose are fraternal twins and have a lot of secrets between them. When Rose cannot get pregnant, Fern jumps at the chance to pay Rose back for all her help as a child so she volunteers to carry a baby for Rose. The book alternates POV with journal entries as well. The characters were fully fleshed out and stood on their own quite well. The pace moved a little slow for me in the middle but it paid off in the end. The ending gave you the closure and answers you needed for everything. It was twisty, crazy, entertaining and I would definitely recommend it.
Give me all the Sally Hempworth books. I adore her and this book was no different. I loved the story and the twist and turns.
