Oh, I just LOVED the new Sally Hepworth "The Good Sister"! A story of twin sisters, Fern and Rose, which survived a very troubling childhood, with Rose often protecting Fern, and Fern with difficulties reading social cues, and suffering from sensory processing disorder. Now as adults, the sisters are close, and made the best of their lives. As the story uncovers layers of childhood and current ongoings, things are... well, not as they seem. Don't want to give too much away, but this book is incredible and full of surprises. I loved the characters, and just couldn't put it down. Thank you Sally Hepworth, the author, to the publisher and NetGalley for the review copy. All opinions are my own.
Wow, what a seriously well written creepy scary story that has been woven by this wonderful author. This is definitely one of the most disturbing books I’ve read in a long while. There are many twists and turns. Some you will see coming and others, well be warned as you won’t see them coming. Fern and Rose are fraternal twins, each with with very specific issues of their own, profoundly damaged by their sociopathic mother who the outside world believes to be a loving parent until they don’t. Fern is seemingly the gentler kinder of the two, but is she or is she just a really good actress. Then there is Rose, who is suffering her own issues that plague her. Are they a result of her fertility issues, her marriage or something deeper from their shared childhood? So many questions that center on their insane mother, the way they were raised and their deeply held secrets. They’ve spent their lives sticking together and trying to protect each other from their mother, the world, outsiders and the law. I highly recommend this twisted tale.
Sally Hepworth is an auto read and auto buy author! She simply gets better and better with each book! So, while I had this arc (thank you kindly NetGalley and St Martin’s Press!) I HAD to buy the physical book, too!
Sally has become a trusted author that delivers punchy psychology thrillers with engaging characters and plots that are eerily believable! I binged the Good Sister in 24 hours! There is so much to love and much more to love to hate about The Good Sister and it's sibling duo, Rose and Fern. The toxicity and vexatious relationship was palpable. I found myself on a roller coaster of emotions where I was triggered by some of the mental health, grief, loss and trauma pieces yet deeply invested.
Sally added interesting pieces related to sensory processing that was well researched and highly relatable as a parent and clinician. I simply loved Fern and Wally!
The enmeshed relationships paired with unique neuro-divergence and mental health was.....ooof! And while I sussed out the "twist" I found the ending satisfying as evidenced by my big sigh! This is an uputtdownable propulsive novel that I highly recommend!
I loved the reading experience of this book about twin sisters Fern and Rose. The women have a very close relationship, due in part to Fern being on the autism spectrum and Rose functioning as sister and caregiver. The story has elements of women's fiction, mystery, and domestic suspense, and I was here for every page!
Fern is a fabulous character and having insight into her thought process was intriguing. Just when I thought I knew where the plot was going, the author begins dropping tiny hints that my assumptions may be wrong. I won't share more to risk spoiling any plot points.
Thanks to Libro.fm, I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed Barrie Kreinik's narration. Her Australian accent was delightful and kept me anchored to the setting of the story. Thanks also to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the digital review copy.
Yes! Another awesome novel by Sally! This is one of the better domestic suspense novels I've read in awhile! We get to see the story through two different viewpoints, and both flow so perfectly together. It's not overly dramatic and not overly predictable. This is a fun one to stay up late reading. You don't want to miss this!
You know you are going to love a book when you read it in one sitting. My favorite character was Fern. She reminded me of Eleanor Oliphant. I just loved everything about her personality. You could pretty much see where the book was going, earlier on, but Fern definitely makes up for it. Rose I didn’t like her character so much. I wish there would have been a little bit more mystery behind her.
This was amazing! It kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat. I know that sounds cliche, but no for real. It was magnificent!
I really enjoyed getting to know Fern and Rose and Wally, Fern especially, as her personality traits remind me of the beloved Sheldon from the show Big Bang Theory.
I am shelving it under "5 STARS" and "AGAIN AND AGAIN" on my goodreads shelves because I know it's one I'll want to come back to and read again so that I can see if I can find any clues along the way that I missed the first time around! I liked this one so much, that I'm downloading that Likewise app everyone's been advertising about and seeing if I can get any good recs that are like this. I'm not kidding - it was a really fun ride! I
Is this the genre called Mystery? Where the character development is amazing and the twists and turns come outta nowhere? You guys! I found a new favorite genre!! 🤣👏😻
Thanks netgalley for giving me the pdf so that I can share my thoughts and opinions with y'all 🧡
An exceptional book about two sisters, who happened to be twins.
The book really takes off as the sisters lose their mother to a supposed stroke which causes severe damage to her brain and the one sister asserts her will over poor Fern.
Fern appears to be slow thru out the story and depends on her sister greatly.
When Fern becomes pregnant, the tide slowly turns and she begins to see her sister in a different light.
