Manipulation in the theme of this mystery involving sibling rivalry. Nothing is quite what is seems in this tory about twins. Rose is the responsible twin. Fern is the free-spirited twin. Rose has always been Fern’s protector. And as the story follows twist after twist each sister realizes the other one has secrets. If you are already a Sally Hepworth fan, you will enjoy this book. If you haven’t read any of the mysteries by this author, this is a good one with which to start.
3.5 The Good Sister is a somewhat suspenseful family twisty story that has good character development and a smidge of "What is Going On?" Fern and Rose are fraternal twins that are very different and through this dual viewpoint drama we will hear their versions of the past and present. I really enjoyed getting to know Fern and the path she took us on. It was an interesting page turner and a very quick read. Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this advance copy in exchange for my honest opinion. The Good Sister is available on 4/13/21.
I love Sally Hepworth's books, and The Good Sister may be my favorite yet. A really excellent mixture of suspense, romance and humor.
When it comes to audiobooks, I enjoy most any genre, but the timing MUST be right. Recently, my world has been a little crazy, so I knew that light, easy, and fun was the ONLY thing that would work for me right now. Before I even began listening, I knew I could count on @sallyhepworth to deliver exactly what I needed in 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐒𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐑.
The recent twin trend continued in this story of sisters, Fern and Rose. Fern, extremely high functioning, but with some serious sensory issues has always counted on Rose to help her out, set her on the right path and protect her from a world that doesn’t always understand her. As the story evolves, Fern starts to come just a little more into her own, meeting a man not all that different from herself. Rose seems less than happy about this new development and the twists and turns flow from there.
As in almost all domestic thrillers, I found parts of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘚𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳 a bit of a stretch, but it did exactly what I needed it to do. The story kept me interested and engaged throughout. The longer I listened, the more I grew to appreciate Fern and the challenges she faced. Though I’m usually a huge fan of Barrie Kreinik’s narration, in this book I liked her much more when she was voicing Fern than when she did Rose. Perhaps, that was meant to be? I’d say 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘚𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳 is a book worth adding to your summer TBR list. ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
Fern & Rose are fraternal twins, both with issues, one's perspective told through a journal and the other bringing us back and forth present day and a past event at a lake.
I didn't quite love this as much as The Mother-in-Law, but it was tightly told and I appreciated the tension Hepworth created here. It led up perfectly and then the ending felt a bit rushed and convenient given the journey that led us there. I loved the idea of twin sisters and the frustrations and love only siblings can have for one another. I loved the character of Fern- a librarian that refuses to deal with printer issues, and follows a patron into the showers to share a hygiene kit assuming he's homeless only to find out otherwise. I loved this relationship and how earnest Fern was. Rose on the other hand was a completely different story for me.
I greatly appreciated another novel from Hepworth and will continue to pick up more books by this author. She writes a dang good thriller.
Thank you to. NetGalley and the publisher for an opportunity to read The Good Sister
Twin sister - two different versions of the past, and only one is telling the truth.
This book read more like a family drama then a mystery/ thriller but I still quite enjoyed it . At some point, you can totally see where the story is going, but the story telling still keeps you engaged.
This is my first novel by this author, but I will definitely be reading more !

Two sisters. Two different versions of the past. Fern will do anything to make her sister happy, including have a child for her. And Rose will always take care of her sister, even cover up a murder .... but which one is the good sister ? 🤷♀️
✔️ I loved Fern - with all her sensory issues and straight forward talk, I really enjoyed reading about her
✔️ There was a nice love story, generally unexpected in this genre
✖️ at times, this was a bit slow
✖️ the homeless millionaire 🤦🏼♀️
Rose and Fern are twins, but they couldn't be more different. Fern is quirky. She works as a librarian and is greatly valued by her colleagues. However, she suffers from sensory processing issues that makes social situations difficult for her...and unpredictable. Rose has always been the responsible sister. She has always looked out for Fern, even when Fern did something bad in their childhood...and now it is Fern's turn to do something for her sister.
The complicated relationships between the sisters and their dysfunctional childhood bring in the dark and twisty to this novel, but there are surprising flashes of wit and charm too with Fern and Wally. I absolutely loved it, including the unexpected ending.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the arc.
Thanks to NetGalley and St Martin's Press for an ARC of The Good Sister in exchange for my honest opinion.
I was approved to read this book last summer and I have NO idea why it took me so long to start it! This is a quick read - a twist-filled plot that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat intrigued for more! The story follows Fern and Rose, fraternal twin sisters, alternating between Rose's journal entries about their past as they were growing up and their present-day experiences. I definitely recommend this thriller!
This one is such a thrilling page turner! The characters draw the reader in immediately and have you wanting to find the answers to all the burning questions. A quick and easy read with twists you don’t see coming. Fern stole the book for me... I adored the realistic portrayal of her sensory processing disorder and her ultimate redemption story. Wolly is an amazing side character that brings so much to the story! This one isn’t just a thriller.... it’s a family drama with an unreliable narrator, page turning drama, and all the suspense!
This was really good. It was interesting to read both twin's stories. This book has you thinking all the way through wondering what is really going on. Rose is so supportive and helpful to Fern. Fern is high functioning on the autism spectrum. Reading through Fern's point of view was different and interesting as most people don't function the way she does. Fern is stronger than she knows. I am happy she meet Wally, he is a really good match for her. I don't want to give away much but I did really enjoy this book. I was so invested that when I got close to the end I had to stop reading because I didn't want anything bad to happen. I did finish the book the next day because I just needed to know how it ended. I am glad I finished the book. I am leaving this review voluntarily after being sent a free book.
This book is part suspense, part family drama and it ended up being so much more than I expected. After reading The Mother-in-Law last year, I was expecting this to be more family drama focused, and while it was, there was a lot of suspense and twists involved in this book, too. I really loved that this book focused on the relationship between two sisters and how oftentimes it can be tumultuous. The dynamic between Rose and Fern was intriguing and I found myself flying through this book because I couldn't get enough. I liked how they used Rose's journal entries to tell her side of the story, meanwhile Fern's perspective focused on her life as a child and growing up. I really liked that the author shed light onto the life of an adult who is on the autistic spectrum, it felt really natural with this plot line and it was well done in this book. Without giving away too much, this story has a lot of depth and was such a fantastic read. rating: 4.5 out of 5 ⭐️
This could almost count as a romance novel, so readers who like hope in their thrillers will definitely enjoy this one! This is my second Sally Hepworth novel and I liked it for many of the same reasons I enjoyed The Mother-in-Law. They're both mystery/thrillers with a complex emotional story.
This story focuses on the relationship between twin sisters Rose and Fern. We get alternating versions of of their life story, one from the diary Rose keeps and one directly from Fern. There are all sorts of complicated dynamics between them and their mother, lots of secrets and twists throughout the years. It's a unique storyline that kept me interested from start to finish.
The writing is strong and the characters are deep and complex. Ultimately this is a story about learning who we can trust in our lives. Sometimes the people we think are protecting us are self-serving and it takes the perspective of outsiders to tune us in. It's a wonderful emotional roller coaster of a read and I highly recommend it.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review...
Things I liked: The book was well paced and edited. The story hooked me in a way that I didn't want to stop reading. Complicated characters were the story, no big shocking ending- everyone stayed true to themselves.
Things to consider: if you like the author's previous book: Mother in Law, you will like this one too.
Another excellent thriller by Sally Hepworth. I really enjoyed The Mother-in-law, so was delighted when I got a chance to read the Good Sister. The story here focuses on the relationship between two sisters, Rose and Fern. Fern has sensory issues and is a great, quirky, character - the sections from her POV are great. Rose’s POV parts are sections of her diary, where she relates what happened to them while growing up, some of which is quite disturbing. I did expect the twist to come, but it was still really gripping - I got through the book in one sitting! There’s a bit of unreliable narrator, dual timelines, as well as a romance, and the main setting is a library - can’t go wrong with that. Definitely recommend, thanks NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy!
This was my first book by Author Sally Hepworth! I kept seeing this book mentioned in different reader groups and it definitely lived up to the hype. As someone who always longed for the idyllic sister relationship, I thought this was a fun take on sisterhood. While Rose and Fern are twins, they are nothing alike. I especially enjoyed how as the story began I thought I knew where it was going, but as it progressed, my perspective changed. I also adored the point of view from the neurodiverse characters, this added so much to the compelling storyline.
If you like twisty suspense, I think you will enjoy this story and I know I will definitely be reading more by Sally Hepworth. Thank you to the author and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
What attracted me to this book? Well I love dysfunctional family with a twist of thriller. I have read Mother-in-Law by Sally Hepworth and loved it. I was really excited and couldn’t want to read The Good Sister.
Fern was my favorite character. She was quirky, sweet, and innocent. Some people took advantage of her because she is not able to read or sense others' emotions. However, she had many people looking after even when she didn't understand. Her falling in love with Wally was literally everything.
The Good Sister started strong and was a page-turner but predictable. At the beginning, I like that it switch between Fern perspective and Rose journal entries but I found wanted more from Fern than Rose.
Overall, it was a good story and I will read from Hepworth.
Thank you St Martin’s Press, Netgally and libro.fm for a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
I was addicted to this story! I loved how fast this story moved and the alternating POVs.
I loved how we are told this story by a set of twins. Fern is telling present day activities while we are reading Rose’s diary about the past. Fern was an easy character to love and follow along. But as you read you’ll notice something else is going on as well. I don’t want to give away much other than this was a great family drama mixed with mystery.
If you loved her other book The Mother-In-Law then you’ll love her newest book.
"The Rosie Project" meets "Darling Rose Gold" meets "Gone Girl." While the tone is a bit uneven, readers will immediately emphasize with Fern's desire to make sense of the world and to please her twin sister Rose, whom she'd always seen as her protector. I wish Hepworth had given us a more fuller picture of Rose, though.
I love that Sally Hepworth has a neuroatypical main character that is independent, likeable and relatable. Thank you for such a great character in Fern. I really enjoyed the story, liked the writing and was sucked in. Read this one in just two days. I will be recommending this book!