As the plot thickens, things you thought were true in the beginning of the story,do an about face.
This book is amazing and will hold your interest immediately.
A big thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review and to author "Sally Hepworth" for writing such a great intriguing novel.
The Good Sister was a fast-paced and intriguing read. I also loved that it dealt with mental health issues and developmental disorders and it made it a much more interesting book, especially with the dialogue in the book. I always like books where I get to learn something, and I definitely had the opportunity to take something away from this book and went off to research it further which I always appreciate in a good book. You definitely find yourself invested in the story and characters of this book. Highly recommend it for all women’s fiction & domestic thriller lovers out there. A perfect and easy read to read in between those heavy books!
Thank you so much to St. Martin's Press for my ARC of this read!
As many know, twins tend to be pretty close. Usually closer than other siblings. They share a unique bond with each other that only a twin can really understand. At least that is what I have been told (not a twin 😆).
In 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗦𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿, twins Fern and Rose are very close. In fact, Rose is almost more like a parent looking after Fern due to her overwhelming sensory issues. But as the reader continues they will begin to question whether this is truly a healthy relationship. Other characters also begin to question Rose’s motives.
The character development was wonderful and I found myself deeply invested. This made it fun to watch play out. Sally Hepworth is among my favorite authors and I cannot wait to read what is next!
Absolutely brilliant! I love the twists and turns. I love how Fern and Rose felt as real as my next door neighbors! This book had me hooked and never let me go. Sally Hepworth, thank you for this masterpiece.. "The Good Sister" will certainly be on my mind for many months to come.
*Many thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the chance to read and review this title!.*
What a great thriller read this one was! This one kept me intrigued the entire time. This is my first book by Sally Hepworth and I'm on a mission to make sure I read her others!
This story had a lot of great twists and turns. I love thrillers involving wonderful characters and excellent plot twists.
One part page-turning thriller, one part heartwarming tale of the bond between two twin sisters. I enjoyed the back and forth between the perspectives of Rose (the responsible, protective sister) and Fern (the innocent, sweet sister, who misunderstands social cues and has some sensory issues). Even though I was able to guess where the story would go (which is why it gets four stars instead of five), I didn't much mind because the characters were so engaging, and I was never bored with the story. I was a fan of Mother In Law, and enjoyed this book every bit as much. I look forward to reading more Sally Hepworth!
This is a story of twin sisters. Fern and Rose may be twins, but they are polar opposites and have very little in common. It is told in alternating chapters with flashbacks in between. I like this book, but found it pretty predictable.
The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth was an interesting read. Fern is like many of the students I teach and I thought I knew what was going to happen. In a strange way I was partially right, but mostly I was brought on a journey with twists and turns by Sally Hepworth.
Fern and Rose are twins. Fern always seemed to need more help and seemed to struggle to understand people, so Rose helped her always. Fern has a job at the library and loves to read. She has always intuited what Rose needed and helped her, after all Rose kept her secret from long ago. What Fern doesn’t get by understanding people is what Rose gets, until Fern began to have questions.
Be ready to find this novel fascinating. The story has a great plot line and manages to make so much sense until it doesn’t. I enjoyed reading The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth. It was a great read.
Really enjoyed this book. It was a slow build most of the way, which I enjoyed. My only complaint was that the end felt rushed and anticlimactic.
YESSSSSSS
What a great thriller. Everything was dead around me. All there was in the universe was myself, a blankie, and this book while sitting on the couch. LOVE IT
A fun thriller based on sisterhood. While I guessed the ending about half way through i still couldn’t put it down!
I did not see that coming! I am so so so glad I don't have any sisters haha. Woah! You really never know a person even if it's your twin. Fern thought she knew her sister, Rose, inside and out. Little did Fern know that her sister was manipulating her entire life right under her nose. Great story! Great characters! The end made me want to scream with rage (which is a good thing). Highly recommend!!
*Thank you @stmartinspress @netgalley and @librofm for the egalley and audiobook in exchange for an honest review.*
Where do I even begin with this story? I finished this afternoon and was not expecting what happened. The twists and turns were so perfectly placed and executed, it turned the story in another direction and I loved it.
Fraternal twins, Rose and Fern are super close due to their childhood and Fern’s sensory disorder. Fern, a librarian who refuses to help with printer and computer issues but, can point you in the right direction of a great book. Rose, an interior designer who’s married and desperately wanting a child. Fern finds herself wanting to help her sister in any way possible so when she meets “Wally” at the library, she begins to get an idea. However it may seem, the story is beyond roses and hearts and happy feelings because there is a lot of lies and secrets one of these sisters is hiding.
The way the story completely turned a corner was beyond perfection, it made the book come alive and it was then you knew you were in for a ride. I definitely recommend! Thank you to Sally, St Martins Press and NetGalley for the review copy!!
